The idea behind intellectual humility is that no matter how much we learn, sometimes we can't fully grasp something as an individual. Therefore, we should be humble and refrain from dogmatism or harsh fighting over differences. The essay I, Pencil by Leonard E. Read describes the extremely complex and complicated situation that leads to the creation of a very simple object, a pencil. We probably encounter pencils everyday in our lives but don't think much of them. That being said, the process behind their creation requires the work and specialized knowledge of millions of people across the world. Perhaps by reflecting upon this diverse and vast system we can grow closer towards intellectual humility. #philosophy #economics #education

It’s honestly quite refreshing to see Read’s work being tackled through a non-libertarian lens. Even though I am favorable to my shared political philosophy with him, the universality and flexibility of his thought as presented in this video is more insightful and useful than the frankly dogmatic manner in which his ideas are typically presented by fellow libertarians. Excellent video!

yes think of all the public resources used by private industry making those pencils - roads and bridges, clean air and water, their educated workforce, a non-monopolistic market, a court system and the like.

❤Thank you so much❤ "I, Pencil" is not just an economic lesson. It's a commentary on the power of human cooperation and the interconnectedness of our world. The marvel of a seemingly simple object and the invisible hand at work - remains a powerful thought experiment.

Read's pencil analogy reminds me a lot of Thích Nhất Hạnh's explanation on the buddist idea of interbeing. This work puts this similar idea into a new perspective of cooperation, which I think is quite sweet. Great video as always!

He may not know how to make a pencil, but one man we hate to love is going to make this pencil disappear...

I googled the process for making erasers and couldn't find any naughty words. Could I get a link to this specific and forbidden knowledge?
