Mr. Chen is just unbelievable. He makes me want to bust with emotion when he plays There is so much life and raw emotion when he plays, it is so strong that the audience gets swept up and starts to FEEL what he feels through his playing. You are so lucky to have him. You are worth it. Embrace what he is teaching you. You are turning into an artist right in front of our eyes, but grasp on emotionally what he is trying to convey.

It’s so cute you got dressed for Ray. Ray is such a nice guy too. Love the enthusiasm. Dad seems cool as well. Ray is covering a lot of ground here. Cool thing is you can watch the video again and again and then work on each part. DONT worry that Ray has many suggestions, he is only meeting with you because you deserve his time. I love that Ray is always working with kids and sharing his knowledge with these young talented people.

Dear Karolina, This was undoubtedly the most amazing teaching/learning experience I have ever seen. Thank you (and Ray) for sharing. I appreciate that you honored him by dressing nicely and paying close attention. I also sensed the two of you really respected and cared about communicating with each other. Brilliant video. Karolina, you have the technical "chops" to play just about any piece of music...this video proves that. Listen and learn and then feel the music as you play and you will be great. You are still young, but with time and practice practice practice, you will get it.

Ray Chen is absolutely correct. A musician can be technically perfect in the notes they’re playing, but they need to be able to play with emotion as well. That can be the difference between being good and being great.

In a child like way, yes, but now she needs to move beyond the choreographed performances when busking to actually feeling the music, there is a huge difference n one that will come in time as she matures. Ray is giving her some beautiful lessons here, one many artists should learn.

It’s easier to connect emotionally to a song when you can go off the singers tone. But for classical music you only have the notes, and tempo. Practice gets you playing it as written. Connection gets you interpreting the emotions the composer wanted their audience to feel. Learning this will propel her career even further.

I wonder if this lesson came before their street performance of "Schindler's List"? That was a very beautiful performance and one of the very best I've heard her do. If there was ever an individual in the world who would take and use the instructions given here it would be Karolina. He has the same kind of intensity that Karolina has but years of experience to go with it, and....that may be his "loaner" Strad he's using there. That doesn't hurt at all. Imagine what she could do with six months of work with Chen. I think it would help him too. In fact, I think it would help everyone. Maybe Chen would do what Karolina has done and work more with contemporary music. His street performance with Karolina shows what is possible. Astonishing.

Yes play for violinist oneself vs play for the audiences = expressing all your feelings and emotions to the whole hall of audiences. Quite obvious karoline is in her own world, while performance is to include audience in “the world”, enlarge the world, include more and more audiences in the music, that is “expressing”. That was like an emotional ride think of the wheels of a very fast train as it speeds and then slows down then gains momentium as it speeds up and humms like the melode carries on the air as it ebbs and flows with the wind think of I love you I hate you I love you i hate you but its the love of the music or person that your thinking of and makes you want to cry. Sadness and joy all rolled into one emotion .I love you as I do without words. All I have done is take what Ray was teaching and put into words I love you 🌹💕But do not take my word for it show this to Ray and get his opinion. I do not have play an instrament to understand music it comes from within like I love you softly and gently. 🌹💕Tell him I said hi ☘️

This guy is fascinating. I'm not a violinist, I'm more a humble singer and pianist/organist but I can't stop watching this video. Everything he said is right. This is the same thing when you sing, you have to transmit an emotion to your audience, and it goes through the variation of accents and all the things that this man who is certainly above us has told you!

This masterclass was so successful. I am so impressed with both of them. Ray Chen is truly the most expressive violinist in the world. You can feel that here too. Sometimes you can't believe how many nuances can be heard. Karolina plays her pieces on the street with her strength. Here in the classical area she can still learn a lot from Ray. Ray wasn't teaching her to play the violin, but how to bring the music to life though her violin. She is so fortunate to spend time with a true virtuoso who can bring this out. He can see that she can play the notes; but now he is taking her to the next level. I've followed her for a few years, but this is the first time I've commented.

Putting myself in the role of a music critic, just now, Karolina wasn't capable of understanding that level of intensity, here (at this time). She's still quite young. The "angst" that Ray Chen was trying to teach Karolina to express, through her music, is "foreign", to her. (And, why should she already be familiar with it? she has lived a sheltered...but no doubt "supportive"...life, up to this point, in her 15 years on the planet.) An afterthought: I have already listened to her Mendelssohn performance. She "is" a virtuoso, to be sure! Karolina will become a "seasoned veteran" (of this genre) with the passage of time. No doubt. 🎉 Chen is a good teacher: he certainly knows how to "stretch" other performers-- to reach higher. Kudos, to him.

What a wonderful Master Class and what a star pupil, I've played it through a few times and noticed how Karolina responded, getting more and more attentive as the class progressed and she understood what Ray Chen was getting at and responded by being more attentive.... Brilliant !!! I'm an 86 year old musician ( not violin ) and I still learned a lot from this video More please !!!🎻🎻

The way Raychen was giving those all examples to Karolina Protsenko was excellent presentation & especially classically he's fully perfectly Mastered & also i noticed in this video he was giving clear explanation very practically on how to play classical with the emotions & while playing classical music how the emotions comes from sound, after watching this whole complete video Raychens classical playing & explanations with different variety emotions of sound was perfect, Excellent Great Presentation & Excellent explanation, Thanks for sharing the video 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜👍🏻

I was in the viola section for your November Mendelsohn performance. Having experienced playing in Mendelsohn concerto performances many times before, it was a great pleasure to experience this one and to have the opportunity to support your performance. The orchestra and particularly the conductor seemed fully pleased with your performance. While your performance this time already seemed outstanding to us compared to other performances we have played in, I hope you have more opportunities to perform and continue to perfect this concerto in bigger halls and/or with other orchestras.

This is so much more than a masterclass! Understanding the emotion behind the phrase of notes is so beautiful to watch and to hear. Karolina is like a receptive sponge, soaking it all in. I would love to see you both on a stage together, talking to each other via your violins - the conversation would be electricity to everyone’s mind and heart. Very very fortunate to spend time with a violinist and person of Ray Chen’s talent, knowledge, professionalism and prestige is WOW! His insight of how to transfer feelings to sound. How to play and project sound to the audience furthest away from the stage and demonstrate enthusiasm and insight for each note played. What she gained from this is priceless. I’m not a violinist but still gained knowledge from listening to him.

It's interesting to see Ray try to get you to inject emotion into your playing on the classical piece, when your street performances of pop music are always filled with emotion.

You can and hear that Ray Chen not only loves playing the violin, but also lives it. It is really wonderful that Karolina was able to learn from such a great virtuoso of violin music. Ray is so wonderful. Renting an entire place just for a masterclass. And karolina is such a good student. Even though most of the time the teacher is the issue when people struggle in something, the student also plays a key role and In this case there's both, an awesome student with an awesome teacher, the key to success. I hope you had a wonderful performance! (I know you already had it)

Ray Chen, what a nice and generous person, I think he sees all of Karolina's potential and has taken her under his wing. Look at Karolina she’s like a sponge she absorbs everything Ray teaches her. Karolina 15 yo can you imagine what’s ahead for her, sky is not even the limit. Love this behind the scene.
