Hey Elliot! Thanks for the shoutout, that. meant a lot!! :) I am also a huge fan of Hausu, Double Indemnity and Sunrise! Especially, Double Indemnity, it instantly turned me into both a Barbara Stanwyck fan but also a fan of the great Billy Wilder! Also, I remember hearing about Harakiri being great, so I'll definitely look into that one. But the movies Punishment Park, Wake in Fright and Bakumatsu Taiyo-Den came directly out of left field, and I can't wait to check those out. In any case, thanks for making this video, and I really do hope you make another one, if that's ok with you. But hope to see more chat come from us soon!
Nice list, I've recently just watched a bunch of these. Harakiri is indeed one that was undeniably great. I love MOC because everything you pull out is just wonderful. I have a question for you Elliot, in fact, make it two. 1. How many are you missing in your MOC collection? I'm currently missing 18! But they are all over number 195 so there still readily available. 2. How many have you watched?
Just finished Bakumatsu.. at fist I was unsure, and the bald caps stood out to me, but what a fantastic film! Thank you for sharing your review. I also watched Dreams, and what a beautiful film. I adore your recommendations and thoughtful reviews, it’s unlocking a new world of film for me, which I was hungry for. We live in a bittersweet time when most films being made are less interesting, but we have access to a plethora of stunning restorations of older movies, and you my friend are like a beacon of light guiding my filmic journey. Arigato!
Great video Elliott. Love Double Indemnity. Killer dialog and so cool to see McMurray play a heel against type. He usually played such squeaky- clean characters.
Hey Elliott, great selection, but I would have loved to have seen the following in the list..... Faust, Die Nibelungen, The White Reindeer, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Da Cabinet des Dr Caligari, The Thief of Bagdad and Der Müde Tod. I would love you to extend this list to a further twenty recommendations please!
Thank you so much for recommending Wake in Fright - I'd never heard of it. I've just ordered it, along with Punishment Park (which I'd already seen and loved) and Seconds (an all-time favourite of mine and my dad's).
Another Top Video Elliot!! Love Harakiri aswell would definitely be up there as my number one masters of cinema along side Lang’s M would love to see a video about your favourite Italian films have only seen a handful some recommendations would be great, anyway keep the great content coming and stay safe
The Arrow 4k remaster is amazing and actually quite cheap. Edit: My Top 10 Billy Wilder movies: 10 One, Two, Three 9 Love in the Afternoon 8 Witness for the Prosecution 7 Double Indemnity 6 Some like it hot 5 Stalag 17 4 The Lost Weekend 3 Sunset Boulevard 2 Avanti 1 The Apartment
Hey Elliot, I've discovered your channel recently and enjoying what you do. Since you're asking for comments, how about making a video of top Curzon AE picks (if you have any, of course)?
Another 10 would be great - I have 6 of the ones in your list on this occasion. I studied Murnau at my University in the early eighties. I love silent cinema and Eureka’s recent 4K of Cabinet ofDr Caligari.
Sorry for the tardy comment Elliot. Just catching up on some of your earlier videos. I agree that Double Indemnity is an excellent noir film. I only have a DVD of it currently. How does the Masters Of Cinema Blu-ray print of Double Indemnity hold up? Also, I want to buy a Blu-ray of Nosferatu (1922), but I can't decide which release would be best. There is a few to choose from at this point. Does the MoC version look and sound good? Thanks again.
Enjoyed your MOC top 10 and hope you will do another. My own MOC collection is not that big - around 20 titles - and includes the Mabuse films, Nosferatu, Computer Chess, M, Touch of Evil, Le Pont du Nord and others. Good to see you selected Seconds as one of your top 10. Superb film. Keep up the great work!
Fantastic video Elliot! Yet another boutiques label that I need to explore and this is such a great list to get started with! I will say that I do own quite a few of them, but these look gorgeous, so double-dipping may have to be the way to go. Haha! Keep up the great work. Btw, Harakiri is so insanely great!!!
Yet another fantastic video mate, well my to watch list just keeps growing lol i do love MoC releases and i think ill add some of these to my collection. House is at the top of that list now i think only heard wacky things about it. Look forward to the next video mate. Be nice to see your favourite boxset in depth. All the best 👍🏻
An absolutely tremendous list and video. Many films that I would consider special. Masters of Cinema was my gateway label to this wonderful hobby of ours and Sunrise was the third film I watched from the label. It was a transformative experience and started a deep love of silent cinema. I’m very excited for the release of the end of the Mabuse trilogy as the others were brilliant. I’ll have to give some serious thought to my own list. Thanks :)
Well I'm not Elliott obviously but I think Faust is a very impressive piece of work - perhaps slightly over the top for my taste, I prefer the more domestic Murneau whereas this seems to me as if the director may have seen a Lang film too many. But I did enjoy it a lot.
