What makes Barenboim an authority on Beethoven? Well, he was a pupil of Edwin Fischer, who was a pupil of Martin Krause, who was a pupil of Franz Liszt, who was a pupil of Carl Czerny, who was a pupil of Beethoven himself. He is a direct musical descendant of Beethoven!

First time seeing Lang Lang is the student in a master class.

You can see Barenboim face and hear him think, I have nothing to teach this guy, Barenboim was thoroughly enjoying the entire performance of Lang Lang.

German composer, Italian in the music notation, Spanish subtitles, Chinese student, Israeli teacher, both speaking in English, set in America. Damn... 21st century phenomenon

Great teaching, Mr. Barenboim. Lang Lang, however, is indeed gifted. He is clearly a quick learner. Lang Lang is much eager to take in the maestro's advice like a sponge. They interact with the chemistry like father and son. That is kindly warm and heart touching. That is truly lovely.

Barenboim is trying to teach Lang Lang not to be a pianist playing piano. This is a point of view of an orchestral conductor who has an overview of the entire score and now discuss the details. Bravo maestro. 👍

The Lang Lang shows Barenboim really understands how to teach a prodigy. He is basically expanding the dynamic range and emotions for him.

What's wonderful and difficult about Beethoven (at least as far as Barenboim's criticisms of Lang Lang's pulse are concerned) is that while Beethoven is romantic, his backbone is so classical and so rhythmically centered. Barenboim really brings out a nuanced tension and release by having Lang Lang obey structure and slip in and out of it, without losing Lang Lang's personal touch to the piece.

The master is teaching the student, years after the Student is now the Master. The Master for Lang Lang is now a Legend.

Lang Lang is a classical music phenomenon. I think the versatility with which he plays the piano and the way he conducts his career, LL is already a musician forever. He's making his history like the Beatles, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie... Just some of the names I can think of now. There's Ella, unforgettable! All of them, like Lang Lang have an eternal legacy. Generations will come and other musicians will quote him, say his name as an example, frequent environments where they can hear his music. Legacy is more extensive than we imagine, because we don't know where it ends. I don!'t need to make mirabolical elucubations to discuss what Lang Lang means in the lives of people who admire him. He's the man! That's it. Sometimes I ask myself: does Lang Lang belong to the music or does the music belong to Lang Lang? Meanwhile, I go on with Lang Lang drinking from this inexhaustible fountain of wisdom. That's it for today.

This is some Yoda level stuff going on here. When he speaks of the order coming out of the chaos and strife, he is talking about pushing yourself beyond your own limits. To get to the next level you have to go beyond what you already can do and reach for the next rung on the ladder so to speak. Amazing stuff to watch happen in real time.

I think Mr. Barenboim's answer to the first question after Lang Lang had finished was very instructful because it points to his fundamental view and understanding what music is. I think Barenboim, to his credit, sees and understands music much more than a discipline or activity that one does, no matter how seriously, but as something fundamental to living itself.

Lang Lang is excellent without any doubt, but Barenboim's profound wisdom coupled with his lightness and sense of humour place him in a different league for me - no doubt one Lang Lang can aspire to in a few decades from now...

For any serious pianist, this back and forth with Lang Lang and Mr. Barenboim, discussing pianism generally and Beethoven in particular is not to be missed. Both serious and dedicated musicians! A banquet of music ideas and performance ideals!

Daniel Barenboim demonstrated amply his immense pianistic capability here. One of the best, if not the best, masterclass I have ever seen.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Barenboim’s voice before, his voice is so gentle and firm, such a lovely voice combined with a lovely repertoire of his. Probably some of the best pianists ever.

