Wow, your explanation is very clear and calm. The music in the background helps me grasp everything because it keeps me relaxed. A calm mind can learn better. DAING, you explained better in less than 11 minutes than the system of teaching from traditional art school would do. Thank you. Update-2023-9-12: I tried this after putting it off, once I got the hang of it and knew the steps I had so much fun. I felt lighter, like floating on a pool, now I am gonna use it to make more cool art like the sweet looking concept art from Hicham Habchi. It really is a simple process.

Thank you very much for a great lesson! Could you please explain how you fill the mask and make it completely black? I create a layer for the shadow, paint the silhouette, turn on the multiply mode, and click on create mask, but it doesn’t turn on the completely black mask
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 9 месяцев назад
Sure! I do that by filling the mask with black. When black is your foreground color (which is the default btw OR you can just hit D to make your color picker black and white). To fill, just hit option+delete. Super handy shortcut. If that doesn't solve it, please let me know!

I'm glad you liked this. Yes, I think all of this can be done in Procreate. It is just layer blending modes and Procreate has those. I found a good video about this here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OengIie5Mj4.html I hope that is helpful. Good luck!

nice video, except I kind of don't understand why with light source on the back of character, the front boot gets shadow on that exact side instead of opposite side, but that's probably one of those "will look better that way" decisions :) also, your video helped me understand how those layers for shading and highlighting are made... last video I watched (from some other person) didn't explain it, so I dropped the whole concept of it (since I couldn't make it work) and for past 2 years been highlighting and shading manually picking colors and clipping shading layer to color one... and that's triple the number of color related layers Q_Q
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 23 дня назад
Great eye - you're exactly right on both counts. That is technically incorrect since we want light sources to agree, but there are often reasons to cheat a bit to make something look more appealing and I am definitely guilty of that here :) I'm glad the video was helpful and I hope it will save you loads of time in future renderings.

When filling flats do you use anti-alias edges or not. Coming from a comic book colouring style it's still a bit strange to grasp, I keep all the flats on one layer so I have to use really pixel sharp edges in order for the magic wand to pick out each portion easily. But when I try to hide the lines to make it look painterly the hard edges makes it look terrible. Please help me out.
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus Год назад
Hey! Great question. With this comic style/flat/cell-shaded technique I depend on keeping the line art visible to cover those margins. Keeping each clothing material on its own layer gives a lot of control and eliminates the need to make selections with the magic wand. Those selections can end up slightly less than perfect and you end up with weird halos around your color shapes. If you are looking to drop the lines and go for a more painterly style, I usually work from a very dark ground and just add materials as highlights. Check out this character video for a look at that workflow ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a5fPt3VW7SY.html Let me know if that doesn't quite answer your question and we can continue to troubleshoot - I love a good digital painting problem to solve :) Cheers.

Fantastic as usual Hardy. Quick question is there a reason you use layer masks as opposed to clipping masks for your shadows and highlights? Is it a control issue or just preference/habit. Thanks in advance. You’re an excellent teacher!
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 2 года назад
Thanks! Clipping masks could definitely work too. It's mostly just a preference but I guess I do like how much control layer masks give. It seems like there is never just one way to do something with digital painting :)

Hello! Hardy, i got up to a part when we added layer mask, filled it with black, but it does not revealing anything, what could gone wrong?
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus Год назад
Hmm. If you paint on the layer mask with white, it should definitely work. Could you brush be set to some mode other than normal? Or is the brush flow and opacity too low? If you can somehow add white to that layer mask and it's still not revealing anything, then I'm not sure what could be going on.

does anyone know how this style is named?
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 2 года назад
Hmm. I'm not totally sure. I don't think it's far off to call it "comic style" where we have flat colors, visible ink and limited use of shadow and highlight. But, that doesn't seem quite right. "Cell-shaded" may be close too.

@@danielperez2685 Unfortunately this is about all I have on this specific workflow. This video does pretty much cover the whole process (other than the line art). I do have a course called Line Art Master if you're looking for some help with the design and ink steps that were done before the beginning of this video.
@igorivanov678
@igorivanov678 9 месяцев назад
Great workflow, but then the art director decides to change this detail or those costume elements - and you must start anew with the whole line art-coloring-shading process again and again. This workflow looks too time consuming for me and not so flexible for concept design.
@fowlerillus
@fowlerillus 9 месяцев назад
Great point - that can definitely be a problem with really iterative projects. I usually end up with some hybrid version where I use something like this in the beginning but I just add layers with those extras and changes on top.