Awesome video yet again Elliot, really like how you're delving into the various labels. Cheers for the heads up on Bakumatsu, I hadn't heard of it but I've been getting more and more into Japanese cinema and I'll need to get my hands on it someday, especially after hearing that Spritied Away reference! I also actually recently picked up the same release of Seconds and can't wait to get around to seeing it, I've heard such great things about it. Excellent choices for number 1 and 2 of your list as well, I adore both Hausu and Harakiri. I re-watched Harakiri a month or two ago and I just seem to like it more and more every time I see it, truly a great story and fantastically acted. I still need to get my friends to check out Hausu with me haha, I love it and it's definitely one that would be great to watch with a group. Great stuff mate, look forward to your next video!
Hey mate, thank you so much for the great comment. It's good to hear we share a love for Harakiri and House! I think you'll really like Seconds and Bakumatsu Taiyo-den :) and yes, I'm trying to do videos on some different labels. Let me know if there's any particular videos you want to see from me :)
Value was definitely provided in this video, no doubt...👌🏼💯✔ Your recommendations and input strengthens my ever-growing knowledge on the cinema of yesteryear...👍🏼
Recently introduced a housemate to Hara-kiri, he loved it so much we ended up watching it again a couple of nights later. Enjoyed this video a lot thanks, subscribed!
I’m a big fan of Double Indemnity and just a week ago I watched Harakiri for the first time and it’s now one of my all time favorites. Top 30 or so for me...
Elliot Coen well it’s an ever-changing list, I’ve made a list of all the films I’ve given a 100/100 rating to on my Letterboxd account (AKAJK) the list is called my all time favorites.
Thanks for the recommendations! I actually recently bought and watched Paper Moon. My wife has been asking me to watch it with her for years since it’s one of her favorite movies. So glad I did! It’s truly a great movie. A very easy watch as well. Need to get some more MoC titles for sure.
hi elliot! i would like you to make a video on some of your favourite animated films, hope to see some gems. i will always reccomend sylvain chomets triplets of belleville
Lots of titles in there i need to check out, especially punishment park. Never heard of it before but it sounds great. Thanks for the recommendations. And you even snuck an Aussie film in there. Represent. 😂 Have you seen The Nightingale?
I have not seen The Nightingale but I really want to! I was a big fan of The Babadook when I saw that a few years ago. Thanks for the support as always :)
Definitely going to plump for Seconds (didn't realise this was out over here) and Wake in Fright. I love the sound of Wake in Fright - love Australian films - any more recommendations from Oz? I see Masters of Cinema are releasing the Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith - one of the greatest Australian films ever.
I’d have a look at Arrow for some really good antipodean cinema. There have Navigator, Vigil, The Quiet Earth as well as the excellent and more recent Hounds of Love. I enjoyed all of them a lot. Even better in my opinion are the Roger Donaldson movies Sleeping Dogs and Smash Palace. Quality abounds 😀
@@chrismohan Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Chris. I've loved Prisoner: Cell Block H for years and I think that's where I get my love for Australia and cult tv/cinema with its interesting storylines and warts-and-all approach. I also love suspense/thrillers/realistic horrors if there are any good suggestions in these genres across Criterion/Masters of Cinema/BFI?
I've never seen Jimmie Blacksmith before! Favourite Oz films, hmm. Picnic at Hanging Rock has to be up there. I love The Proposition too. I recently watched My Brilliant Career which was a great, quiet Australian film!
Hey Elliot. Could you do a Giallo video across Arrow, Shameless Films and 88 Films please? I've seen a few of them but it seems that the genre is deep and varied. It'd be great to see all sorts of Giallo recommendations and praise for some of these overlooked classics! Cheers!
Hey Brandon! That's a great idea. I'll work on that soon. I should really watch more documentaries - it isn't my strongest point! Thanks for watching :)
Are Eureka BDs Zoom Enabled or Disabled? I often find my Oppo 95-and especially my Pioneer Elite LX500- BD player's zoom control to be a very useful and fun tool to use-even if only briefly, to highlight aspects of scenes. While about 55% of my BD collection, from distros like Warners, Twilight Time and Kino, have zoom enabled, those like Criterion Collection, Universal, ShoutFactory and Sony have zoom disabled. But I have no Eureka BDs to know about their BD edition of "Flight of the Phoenix". Would you know if this Eureka BD release is zoomable?
Good video. Harakiri is a wonderful, haunting film. Seconds and Punishment park are just so good (Watkins is a great director). Eureka has so many great films that my wallet objects.
I see a lot interesting choices here. It is frustrating that this series is apparently not available in the US and that some titles (Bakamatsu taiyoden) are out of print in the UK. Fortunately some of the others are readily available here, even via Netflix. I was also glad you discovered Paper Moon, one of my person favorites.
