Joey isn’t the only one who loves ThunderCats! It would be so cool if CMON had given us rules for the ThunderCats Zombicide minis to be used in this game. They’d blend right in with MotU.
ThunderCats was definitely the better show IMO - especially after the first/second season, with better characters (mostly), more story (not just one-off episodes), and three competing factions (not just two). I bet CMON could convince Mattel to let them create a stand-alone sequel using Thundercats but allowing to mix&match the characters! That'd be rad.
For me, this is the perfect Masters of the Universe game. Note that you can also mix factions. You can have He-Man, Skeletor, and Hordak versus Sorceress, Beast Man, and She-Ra. It's truly an amazing mix-and-match system. I love it! Easily my favourite skirmish game as of now. Also, best player count is 1 vs. 2.
Oh, and the rulebook is definitely subpar (possibly the worst CMON has released for any game). It's not actually badly put together from a design perspective, it's just lacking so many little details... so logic and BGG are where it's at.
This is a great game and sooooo much fan service. Little things like the objective marker being Prince Adam from the famous "what's going on" video and the moral lessons, especially from Skeletor, just show that they cared about the audience.
A system might work well with Transformers. You would need a model for both the robot and vehicle mode. A modular board system would be nice as well to allow for larger maps.
I really wanted this game back when it was announced. Then I realised that it was only available in the US, Canada and Australia and since I live in Europe we wouldn't be able to back it on Kickstarter. We could however back Fields of Eternia by Archon. Fast forward one year later I did receive the Archon game, but decided to sell it. And I had forgotten all about the CMON game. But after watching this review I really want to play (and own) this game. But unless your willing to pay a huge amount of money for the game AND shipping that's likely never gonna happen 😕
After watching Thundercats as a kid. My friends and I took on 2 creatures powers to pretend to be. My name was Che-were. Half cheetah half werewolf. Lol
Wonder if there is a boardgame like that. Taking different animal characteristics to make a character and play. Not just upgrade armor. I think there are animal D&Dish ones, but I was thinking not roleplay. Anybody know?
I'm glad I got this one for its nostalgia factor alone, but there's also a simple, FUN game there! I've played the Rescue scenario twice multiplayer and our team (the non-controller player team) got crushed both times. Maybe we just sucked, but the controller felt overpowered. Still, I had fun losing the game. The AI rules definitely needs some clarity. Spent more time I would like to admit reading through unofficial FAQs and forums. Despite that, the game is still fun solo! Here's hoping CMON releases an official errata document or revised rulebook (and soonish).
My son and I played rescue twice, switching sides and the same thing. Player side got crushed. Fortunately I'm used to that in games like this (Space Hulk, Claustrophobia, etc). Also it doesn't seem to be that way for all the scenarios, just hope that it doesn't put people off being the first in the book.
I actually played both of the Master of the Universe Board games that were just recently released and I much more preferred Fields of Eternia by Archon Stydios. The art and miniatures are even nicer and the gameplay was much more fun
My family and I enjoyed the A.I. mode. We prefer coop vs fighting each other. Can't wait to play again! The game felt like playing with my He-Man toys from when I was a kid!
I’m not too familiar with the IP, but this game has quickly become one of my favorite skirmishers. CMON nailed it with this one and put some heart into it while so many of their other projects lately feel passionless.
The game is fun. We've had no problem with the rule book so far. I don't care about the IP at all and I've enjoyed it. Great components. The dashboards are great for handling the cards and cubes. Sleeved cards fit just fine in them. The models paint up very well. The number of scenarios is a plus. The game mode options are great. Being able to play either as the heroes or the villains is a lot of fun. Beastman can put in work. So far the heroes feel different from each other. Orko, Teela, Man-at-Arms, and He-Man all feel very different from each other, have interesting things they can do, and aren't slotted into a specific turn order. Teela and Orko are S tier.
It took me ENTIRELY too long to realize the video name was a pun, not some esoteric reference to like... the Tower of Eternia or some nonsense. FWIW, Thundercats WOULD be the obvious pick for an expansion for this. The Black Plague expansions indicate that CMON has the license, and they wouldn't have to go through Renegade, who has the licenses for everything else that was listed. I mean, I guess BraveStarr would be an option... I don't think that has the reach a company would want though.
