See part 8: • Masterclass on Beethov... A series of masterclasses on Beethoven piano sonatas given by great pianist and conductor Maestro Daniel Barenboim.
@dexterityhunter Superficiality ? just because a piece need virtuosity doesnt means that is superficial or a show off thats the beuty of beethoven, i dont argue with the fact that this performance is the best of this masterclass but lang lang's was very good too
I think Jonathan Bliss has the facility to feel the music more so than the previous guy, although there is a lack of that feeling flowing directly through his finger tips though. The old mans advice taken on board will make Jonathan be able to sit in the master chair one day though... I think he genuinely listened and took on board what he said unlike the showoff. BBC4 did themselves proud with this film, my licence fee well spent!!!
@dexterityhunter its a nice thought. But did you hear this whole recital? I have seen Bliss play a few times live and am can say nothing more than competent
Would Ludwig van Beethoven have liked to listen to Maestro Barenboim's "analysis"? I dare to say ... he would have been "flattered" or ... at least pleased ;o)
Jonathan Biss with the final movement of opus 109 certainly is the climax of this masterclass. Never understood this dispute on who is the greatest pianist of all as there are so many different yet fascinating approaches to piano playing. But as far as this class is concerned, I would rather prefer Jonathan Biss' philosophical and communicative playing to Lang Lang's superficiality and showmanship.