*EDIT* to answer my own question: Barenboim called in Lang Lang as a last minute kinda thing. The latter had to give up catching the world cup live despite having bought a ticket already. Also according to Lang Lang himself, Barenboim had taken him in as him teacher/mentor for many years. Lang Lang even stayed at Barenboim's house occasionally. He said he was terrified of maestro(while having the upmost respect for him), and rightful so. This masterclass took place during that period. ============================================================== What I noticed after going through the whole series of 6 is that Lang Lang is the only student that referred to the sheet music. I'm a little curious as to why. Barenboim is truly an inspiration. One learns so much about life from listening to him talk about music. Highly recommend his BBC documentary "In his own words". Both here and there there exist so many quotable wisdom :D

He reminds me of my teacher. The passion, the expression and the perseverance on details. Seems all piano teachers speak the same language. Wonderful lecture!

I love lang lang, at this point he was already a renowned pianist, yet he’s humble and still has that curiosity in discovering masters like Barenboim’s interpretation on Beethoven’s work.

One thing that stood out to me was the fingering choices for the trill sequence around 30:22 Because he does everything with the right hand he's tempted to stall in the displacement. Now compare to Barenboim's 33:50 where he uses his left hand for the transition notes so each trill is followed by another seamlessly.

I’ve never forgotten what Barenboim once said when he was rehearsing a violin concerto with Maxim Vengerov. He held up the score and said, “This is not the concerto. It contains everything but what is essential to make music”. Simply playing the notes without a sense of what the music is trying to communicate isn’t music making. Barenboim’s performance at the end of this video is masterful. It highlights the gulf in musicianship between the master and the student. It comes as no surprise that very few amongst the myriad of instrumental players ever become masterful musicians.

To get into a composer's head requires deep relationship with the music. That is what Barenboim does very well. Beethovens piano sonatas are all worth of thorough listening. I did it last time when I was in hospital. Lang Lang is one of many rising interpreters of piano music.

whos here after lang lang masterclass video, and someone commented "he is teaching that girl what barenboim taught him 10 years ago" and then u searched for this video.

I think his face expressions and body movements actually prove that he is really feeling the music and the notes he played. He actually did some movements when he played those big legato sounds for example around 11:45-11:54, and those movements really helped him get those sound out. That‘s lot of misicians would do. If someone play piano seat 100% still with absolutely no face expression and act like a zombie, I am sure that the sound would also like "zombie" with no emotions and airs into music. That‘s nothing wrong with Lang Lang and he played this sonata very good actually.

How much love and respect has showing Baremboim to lang lang, this is what a teacher mentor has to be. This class of piano has to be taken by any musician in the world it doesn´t matter which instrument are you playing. This is a unique master class high level expressed for people who wants to be part of the music..... Amazing Barenboim his concepts are truly a treasure. I admire him very much as a guitar player.

Barenboim turning pages for Lang Lang? - surprising ... like a GEICO ad.

Hardly a fan of Lang Lang, I am impressed by his playing of the first movement of the Appassionata here. This was very good piano playing and he prepared meticulously. The numerous nuances impress me more than Maestro Barenboim's supposed improvements. There was a musicality, thoughtfulness and humility that had become less obvious as he became more famous. I love in particular his choice of tempo. The tempo of this movement is tricky; there are twelve beats to the bar and even famous pianists make the mistake of playing too fast and turning twelve beats to four beats in a bar. Here, you can hear all twelve beats. This is an aspect of Beethoven not often mentioned. If you follow his time signature and count every beat, you have got the right tempo, and that's what Lang Lang achieved here so beautifully. However admirable and impressive though, the interpretation was only a work in progress. The pathos, the anger and the metaphysical are dimensions of this work hardly touched on yet. Within the confines of a masterclass, Barenboim was only dealing with the trees; there is a wood and a mountain out there to be explored. Barenboim's Beethoven cycle in Berlin is a testament to this. Paradoxically, the wide-eyed approach adopted by Lang Lang makes easier listening than Barenboim's mature and tortured interpretations. You can love this music to death.

Barenboim keyed right into the flaw in Lang Lang's playing. He ignores the deeper fundamental pulse in the music for the sake of "expression" or surprise. I've listened to a lot of his playing and seen him live and I too had that sense of "where is he going with this?". Each section of a piece is disconnected from the others for it's own sake rather than a continued building up and moving forward. He's a very good pianist with technique to burn but...there's a lot of those kinds of players around.
