Mastering The Fundamentals: Bubble Strategy

The bubble in poker is when you are one person away from cashing in a poker tournament. There will be one remaining player who leaves the tournament area with $0 whilst everyone else in the tournament will have made a return on their investment.
The most important thing to remember on the bubble is to avoid going broke! As you get closer to getting in the money or when there will be a payout jump soon, you should avoid taking substantial risks that could bust you.
This will especially be the case when you have a comfortable stack that can easily get in the money with almost no risk. That said, you should not be super tight and blind out. Many middle and short stacks tighten up far too early, ruining their chances of making a deep run. Tighten up more in tournaments that have a flat payout structure.
Jonathan runs you through a simple ICM (Independent Chip Model) to highlight the importance of tight play on the bubble.
You cannot give 'default' charts for preflop bubble play because all stacks in the tournament matter. On the bubble, presume the average is around 25bbs and you have 5bbs.This is absolutely fine if there are 300 players remaining because someone else is likely to go broke before you. This is not ok if there are 9 players remaining and they all have 20bb+!
When you face a bet for all or most of your chips when there are payout implications, you need more than the normal required amount of equity based on the pot odds to call (sometimes much more!) This is because if you call and lose, you are out or nearly out and if you win, you do not double your equity. You should adjust by playing cautiously when you are potentially at risk in a marginal spot. Look to play pots where you can put your opponent at risk. You need to consider risk premium both when betting and calling a bet. You will have a different risk premium against everyone at the table due to the varying stack sizes. If your risk premium is much less than your opponent's you get to apply more pressure.
Some players have not studied ICM very well. Others just 'play for the win'. Some players will just blind out because they really care about moving up the payouts. Your opponent's strategy is vitally important! If your opponent will defend loosely, tighten up. If your opponent will defend tightly, loosen up.

What is YOUR strategy when you approach the bubble? 🧐

Depends on my stack. Last night I used it to push around smaller stacks & busted in 4\80 after I called an angle-shoot (hidden hole cards & a filthy stack) that lost me 300k\750k. My AJ v A9 lost to trip 9s all-in soon after. Didn't learn much except call the TD a hand earlier to clean that b*stard up. I'm feeling ok about my play when the kids complain they never see what I have as I barrel away. "I'm just a disabled veteran who only knows how to play the button & big but gets lucky" didn't wash. 🤣 This stuff works at my $75-150 live mtts. Serious thanks JL.

This gets me pumped for my first tournament in a very very long time. With that being said at 30min blinds starting with 20k 100-200 200 ante. Can’t just sit around and blind out. I will be have to find out quick who I can exploit more and get to work on the table. Thanks Mr. Little for the content.

Antes really buggered up my game at first. Now I just kiss good-bye to my ante & play my big like usual, just with a bigger pot.

I busted the bubble the other day, shoving 14.5bb with QJo from CO with average stack almost 80bb. SB called with KJo and won.

I would like to see a video covering a topic that doesn’t get much coverage in these videos: How to deal with a maniacally aggressive deep stack/chip leader who is also sun running and seemingly busting everyone out of the tournament calling their all ins with literally ANY 2 cards and getting there. As soon as they bust like 3 players in one hand to increase their stack from 7 starting stacks to 10 so they are playing like 300+ BB deep, then 3 more late registration players join the table with 1 starting stack and take turns ripping pre with their 20 or less BB starting stack with hands like AK and AQ suited and pocket jacks and the chip leader keeps calling with like J4 off and 10 7 off and keeps making the nuts over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over to keep stacking people

This story has our anti-hero making too many sick hands by showdown. Maybe tighten up v them, keep your chips behind the line until you are ready to pull a few triggers on the maniac IP. Dunno really!🤣
