Thank you for this video! I want to do mosaic on my padio tables (round umbrella table, an end table & coffee table) on my deck. Being new to mosaic, I wanted to make sure that I used the proper materials.

Thanks for being a fan. Take a look at our lightweight substrate video as well, It may be that you need a proper substrate that then gets attached to the existing table - oh the "Vintage TAbel Top" video will also glean some insights. You go!

I love your videos! There are so many different adhesives out there that it is hard for me to decide which to use. I want to do a bowling ball gazing ball with glass and mirror tiles for outside. I am in North Central Florida and would like to know what you would suggest? Any help is greatly appreciated and please, keep up the great videos!
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics 2 года назад
Bowling balls are not a substrate I favor, they are nonporous therefore no adhesive can penetrate the surface, meaning, eventually (years?) your tiles will fall off. But my mother made a bunch, lived west coast of Florida, and they lasted for 5+ years. I get they are fun! Give it a bath, plug up the holes with something and then silicone is your best bet. Or Apoxie Sculpt, but that may get costly. I don't yet have a video about this, but my preferred method is to cover a polystyrene ball or cheap kid's kick ball with A/R mesh and a couple of coats of thin-set. Thanks for being a fan.

Thank you for this video! I am curious about outdoor applications... you mentioned thinset works well... what if you want to do glass on glass (i.e. suncatcher, etc) where you need transparency? What transparent adhesive would you recommend for such an application? Would like the sun to illuminate the glass and not be opaque. Thank you in advance, this is super helpful!

Great question, and a reminder we need to get a GOG video made! There are a couple of adhesives I like for GOG - MAC is very good and I've had success with it..You can use Weldbond but caution, it may take a long time to fully cure meaning it can be cloudy. Other choices include clear silicone, Lexal and E6000. Thanks for being a fan!

I love your videos. They are so practical and useful. Thanks. One question: I always find Apoxie Sculpt hard to mix together. Perhaps the shelf life has expired. Any ideas. Judy Wheeler
@MakeitMosaics

Great question. It's Bonnie answering. I am pretty sure per Aves Studio, the manufacturer, the shelf life is 3 years - I could be wrong. I have experienced some getting a crust on top and a little hard and put just a few drops of the Apoxie Sculpt Solvent and kneaded in and it got me that softer consistency I was looking for. It is a super cool and helpful adhesive!

Hi 👋 I am so grateful for your video. So let me start by saying thank you! I have been an active mosaic lover for years, always used tile adhesive. All my projects have been in the home. Recently I was asked to do a commercial site. One problem I've consistently experienced with both applications, indoors and outdoors are dropped tiles. This project i have a couple substrate choices i can apply straight to a wall or create boxes. I'll be using small: brain coral, flat stones, sea glass and isolated cut wood. Can you recommend best adhesive?
@kimwozniak5663
@kimwozniak5663 2 года назад
Hi Jenna, We are happy to help. I am not sure what "tile adhesive" you have been using as this could mean many things. There are a lot of factors to consider but the adhesive is probably the culprit in your dropped tiles. In order to adequately answer your question for the project at hand, we need to know where they would be installed. Indoors or out? Size of finished work, with it be grouted, etc.? Does your client want to be able to remove or relocate it in the future? This video show some of the mounting possibilities: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oKaVqfqS3sc.html Our go to adhesive is high quality thinset that you mix. Alternately if you mosiac is for indoors you can use SimpleSet from Custom Building (Available at Home Depot. ) Please feel free to reach out directly at www.WitsEndMosaic.com.

Is there a difference between epoxy putty and epoxy sculpt?
@christopherlyons7613
@christopherlyons7613 Год назад
Thanks for the video. A couple questions. Are there any glues available (other than No Days which I'll talk about in a minute) that have quick cure times but allow some time for tesserae repositioning? I teach classes and am trying to find a glue that will allow for gluing & grouting to be done in a single 3 hr class. I have tried No Days adhesive sheets & mesh and have found them to work pretty well. Have you used No Days products? And if so, what do you think about them? They are an option for use in classes but that's not giving the full normal mosaic construction process and they tend to be a bit expensive. Would rather a quick set glue, if something exists. How about Titebond II (for interior work) or Titebond III (for exterior work)? These don't cure quickly but as a general purpose adhesive I've found them to work well and at a lower price than Weldbond. Appreciate any comments you might have. Thanks.

