I don't think I've seen Brann nervous before. Until he started talking about his first live broadcast tv performance. Like it all came back to him haha

Great interview! Mastodon blew me away the first time I saw them, particularly with Brann's drumming. Truly memorising to watch.

Why wasn't Opeth included in this episode of Metal Evolution? One of the most important prog metal bands the last 20 years and by 2010 they were pretty huge!

Brann is a god, period. End of discussion. Not because his skill, but because of his humility. He went through unimaginable pains in his youth. Being mistreated, followed by the suicide of his only solace, his sister. But look at him, positive, excited, energetic and flowing. Its really impressive and I admire it. Hopefully we all do.

The thing about Brann is when asked what the climate was like when Mastodon formed in 1999, he said: "As far as metal was concerned, I think it was still kind of a bad word. Like, grunge was still sort of popular, but it had been completely watered-down and was suffering from the same thing that hair metal was suffering from in the late '80s". One thing was that nu-metal was huge in 1999 with bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Coal Chamber, etc. Heck, 1999 was the year of the disastrous Woodstock '99 festival. An entire episode even focused on that genre.
@wes1hoskins
@wes1hoskins 4 года назад
But you could make the argument that those bands weren't necessarily metal. The biggest band that was without a doubt metal was Pantera and even Metallica was more of a hard rock band. Besides that the traditional metal headliners were less popular and playing smaller venues at the time. All of the interesting things happening in Metal at the time were in the underground i.e. Mastodon, Today is the Day, Lamb of God, Dillinger, Converge and Meshuggah
