What if I want to mix 6 different oils to make a perfume do I do do it in the same way???

Hi Melanie , love the video , can you provide an insight on how long should I let these macerate before making a judgement ?

You're welcome 😊 glad you love the video 📹 You leave them for 24 hours to begin with and makes notes, then leave for a week and see how it's changed, then leave for another 3 weeks. Some formulas need even longer but you'll get the hang of it after lots of practice!

@@bymelaniejane Thanks a lot for the quick reply , I was trying to experiment with Vanillin and Cedarwood 1% dilutions and trying their combination, so I should start by leaving them for 1 day using this method right to get an estimate?
@bymelaniejane

Yes exactly! I would use those at 10% though... Real vanilla 1% yes 😁

@@bymelaniejaneso It would be 10% using this method to better gauge the scent? As in a real perfume I believe both of them at 10% would be quite strong right?

You don't use the diluted collection in the final perfume it is for experimental purposes only. Maybe you need to take a professional perfumery course!

Can they be reused? Using 10 test tubes for every 2 note accord will quickly add up. I'm starting my perfumery journey and I can't wrap my head around the amount of trial bottles.

It's a lot I know!! Once you train your nose brain though you will have a better idea of ratios and use short cuts etc. This is an old method and rarely used because of the amount of experiments needed but it works in that it gives you an understanding of balance and which oils overpower or work well in harmony together. You can start with 5 and 5, so equal amounts, then decide which oil is overpowering which and add more of the weaker one, so you'll now only need 5. For example; Rose 5 Lavender 5, Rose 6 Lavender 4, Rose 7 Lavender 3, Rose 8 Lavender 2, Rose 9 Lavender 1. You might even stop at the second or third. I hope that helps! I have a training your nose course at The Scent Academy :) thescentacademy.com/course/training-your-nose

@@bymelaniejane I see. I'm thinking about conducting the initial ratios on blotters/cotton pads or something like that. Of course, it can't macerate then. But it would provide an idea for the proportions maybe? Then I could, as you mention with rose and lavender, combine them from that starting point. Thank you so much for your thorough response!

I am extremely new to perfume making so I am trying to learn as much as I can. In this two note accord, are these oils diluted or neat?
@bymelaniejane
@bymelaniejane 4 месяца назад
They are diluted. You should always experiment with diluted oils to save money and materials. It also gives a better impression of the final product if you're planning to make alcohol based perfumes! I hope that helps 🙏 🙂

@@bymelaniejane thank you so much! But how about for oil-based?
@bymelaniejane

The same for oil based... dilute in the oil you intend to use them in, example, jojoba oil or fractionated coconut @@shayevalenzuela8488

Doing the Jean Charles method.... by using DROPS as a measurement?
@bymelaniejane
@bymelaniejane 4 месяца назад
Yes for experimenting only not for creating. It gives you a quick impression of the oils interactions with each other and ratio considerations. If you watched my other videos where I explain that we use weights in perfumery then perhaps you'd not be too quick to judge

Do you recommend glass or plastic test tubes?
@bymelaniejane
@bymelaniejane Год назад
Glass definitely I meant to say, not plastic!!! SORRY! I thought you were referring to pipettes and misread it :) Glass is much better because the plastic and acrylic ones deteriorate, even with diluted oils.
@Joxa514
@Joxa514 Год назад
GLASS. Unless you dont care about the environment and want to be buying and disposing of hundreds of test tubes because plastic absorbs odors. especially strong ones from aroma chemicals.

@@Joxa514 you are absolutely right! I was referring to pipettes not test tubes, I misread the question, sorry! Glass is much better for test tubes as I have witnessed the acrylic melting!

Yes I know that of course. This is just a simple way of experimenting with 2 oils and seeing their interactions. If you watch my other videos I talk about how in perfumery we use only weights 😊 but Thank you for your comment

One the most effective ways to find out how perfume materials interact with each and what ratios to use is the Jean Carles Method. This video is an excerpt from my online perfume course where I show students how to use the simple method. There are other less time-consuming ways but this is an oldie but goodie. It's a great method for beginners who are new to perfumery and are nervous about taking that next step to creating accords. thescentacademy.bymelaniejane.com/courses/natural-perfumery-123
