I installed this same mod on my masterbuilt 560 after the fire box had been burned through on all 4 sides. There is NO fire brick behind the metal in the first generation of these, which is the one I have. It's a fiber insulation that starts getting all over your food, grates, and inside of your grilI. I installed this same stainless steel firebox modification and it has held up perfectly now through many cooks and many high temp sears. I've seen the new ones they have in stores they have fixed the first gen firebox problem by using stainless to reinforce the fire box. Just look in the firebox before you buy it and if it's a stainless firebox, it's a new one.
The LSS firebox mod is 12 ga. 304 stainless steel. A little late for this unit, but Klotes Mods makes a 12 gauge firebox manifold grate that replaces the 14 gauge standard (8:45). It’s a good idea to replace the grate at the same time you add the firebox insert. 12 gauge 304 stainless ought to last many years, or until there is another new latest and greatest grill. Thanks for the video, good job! How is the upper hopper liner holding up? I ask bc Klotes also makes a hopper liner insert as well. I want to add my mods when I buy my grill. By the way, MB has improved several of these issues, but the mods still make it an even better unit. People complain about having to modify it, but at least its affordable and you can decide which upgrades make sense to you. Your grill will be as long lasting as you want it to be based upon what you can afford and how well you clean/maintain it. I see other grill types selling for thousands of dollars and it’s just not in most people’s budget.
How is the 3rd party firebox holding up? I have the same exact issue. 1 month in using the grill daily for a month nothing over 500 degrees, the firebox fell apart.
Hi there, was the insulation material behind the metal plate, baked hard? MB reckon that this is supposed to happen, when the covering plates wear away, the 'firebrick' behind it is supposed to be baked hard. I have had my 560 for a week and will be fitting this mod soon. As much as I love this grill, I can see the hopper column rusting through above where it joins with the firebox in a couple of years. I guess though, spares will be quite cheap and may have numerous other improved clones of these on the market by then...so important to just enjoy I guess as life is short!!
Apparently, according to Masterbuilt, there are fire bricks behind the metal. They say it is designed to burn away the metal covering and the fire bricks remain.
@@mtrunk8570 Can you confirm that there are no fire bricks? Did you actually see fibre insulation rather than bricks? I have a unit on order, so I really want to know. Thanks.
Yes I it is a fiber blanket that is supposed to harden over time with heat. Here is a good article about it. I still like the insert. gravitybible.com/article/firebox-burnout/
When I shut down my 560, the top slider kept hitting something. Turns out it appears to be one of the firebrick but without total disassembly; I can't be sure. I've only used the 560 for less than 50 hours, total and only 2x at 700f. Everything else low and slow! It's a great smoker/grille but as mentioned in this video; there are some components in the firebox which should have been far better engineered.