Apoxie Sculpt is good and cures in a short period, it is a clay-like product, made by Aves Studio and many mosaic suppliers carry it, but costly. In 3 hours you can do a project and not grout, grout is optional. Why not use thin-set mortar, which can be grout-like as well. I use both Apoxie Sculpt and Thinset when doing mixed-media mosaics, look at that video on the channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r8rYgzR3F0k.html. I have taught hundreds of students 3-hour workshops and either used thin-set mortar, and apoxie sculpt OR used Weldbond with intention of grouting, did a grout demonstration during the workshop, and students were given grout to do on their own. I can not speak to no-Days mesh because I don't use it. Good luck!

What tips do you have for the application of the silicone type “glue” that comes in the big tubes?
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics Год назад
Silicone is tricky - when I have those big tubes, I usually squirt a blob on a plastic lid and then use a palette knife to spread on my substrate or back butter the tesserae. For me, trusting that the silicone is EASIEST TO CLEAN UP AFTER IT HAS CURED is the hardest part! If cured, the silicone easily comes off with a straight-edge razor - you can cut it or scrape it. If you try to "wash" or wipe off with a paper towel before it cures, you create a mess to clean up! The video on the channel "Tempered Glass" gives a good demonstration of larger pieces of tesserae meeting silicone. Good question, thanks!

What adhesive would be best for gluing tiny tesserae on a 3D outdoor mosaic? Tried silicone caulk for the eyes and it was very messy!
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics Месяц назад
Depends on what surface is made of. If concrete, then thin-set mortar rated for your climate. If resin or plastic then silicone or Epoxy (messy and drips). For just. For small things, you might try Apoxie Sculpt. It is a 2-part clay, expensive but really a great product. I use for all sorts of things, watch this video, demonstrated ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r8rYgzR3F0k.html

Depends on mosaic materials, Weldbond or Thin-set my choices. Thin-set way durable adhesive, Weldbond super easy. Thinset better for ceramic or broken dishes. Thanks for being a fan, please subscribe!!

Questions about gluing glass on glass; If I am gluing a clear (ish) piece to clear glass, how do I make the adhesive "invisible"? Many times, I can see the dried glue. Is there a way to avoid that? Or, is there a specific glue that's better for this. Also, does Weldbond have a shelf life? I have a bottle that's over 10 years old and I'm wondering if it's still viable. Thanks!!
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics Год назад
Weldbond shelf life, when I google one lave says 1 year, and another sight says 5 years. You are probably pushing it with 10 years. My go-to gog adhesive is MAC Glue, but there is a production problem, and I can not get it these days, If using Weldbond or a PVA glue, I think a generous amount of glue is helpful and then give the piece of glass a good wiggle, to push out any air pockets, clean up the excess promptly. That may help minimize seeing the glue. Understand it may take a very long time for the glue to dry as it is curing from the outside in. I've seen Weldbond still be milky after months. probably now I'll go to silicone, which has its own personality quirks but works well. Good luck!

Is Weldbond best for a mosaic backsplash above a kitchen stove (made of ceramic and porcelain tile pieces)?
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics 6 месяцев назад
No! Weldbond is water soluble, and you will need to clean that backsplash periodically. Thin-set mortar is best, especially since using ceramic and porcelain. Good luck, great project. Email me privately if you have installation concerns contact@maverickmosaics.com

What do you suggest as an adhesive for silver backed mirror to a wood substrate
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics 7 месяцев назад
Mirror Mastic - designed specifically for mirror. I will not eat the silver. Mirrors is clear glass with silver applied to the back. Funny, I am working on a video that addresses this topic. Should be the next one we post. You can get mirror mastic from Home Depot type places where they sell bathroom mirrors or places that sell custom mirrors.

So you have a video for creating switchplates? Does anyone know of one?
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics 10 месяцев назад
We don't have a video for such. I would look for wood bases, that way you can use PVA glue and will. be stronger. If you use plastic try to get a good quality so no flex. And think about your edges, you want to avoid cut hazards. Good luck!

Hi! Can I add mosaic on canvas painting? And what will be the best glue to use on canvas?
@MakeitMosaics
@MakeitMosaics 2 года назад
Canvas in not a good substrate. If you want to add say little touches of glass mosaic, beads or some other bling as a visual enhancement that would be ok, I would use WeldBond - it dries clear and is water soluble. Of course, this would only be for interior display. Good luck - why not give it a try!
