Ready to unlock the secrets of German word order?
Welcome to my comprehensive guide on mastering the three key elements of word order in the German language: coordination, inversion, and subordination. In this full 1080p HD video, I've combined three of my most popular uploads to bring you the ultimate resource for understanding and using these crucial concepts fluently! Find everything you need to know about German word order all in one place!
Timestamps:
Part 1 - Coordinating conjunctions: 00:45
Part 2 - Inversion: 04:22
Part 3 - Subordination: 10:55
In part 1 of this lesson, you will learn the 'standard' German word order, as well as the most common connectives in German that don't change word order. This is the perfect lesson for beginners to start linking sentences together.
In part 2, you will learn how connectives and time phrases cause 'inversion' within German word order. This is extremely common and will get you sounding like a native in no time!
In the final part, you will learn how to master subordination and create fluent and complex sentences by sending the verb to the end of the clause.
The connectives covered in this video are:
COORDINATION:
- und (and)
- oder (or)
- aber (but)
- sondern (but rather)
-denn (because)
INVERSION:
- jedoch (however)
- deshalb / deswegen (therefore)
- außerdem (furthermore)
- trotzdem (despite this)
- stattdessen (instead of this)
SUBORDINATION:
- weil (because)
- obwohl (although)
- obgleich (even though)
- da (as / because)
- dass (that... + point to be made)
- ob (whether)
- sodass / damit (so that)
- als ob (as though)
- nachdem (after)
- bevor (before)
- während (while)
- bis (until)
- wenn (when / if)
- als (back when)
Viel Spaß beim Deutschlernen!

This was for me one of the bestest best explanations on RU-vid, this topic has been one of the most kompliziert topics as English doesn't have such things or rather we don't encounter such intricacies in it ❤❤❤ vielen Dank Lehrer

The explanation of the structure was very smooth, fast, and simple to understand. Probably one of the best German tutorials I watched so far. The TeMoLo rule could've been mentioned, aber Vielen Dank!

OH MY GOD THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN SO CONFUSED ABOUT 😭 I'm so happy I found your video, at first I thought all conjunctions booted verbs to the end. Thank you for clarifying this 💜 Another thing I find difficult is Adjektiv Deklination is it possible for you to make an easier summarized version of it? Edit: Nvm I already found ur vid about adjective endings

hello Herr Ferguson! I'm learning German through your RU-vid videos and I was wondering if you had any grammar exercises on the cases and adjective endings and word order? Or maybe can you point me to the direction where I can find any? Thank you so much!
@HerrFerguson

Hallo! Thanks for the comment. I don’t have anything to help with this currently (I’d like to get there eventually!) but in the meantime, the following website is very useful! german.net/exercises/ There’s a menu in the top left to choose which aspect of grammar you’d like to work on and I’m fairly sure it marks it itself! Hope that helps! 🙏🏼

Thank you Sir for the professional explaination. But do you have some more videos introducting the words order of other kind of words in the sentence, exception the Verb, like adjective, time, objective etc ? can we put them randomly or there's some rules
@HerrFerguson
@HerrFerguson Месяц назад
Generally, as long as the verb is in the right place, it makes sense and the emphasis changes. I’m working on a ‘time/manner/place’ video at the moment, so watch this space!

Question inversion is common in many latin languages as they do not start a question with the verb to do. The English way is particular to English.

That means the German is both SVO as well as SOV
@HerrFerguson
@HerrFerguson 5 месяцев назад
Yes, but only SOV after a subordinating conjunction (boot word)
@ArizAkram-wo6cz
@ArizAkram-wo6cz 5 месяцев назад
@@HerrFerguson Thanks for having responded to my comment. By the way, I'm native Urdu speaker and Urdu language(an Indo-Aryan language) is almost exclusively characterized by only SOV word order ignoring the Poems and verb emphasis. Anyway, Do you think that SVO languages are superior to SOV languages in terms of effectiveness of communication or it's just my myth?
@HerrFerguson
@HerrFerguson 5 месяцев назад
@ArizAkram-wo6cz That’s really interesting! To be totally honest, I don’t know enough SOV languages to make a judgement. I’d love to learn Urdu though! Thanks for your support!

No hate , but why didnt you mention the rule TIME MANNER PLACE?
@HerrFerguson
@HerrFerguson 10 месяцев назад
A valid question! I think the main word order rules are covered in the video and TMP is preferable, but I think it was one step too far for this video!
@darklight5316
@darklight5316 10 месяцев назад
@@HerrFerguson of course , but i find a lot of language lerning apps whick mark a sentance wrong if you dont use TMP. So it should be mantioned for people who dont know about it and are confused why it is wrong. Great vid btw.
@HerrFerguson
@HerrFerguson 10 месяцев назад
@darklight5316 That’s a fair point. It definitely comes up in another video, but it makes me think a video with this as a focus could help! I’ll add it to my list 👍🏼

I have a quick question. Wir konnen ein kaninchen in unserem zimmer haben. Why isnt it einem kaninchen isnt that indirect object in the sentance because WIR is the subject?
@HerrFerguson
@HerrFerguson 10 месяцев назад
Indirect object is recipient or beneficiary. We can have a rabbit. We = subject What can we have? A rabbit = direct object = accusative
