Mastering CNC Foam Cutting: From DXF to DAT - Airfoil Design Tutorial

In this video, I explain how to construct a DXF file from an image or a plan. You can then use it to create a DAT file using the new application I've developed. Once you have the DAT file you can use DevWing Foam 2 or one of the free wing generators to produce the g-code for a CNC Foam cutter.
At the end of the video, I show some new microcontrollers I'm working on for CNC Foam cutting. This includes the MKS Tinybee running the ESP32 controller with wifi and the SKR Pico with TMC2209 drivers.
I also show some firmware updates I'm working on to allow the Arduino Mega 2560 with a RAMPS to drive an external MOSFET so a voltage higher than 12 volts can be used for the hot wire

once again a very instructive video, what a lot is possible! it is such a pity that there are only 24 hours in a day, I have already lost a lot of time building foam cutter, needle cutter, 3d printer, cnc milling machine, also learning to use all software programs and watching videos but its still a wonderful hobby. Very interesting video with lots of useful references. Note: the wings on the Ranger 1600mm are the same as on the Phoenix 1600mm (also true of the 2m versions).

A quick and dirty way is to use the DXF file in Jedicut, depending on the number of nodes it may not end up quite as smooth.

Yes, Jedicut does read in DXF. I just can't bring myself to use it. Not the easiest program to use and the one I get most questions about.

It's from here www.panelsystems.co.uk/product/craftfoam-grey I bought a box of 600x600 50mm which was quite expensive but will last me a very long time. The company are local to me so I just collected from them, avoiding any shipping costs

I have bought a fox alien hot wire cutter. Can this be modified to a 5 axis cutter if I could change the controller? How would I modify this please? Thank you

I don't think you can because you need 5 independent axes this looks to only have 3 with XYZ you need XYUVA. I don't have this machine so I can't be 100% sure

I have a question, What does it limit to 2 spline? Iam curious. Friend of mine tried to use your software to cut fuselage

When you create the DXF file you must only use 2 splines one for the top profile of the wing and one for the bottom. The software will error if it sees any more. During the development, I tried more but it created a very jagged profile. 2 splines is the limit in the DXF file.

What is the meaning of 'File not found' in dxf2dat?

You probably are trying to load a dxf file from a folder with a space in the folder name. Move it to a folder with no spaces in the name and it will work. It's explained on the download page.
