Sorry Andrew, but the card is not a diffuser and it does not soften the light. People often get confused that it is producing soft light, but what it is really doing, is forcing a lower lux value creating a smaller lighting ratio from dark to light. People think it's soft but it is still hard, (just look at the hard edges of the cast shadows). What it does do, is bounce some light forward when bouncing light off of the ceiling. So essentially, you are getting the soft light from bouncing off of the ceiling and a little fill light from the bounce card to help fill in the faces and add a catch-light to the eyes. Soft light is only gained from the relative size of the modifier. The bigger the modifier, the softer the light, period. The wide angle diffuser, which is the clear, patterned panel on the flashgun, is a diffuser. Diffusion is nothing more than scattering light, and that scattering is what makes the light from the flashgun cover a wider range of area. Diffusion can either scatter light in all directions or in wider angles; or scatter on larger diffusion material to make a small light source into a bigger one (like the diffusion panels on a softbox).

Hi Andrew. I have also found the white card useful for outdoor natural light portraits, to give me a better catch light in the subject's eyes. Love your show! I have been a hobby photographer since I was 9 years old (I'm 58 this year). Still I have learned so much from you. Thank you for all you do!

Easiest way to describe how zoom flash works, is with different paper cone examples. Or with your hands spread at different angles =)

Question, I’m on z6 and using aperture priority, I set it underexposed the turn on my flash (Godox 400 pro) and use TTL with eye auto focus, and the shot comes out overexposed. Not sure why. Like every shot is all white. No clue. Doesn’t matter how much I flash exposure compensate. Could it be a menu setting???
