I love that almost all the diagnostic techs I follow, all drive 2000's era cars, haha. New enough to drive like any modern car. Old enough to be super simple, reliable and if things do go wrong. Easy and cheap to repair.

Soo what was causing the signal for ignition power to kill or open similarly to a crank sensor? Was it a pinched, or loose ground or compromised ignition power wire? Was it something crazy like a bad key signal?

This is really good information. Thanks! Question, and forgive me if it's a dumb question, I tried doing a long time trace on my Pico 4424 scope using an ES #695 80A current probe.The problem I had was, after some period of time, my current probe turned itself off. How do I make my current probe stay on for long trace captures?
@brandonsteckler3417
@brandonsteckler3417 Год назад
I'm not sure how the current probe you implement functions. there are many out there that will not turn off automatically and they are quite inexpensive. I would seek out on of those.

Enjoy your logic but it doesn't help us backyard mechanics without the tools you use when we only have a 6/ 12 volt probe and a multimeter. Any chance of doing a video using just those two tools and wiring diagrams?

@@jeffcompton6937 well some of us DIY people have vehicle problems. We do the best we can but need advice now and then to help getting our vehicle back on the road. I know that I have a wiring problem or the ECM has given up. I would need to know that I don't have any shorts in the wiring as to not use the new ECM as a fuse when replacing it. I've heard that you need to program the ECM after installation. I'm not sure how to do it and look for videos about the subject. Thanks for your input.

@@peacepoet1947 Hello, and thank you for viewing our tutorial videos. Unfortunately, we will always be governed by the limitation of the tools we have and the information they provide. As much as I'd love to be able to say that this issue displayed can easily be solved with a multimeter, it wouldn't be true. In a "MIN/MAX" setting, it would surely capture the dropout, but you would first have to know what the reason for the stall was, to begin with, and where to test next. Put simply, without being able to "see" the fault portrayed with the tests I have implemented, I would surely be guessing where to test next. This is not very efficient and would likely leave one with unanswered questions. My advice would be to invest in the tooling and the information required to analyze whatever system you are faced with. I know it is easier said than done, however, this is what it takes to tackle challenges like this one. Thanks again for viewing and commenting!

@@brandonsteckler3417 I agree with you that diagnosing a problem where I need to find out if there is a short in the wiring, a bad component or the ECM is bad. First thing I did was check all of the wires. I found stripped wires hidden under the plastic covers that protect the wiring. I put electrical tape around those wires. My transmission needs the pan dropped and I'll try to test each of the four torque converter and shifting sensors on the transmission. The code 42 showed up after I got a code for the transmission sensor when I was replacing ICM I put my hand on some wires that were stripped which possibly shorted out the ECM. I've never inspected anything with the transmission because I never had a problem with the vehicle until she was running rough and wasting lots of gas. Cost me $60 or more to drive 28 miles. I need the vehicle but it probably be less expensive to pay for the right person to do the job if I could find someone who has a shop large enough to get the vehicle in the shop. Thanks for your input but buying a scan tool to diagnose the problem when everything seems to point to the ECM is burned up and there is another problem with the transmission sensor which was the first code I got before doing other work on the engine.

@@peacepoet1947 no ones debating that everyone doesn't have vehicle issues that require repair. But I stand by my stance that alot of DIYs waste more time and money then it would take for a competent tech to actually diagnose the issue. By the time most of you fire the parts cannon unsuccessfully at it, install a bunch of chinese junk parts that just add another unnecessary variable to the process you are fed up and low on funds and then you want sympathy and discounts from the qualified repair centre. Most tech is now beyond 95% of most DIY ability.

Whats your opinion on using snap-on zeus for these scope tests?
@brandonsteckler3417
@brandonsteckler3417 6 месяцев назад
The snap-on scopes are excellent tools. Like any tall, it has its limitations, and as long as you are aware of what they are, you can successfully capture and analyze data to make a diagnostic decision.
