Mastering composition to get more keepers is the best thing to do in street photography. If you shoot film, you'll save lots of it. If you shoot digital, you'll save the headache of choosing the best photo of 60 which are identical.

In the video I'm using my Pivothead sunglasses to record the video, a Zoom H1 to record audio. The Leica R4 SLR camera, Summicron 50mm f/2, and Kodak Portra 160.
Note: None of the photos are cropped, which explains the black frame around each image (from the film). Also, none of the pictures are manipulated with cloning out distractions. Just simple processing is done, that's it. Sorry it's shaky. I wanted to use RU-vid stabilization, but it made it worse.
It's said that most professionals get about one keeper per roll. That's a pretty horrible ratio if you ask me, but that's not saying all of my shots are keepers. I know they aren't all good. Heck, you might think they all suck, but that doesn't matter to me. What matters is that I'm always learning, and always pushing myself to get better at street photography by applying composition techniques...not the rule of thirds!
Hopefully this video teaches you that when you learn composition, you can discipline yourself. Practice control and wait for the shot that will be worthy of your collection. Babe Ruth didn't swing at every ball...he waited for the perfect pitch to hit his homeruns. Working the scene is like using a machine gun at target practice. You hope to get a bullseye, but wouldn't you rather be a sniper and nail it?
Check out my site if you want to learn more about composition and photography. Also, if you want to see more, please like or let me know in the comments what you'd like to see. Thank you for the support!!

Often I work around the limitations of only having color film in my camera by shooting it as if it were B&W and converting it later however, working within the realistic limitations of color film is fun and forces you to self-edit even more before you trip the shutter.
@IPOXstudios
@IPOXstudios 8 лет назад
+Brad Maestas I agree, it is lots of fun! I'm a purest in a way, where I never convert my color film…even though it might look better in black and white. It's great that you are working with those limitations. Alex Webb and Bruno Barbey are my inspiration for capturing color.

Great video, I wasn't sure at first but after a few minutes I was hooked and had to watch to the end. Also enjoyed the commentary and explanation of terms flashed up in text. Very helpful to someone like me who is new to photography and street shooting, which I’d never heard of until s few months ago but I’m now addicted to. Thank you for uploading I’ll check out more of your work 👍🏻

Paul Lucas that's great to hear, thanks for the nice comment! I'm happy to hear you are trying out street photography, it's a fun genre! Check out my video for the "photography composition and design" book. It's got a lot of my street photos and teaches useful techniques. Best of luck! :)

Hi Travis, thanks for replying. I’ve been watching and enjoying more of your videos on composition. It’s easy to be led down the path of basic compositional rules as a beginner, and what I’m taking from you so far is the importance of independent thought and the questioning of rules. Picasso springs to mind. All good stuff, keep it up.

I really appreciated this video because it gave me some insight on I should better think through my pictures. Instead of just snapping things that I think are interesting, I should either wait for something to add story to it or give it up. A cool background doesn't make a good picture of there's nothing interesting going on in the foreground

Any chance you could just lay in some of the underlying visual guidelines you used to compose your shots? I understand it'd be too much work for each photo but perhaps some, maybe your favourite out of the lot. Yeah i think that will work better since it will give a better overall view of why you think it works in creating a more dynamic image.

this video/channel is awsome! Thank you for everything you upload! I only have one question: you zone focus, right? My eyes suck so I always need a good amount of time to focus when shooting. In the video you just bring up your camera and *click*. Are you just good at focusing or what am I doing wrong ;)? Also you probably have a focusing scale on your lens?
@IPOXstudios
@IPOXstudios 8 лет назад
Thanks for the nice comment! With Zone focusing and hyperfocal distance there's a math part of it that confuses me. I simplify it for myself and just guesstimate the distance of the subject. Are they 5ft away, 10ft, 20ft? Use your height as a unit of measure. I would recommend this...for me it's easier to understand distance instead of zones...even though, in the end you will have a zone of focus. For example, my typical focal distance is 7ft and I'm always shooting on f/8 or f/11. I used a depth of field app a while back and learned that with my 50mm lens set at f/11 and focal distance of 7ft that my focus would be relatively sharp from 5.5ft-9.5ft. So now I can think to myself " ok, if I set my focal distance to 7ft, but my guy is a little closer, or a little further I'm still good on focus." It gets tougher to get sharp images the closer the subject gets to your lens, but for my subjects which are usually 7ft or further my distance "guestimations" work well for me. Hope that helps!

really useful answer! Thank you so much :)
@BradMaestas
@BradMaestas 8 лет назад
+Tavis Leaf Glover Certainly the depth of field scales engraved on MF lenses are invaluable in quickly determining your effective DOF and hyperfocal distance. These need not be memorized at first but after you spend a week or two shooting in the same kind of light and in this purposeful way you'll find that you will already know what the settings should be and will have them set before you even bring the camera to your eye.
@IPOXstudios
@IPOXstudios 8 лет назад
+Brad Maestas Exactly! Muscle memory through repetition. I'm OCD with my settings, especially my focal distance since I've had quite a few potentially decent shots thrown into the trash because of my focussing errors.

Excellent! Also, while street photography is nowadays as popular as beards and shitty tasting IPA's, yours is one of the very few channels on RU-vid that actually shows good street photography. Most, even the very popular ones, have the typical meaningless shots of a side of a building, homeless guy, old lady or a girlfriend with the "derelict" look going on.
