Thanks Rob, a teacher like you was needed, here in Mexico the 6/8 is very common in our music, these analysis of rhythms, hemiola and different possibilities and metric modulations make it much richer and more interesting, gracias maestro!

You might also talk about how the double paradiddle and all of its inversions work great in 6/8. I was so delighted when I discovered that the right hand on the bell of the ride cymbal (or cowbell) is playing the African 6/8 bell part!

Carter Beauford has some wicked 6/8 grooves! I remember playing my drum teacher a Dave Matthews Band song years ago and asking him to show me the groove. "That's just a para-para-diddle, dude!" Got me hooked on turning rudiments into grooves, particularly 6/8. Great lesson, Rob!

Commenting just because I'm early to this one....I go through spells binge watching lessons / technique stuff. After every Beatdown video I come away learning something useful and damn cool, and I do mean every. single. one. RU-vid is chock full of kickass players, but being able to play is different than being able to teach well. You can do both. I'm more of a guitar and bass dude, pretty much an amateur hack on drums, but I LOVE watching your stuff. It's helping me improve, and weird enough it's helped me on other instruments too. Keep up the awesome work.

Rob you are the best. So informative, practical, fun, humorous. As an early stage drummer, there are so many videos out there, it's terribly confusing which video to watch, what to practice, etc. Hands down, enjoying and applying your videos the most. I keep finding them and coming back for more.

To make it easier hearing the 16th notes in 6/8. As he said focus on the quarter note triplet (or count in 3/4 if you will) and just start from your quarter note subdivision in 3/4 and work your way up to 16th note and you’ll be good to go

Hey Rob, how ya doin, that was a cool video.!!!! I am a student at drumeo and i have been with this institution for the past 18 months. I have learnt a lot from them and yourself by watching the videos.!!!! You helped me to play my reggae beats so smoothly.!!!! I do enjoy your videos and very honoured that i am one of your subscribers.!!!! Please if you have time, make a video about how to play in 6/4.!!!! That is my absolute nightmare at the present.!!! May peace be with you. I am out.!!!!

Rob, I need to tell you how much your videos have improved my technique, groove, funk, chops, and most important- my confidence. I just played a gig where we were playing "Good Woman, Good Man," and we were groovin' like there was no more. We LOCKED in. I remember thinking, "Relax llike Rob said, keep the elbows in, maybe a little grimace and hunch the shoulders a little and feel it!" All those little things add up to the big groove. The crowd exploded when we were done. We were told we could play that venue any time we wanted and I got an offer to play in another band on the spot! So, thank you my brother. I watch every single video- even the beginner ones, and I have been jamming since fifth grade- in1968! :)

i never realized how complex this is to break down. i think this explanation would've been too intimidating for me to try. thankfully, i found this groove organically by letting my left foot play the other (count/alternate) note. yes, it feels much better than playing a straight 6. but my favorite time signature may actually be 3/4. moving the snare around in 3/4 gives you a lot of freedom to change the feel

Great lesson Rob! I have always loved the 6/8 groove. Having grown up with tunes like "Reeling In The Years", "The Portrait" and "We Are The Champions" it is one of my favorite time signatures. I really like this idea and I can see how it will help me in my feel. That tip about breaking it down into 16th notes was a great tip.

The first time I ever heard of 6/8 after always playing in 4/4 it threw me off...I legit had to Google what 6/8 was and how it works...basically moving the snare hit on the 4 and the kick on the 1. Once I figured that out 6/8 worship songs were more easier to understand. Useful tricks on how to approach 6/8! Now just gotta get it worked out in my muscle memory and get familiar with it and how it can fit on the grid with 8th notes, 16th notes, quarter notes, ect.