Love the love for HOUSE. Gotta check out HARAKIRI asap. Should I watch a samurai movie before I watch it? SEVEN SAMURAI has been on my watchlist for a while...
Thank you :) Yes, you could watch a few samurai movies before Harakiri for context, but I also think it works with no prior knowledge of the samurai code. Seven Samurai is a classic and well worth seeing. It's a long film, but the runtime flies by! Let me know how you get on with the films :)
Great stuff, alot for me to explore as I only own Double Indemnity, which also was my introduction to Billy Wilder in a sense. Before Double Indemnity I had only seen The Private Life of Sherlock Homles (I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan :D ) But Double Indemnity was my gateway to his other films. Maybe you could do a video about Billy Wilder? :D which of his films is your favorite? I can't choose between Witness for the Prosecution or Sunset Boulevard.
Have you seen ‘The Year My Voice Broke’? If you enjoy Australian cinema pre Hollywood influence, very highly recommend it if you can find it. It’s been restored by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in 4K however it’s only out on dvd. I have upscaled that dvd release to 1080p using Topaz. If you’re interested let me know. It’s such a quintessentially Australian coming of age film set in the 60’s and based on the directors childhood. The soundtrack is beautiful, and I think you will really appreciate the film.
I have not seen it but it sounds fascinating ! Thanks for the recommendation. Hopefully it gets a Blu-ray release in the near future if they’ve recently restored it in 4K. Cheers!
@@johnadair4693 I don't understand what you mean by "criterion copy". Of Bakumatsu Taiyo-Den? There's no Criterion release of that. I've only ever seen the hideously expensive OOP Eureka disc.
Interesting selection, I'm still a very new cinephile so I have a long way to go...I've only seen Double Indemnity from that list, but adore it, the mix of Billy Wilder, Raymond Chandler and the author of the book James M Cain, that I knew this was a film for me.
You're amongst good company on this channel! We have lots of great cinephiles who are very accommodating and will always offer recommendations. Let me know if you need any help or advice. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, Still early stages for me, hoping to focus a world cinema but currently this pandemic is making it difficult to concentrate too hard...so going through best picture winners because of a podcast called Best Pick.
Cheers for the recommendations Elliot. I love checking out Arrow releases but MoC somehow often feels a bit daunting and ‘highbrow’ for the likes of me. 😉 The only one I currently own is Kes, but that’s a film that I’ve been a fan of for a long number of years now.
The offering from MoC is different to Arrow Video BUT you shouldn't be put off :) There are lots of accessible movies within the collection. Maybe I should do a video exactly on that! Thanks for watching!
I saw Harakiri just the other day. Miike's remake is also absolutely fantastic and is on Amazon prime. I think my favourite is Witness For The Prosecution
Need to get my hands on Kes. My top 10 would be this (out of the top of my head): 10. The Face of Another (DVD) 9. Paper Moon 8. Laura 7. House 6. The Gospel According to St. Matthew 5. The Lost Weekend 4. Harakiri 3. Funeral Parade of Roses (DVD) 2. The Naked Island 1. Edvard Munch
Bogdanovich's two previous movies before Paper Moon, The Last Picture Show 1971, and What's up Doc 1972, are favs. But I don't know where his head was at when he made Texasville 1990, such a disappointing follow up to, The Last Picture Show.
So many good films in this list! Kes is a great film, but I have to watch with the subtitles on because the accents are really thick for my American ear. lol (Can't mention Kes without mentioning what a jerk the brother is!)...Seconds was definitely before it's time. I always read that it wasn't a success when it came out, and I always wonder why. It's great...Wake in Fright really makes me uneasy. The locals the teacher gets stranded among are nuts. And that scene with the jeep and kangaroos is very unsettling. But all that being said, it's a film I've scene several times because it's so compelling... And Paper Moon is one of my all-time favorites. When I read about it, it always gets me that Tatum O'Neal won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar when I think she has more screen time than her dad! I hate Oscar category fraud where lead actors get nominated in the supporting category so their chances of winning increase. Still a great performance in a great film. Great selections, Elliot!
Hello Elliot fantastic video I have an idea maybe you could do a list of 10 underestimated gems of movies that are not as well known as they should be. I 'll look for your email back and if you like this idea I'll send you a sample of 10 movies I feel they're very underappreciated and perhaps you couldn't talk about yours and the list that I present to you as I'll be very curious to know if you're very familiar or familiar at all if you seen the movies that I list but I'll look for your message back Ciao Fulvio
Lady Frankenstein Nucleus films blu ray Region B looks a great transfer. The dvd looked a horrible transfer. Like Creature from black lake blu ray It has been cleaned up. Bye Stuart.