@@thedicetower That's the main thing I think Renegade Game Studios messed up. They made GI Joe and Transformers the co-op games (though Transformers does have a PvP mode), and they made Power Rangers Deck Building Game the PvP game. People want to play as COBRA. They want to play as Decepticons. Nobody (at least nobody I grew up with) wants to be the bad guys in the Power Rangers.
Great Game. I have been making it harder for me. When I exhaust a Townsfolk I haven't been taking both resources. I was just taking the middle resource.
Was huge fan of the show when I was kid, although still very skeptical at the beginning of the review. What pleasant surprise! There is a classic gem of a game here that may just end up influencing other games going forward. I'm shocked! 😅 Now I must go buy it 💯 oh wait, it's $125? 🤮
I was there in the 80's and everyone I knew loved the ThunderCats. It was the next big thing! For a few years at least, then it became an old shoe when the Ninja Turtles arrived on scene. That was the coolest.. until we got the Power Rangers!
Honestly, this would work with so many other IPs and it can be a great mix-n-match collection of games. CMON can easily do boxes around superheroes, GIJoe, Transformers, Thundercats, TMNT and so much more.
Mmm is CMON on of those soulless companies that will try squeeze every dollar out of the handful of good ideas they've published? Yes, yes they are. I'm 100% sure they would if they could. 1 reason it probably won't happen, Hasbro (do their own games) will be thinking they could do better and run a huge project on their own crowdfunding platform that will bomb.
They can't so easily do it when Renegade owns the license for Transformers and GI Joe. IDW owns TMNT, but with their board game division going defunct, they could possibly strike a deal. Not sure about Thundercats
You would think kids don't like this IP, but I promise you if they are exposed they will. My daughter loves it no after seeing the board game and asking about it I purchased the DVDs, my son also likes it but my daughter is all in.
There's also a really cool new 3d show no one talks about, but your kids might love that. I watched a few episodes for nostalgia's sake once and it was pretty good.
Another Thundercats fan here. Though I liked He-Man and G.I. Joe as well. I was really more of a Real Ghostbusters fan though. Sad that most board games with that IP is kinda mediocre at best.
Cant wait to put my hand in this game. Also wish they made it a version playable on VR!! How cool would that be? With animated cards, boards and miniatures?
Doesn't help. As a huge MOTU fan, I had to walk away from this for the sheer size and afraid it was going to be over complicated. You guys are tempting me now.
I don’t have my copy because I live in a Twilight Zone where I’m in the last 10% of delivery for EVERY Kickstarter ever. That said, the rule book is very sad. Not nearly the worst, but definitely in need of a FAQ. THEN this game could be a 9-10.
Hey have you tryout also "Fields of eternia" ? I have just received it, so weird they did 2 games at the same time so similar, what are the differences ? I haven't got the time to open mine yet.
Joey is right, BTW. Thundercats had better writing, better world-building, and holds up much better over time. Thundercats did NOT have an important life lesson at the end of each episode, though.
My wallet thanks me that this game wasnt backable in the EU. I WANT it. But I would probably almost never play it. But there would have been a real risk I still would have gone all in :)
It’s not only that the AI rules look like they are half baked, but it’s extremely too difficult. Having a card like ambush for the AI KOd three of my players and ended the very first mission not even 20 minutes into the game. Some of these strategy cards for the AI will be house ruled and nerfed to actually play the game and enjoy it for our house.
Thundercats was way better back in days! I really wanna see a thundercats board game more of an open world kinda like Fallout or Skyrim. Masters of the universe gameplay didn't really hooked me...PASS
For what it was the price point was too much. I picked up Massive Darkness 2 and will continue to happily play that instead. It is cool however that fans of masters of the universe finally get to play a great game with their favorite childhood heroes.
Do you mean for the KS bundles or the game itself? There's a lot of game in the box for the price point. My metric this year is to compare all big box games to D&D Onslaught and so far everything's beaten it :D
Meh honestly just looks like so many other of these one vs many style games with the he-man IP and they all just feel about the same. Take actions moving around the board, rolling piles of dice attacking and spending energy to use abilities. Maybe if I was more invested in the IP but even then I already have a million of these same type of games
I hope one day we have the technology to apply a liquid available in different colors to various items. Maybe it will dry. Maybe it can be layered to visually appealing effect. We can only hope. Seriously, though, it looks real nice painted up. Most other games with minis are unpainted. Prepaints are usually bad quality. Not sure why there's a complaint.
