I've used this technique on a catch box.. Looks great but haven't used the box yet. We used Shou Sugi Ban on a basin counter top and large mirror (the frame obviously) in our bathroom. It looks really stunning...

Very nice. Looking to picking up new boxes this year since the older ones are getting full of holes. I've scorched the inside of boxes for disease prevention but not the outside for wood preservation.

@@BlackMountainHoney I'm in the states and the Langstroth is our standard. I do like the long hive and you have demonstrated the queen rearing potential of those. But I don't have that built yet. Keep those videos coming. I enjoy them very much

Not to be a Negative Nick, but those are going to be sweltering if you live anywhere that gets much sun. Typically hives are painted white/ or left with clear oil/sealant on natural wood to alleviate the fanning bees need to do at the entrance, and half inch lumber doesn't have much R value. I have used shou sugi ban on the INTERIOR of the horizontal langstroth hives (Dr Leo Sharashkin's pattern) with positive results.

I like negative feedback said in a positive, constructive manner 😀 It's a good point. Luckily for us in the UK and especially Wales, it basically rains for 10 months and then if you are lucky you get 2 months of 23c 😀 Be interesting to see the benefit of SSB without the oil and it was very light as that point compared to the oiled finish

I prefer painting with non-drip Cuprinol exterior shed paint which also makes them waterproof and *lot less time being spent*.

It looks amazing, but I'm a bit concerned that it might get too hot in sunny days? It got visibily darker than before the treatment.

You can leave it unoiled but bees are pretty good at ventilating and the UK never gets really hot..Maybe not for the warmer climates though

It looks like only a mm or so gets removed - so I doubt if the strength is affected significantly. Can't say I like the effect at all. Much of Japanese art seems to be of the school "If a little bit is good, ten times as much is even better". I would be much happier with a more traditional very light char to highlight the grain, then seal with the varnish.

I like the black ish finish as you should get great solar gain, which i think is a big plus for my climate in Oxfordshire so even more so up north.

What about the surfaces between the boxes. Moisture tends to stay there longer and is an area where my boxes tend to decay faster, especially at the corners.
