Thank you for this. On a side note I very much like the way your videos are edited so that all the 'ers' and 'ums' and pauses are removed and the information just flows. It makes the substance of what you are saying easy to follow.

Great stuff as always! Questions: How important is recording/mixing at high sample rates? How do you balance your time for business and personal life? What is your normal routine? Can you talk about staying healthy and caring for your hearing? How important is variable impedance with Mics? Thanks!

Good info, bro! I know I'm going to come back to this, providing you leave it up, because I want as much perspective on mastering as possible, and, while it isn't some dark art, as some people would have you believe, it is it's own unique area with it's own unique set of appraisals

David, your content is always so excellent and top shelf. Never even a single moment of BS on this channel. Thank you for that. Here is a question for the series (hopefully you haven’t addressed this elsewhere): How do YOU future-proof your finished sessions? Obviously you have the final print as the finished work as well as saving the sessions, but do you take any other actions like printing stems? (My point being that we all have a lot of plugins and their installation varies on each system through the years, so you might open a session 5 years from now and be missing a crucial plugin that affects the entire vibe of the track). Thanks again.

I would love to see a video about mixing an entire album! I am about to do this and trying to plan ahead as much as possible, but I'm scared of not preparing enough and costing myself a lot of time, would love to hear your approach/guidelines about this
@ViktorNova

Haha I know I know, I don't mean actually mix a whole album on video, more like tips on how to approach it at the beginning stages - like how to set yourself up for getting a consistent sound from song to song and guidelines for reusing track templates, etc, as well as what NOT to do! I'm just guessing at this point and I know everybody has their own flow, but would be stoked to see your take on it if you ever felt like covering this in the future. Can you give a link to Pro Mix Academy??

Great stuff, as always. Here's a question: When you receive music tracks that you've been hired to mix and master, what are the things that most commonly annoy you and/or make your job more difficult that clients do or fail to do?
@NacekO

Awesome video David. Thnk you so much I now at least understand mastering :D I have never left a question for you so here goes. You were talking about limiters. Ho much dB of gain reduction is still safe for a given track (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals etc.) or on the main bus? On which elements do you use a limiter? Cheers from SLovenia.
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE

Question; When tracking or mixing an album or EP, do you like to have everything in a single project file to keep everything consistent? Or have each track/song as an individual project file? Cheers, love the videos!
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE
@AJDOLDCHANNELARCHIVE 4 года назад
@@mixbustv Thanks for the answer! Do you do that for computer performance reasons, or so that you can approach every song from a fresh perspective/make it easier to manage all the automations and mixing moves? Cheers! I tend to try to do everything for a project in a single file, but it starts to take a long time to load up the session and CPU/RAM performance can become an issue. Sounds like I should start doing the template/transferring settings route.

If compare Ozone tools vs Fab Filter... What's better/easier to use? I've found (for myself) that FabFilter's are easier. Although they don't impress you with a "auto-mastering" feature. But their comparing features between instances... I've found that it's a big deal in Pro-Q. Also the "Brickwall" setting in EQ - it's miraculous as I can quickly hear only lows or only highs and etc. on Master. And thus I understand "is my bass gives a mess or not".

Which of the two would you prefer, David - a poorly tuned, poor sounding drumset recorded, salvaged with samples, or a "recording" of an electronic drumkit ...? Given, of course that the performances were killer B-D

I would like to see one of these videos explaining how to master a full album that has many different genres inside it or big different dynamics between tracks, example billie eilish, twenty one pilots or doja cat, these artists make albums with more than 10 songs and one track is an EDM, the other Rock, a Reggae and then Hip hop or Pop. Do you equalize and compress all these different tracks equally to fit the album or treat them individually, export and then bring them back all together to Ozone (for example) just to add the maximizer/limiter?
@mixbustv

Each song will be processed individually and differently

Hey! I’ve recently gotten back a masters from a mastering engineer & the mix was fairly decent. One thing I notice is when ran through the mastering engineer it was this depth in the master that wasn’t in the mix. Almost sounded way deeper and the drops hit so much harder. I’m watching a lot of your videos and love them all but I’m struggle to get one about creating depth in the master. Thanks! If u have a video about that I miss that’ll be more than helpful!

When solo'ing the mid freq range (or the low end or top end) what are some good crossover points to go by? (i.e. is mid 400hz to 5k or something like that?

Also when it comes to the midrange. I'm always a bit scared of touching the midrange at all with exception for very specific frequencies (for example I tend to reduce 200-300hz and 4khz a lot and sometimes I lift 3,5khz or 1,5-2khz up a little) with the other frequencies I'm often afraid of fucking it up, because things will usually sound worse when I try to touch the other frequencies

@@mixbustv Nathan eswine said that Typically, the producer collabs with the artist to decide the final song order. The mastering engineer's main responsibility is usually taking these songs that have been previously mixed and preparing them for distribution (CD, streaming, etc.) Mastering Explained 3 hours ago It's usually the artist and/or producer who decides the song order and the mastering engineer who does the actual editing and sequencing. /Thomas
