I visited Mastercard’s booth at GFF 2024 in Mumbai, where they showcased the future of online payments with their new ‘passkey’ feature!
Passkey allows for consumers to make payments via biometrics and without OTP authentication.
Along with that, Mastercard also showcased how their global network assesses and verifies billions of payments everyday and sorts out fraudulent transactions in real time using AI.

Otp is more secure. We use biometrics atleast 50 times a day, and our muscle memory is trained to quickly use biometrics without verifying anything.

You don’t understand the nuances here… onecard is doing it based on app confirmations… which still has the same flaws as otp. Mastercard is using the passkey authentication, which means the device containing your passkey and the device requesting the authentication should be colocated which drastically reduces the frauds that has been happening recently.

Using biometrics instead of OTP may simplify payments, but it doesn't make transactions more secure. Most frauds occur through social engineering, where users unknowingly share OTPs, and the same could happen with biometrics. While Mastercard’s soundbox feature might work in countries without UPI, it's unlikely to gain traction in India. Retailers here avoid Mastercard and Visa due to high MDR fees and rental costs, opting instead for UPI, which has no MDR fees. Many even disable UPI payments via credit cards to avoid MDR charges.

This wont work on a normal PC (Desktop). Most of the fraud happens revealing information to imposters. So, this mught solve a small number of problem. One of the ways to solve the problem is to introduce a physical NFC key tied to the phone and account that will ensure it works on desktop too.

Registered Device encryption & NFC with passkey already there but never implement or widely used but it's very important to secure transactions & use better secure transactions..

Keeping master card tap and pay next to Paytm QR was lethal 😅😅😂😂 but the point is Paytm is free for the merchant unlike master card
