The entire Emperor of Sand album is great. Concept album about dying of Cancer and dealing with loss all the way through. This and Steambreather are my favorite two tracks on the album.
Steam breather :) and hearts alive. And deathbound.. And ol'nessie.. And crystal skull.. And the wolf is loose, and colony of birch men, and blood and thunder, and seabeaast
I couldn't get past Roots Remain in terms of favourites on the album... It really spoke to me while my uncle was passing away from cancer. While I won't say it was a comfort to know others go through similar experiences I will say it gave me a sense of solidarity while feeling very much alone. Cancer doesn't allow comfort for anyone involved.
No, if you want to hear him in top gear, In the eyes of god album by today is the day. First two tracks, in the eyes of god, and going to hell. My first reaction to remission was 'he's calmed down!' that whole album is ridiculously violent. Brann and the other guitarist playing bass instead (not troy) cos steve austin likes a different band every album.
One of the best things about Mastodon is that they have 3 vocalists: Brent (one of the guitarists), Troy (bassist) and Brann (drummer). Hope you listen to more by them. There's more psychedelic stuff like Asleep in the Deep, heavier stuff like Blood and Thunder and proggier stuff like The Last Baron.
Totally agree! That name alone is what intrigued me to listen to them for the first time. Honestly, is there a cooler name for a band?? Chumbawumba and Hoobastank don't count!! lol
My favorite band. Crack The Skye is their masterpiece. Songs like The Czar or The Last Baron are out of this world. Like a huge portal to the best music from the 70s and 80s. Progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal together. Jaguar God and their last album Emperor of Sand is amazing too. PS. Brann Dailor is phenomenal as a drummer.
They have multiple masterpieces, crack the skye while receiving amazing reviews from music critics wasn’t even their best received album. One of the best metal bands of the last 2 decades
Shit is such a shame, they deserve so many more reactions. Best metal band of the last 2 decades, their discography is pretty much unmatched in that time frame.
Back in 2002, I asked Mastodon's bassist/vocalist Troy why they named the band Mastodon. Without hesitation, he said during the Ice Age, the mastodon trampled everything in it's path, and was the hardest mammal to take down.
ha! "a proper band" you wont get a better compliment from an Englishman. I am from Atlanta, these are my dudes. I love your reaction to them. Makes me smile inside. I highly recommend getting a copy of the album "crack the Skye". play it clean through, no interruptions.
Nice to see you getting into it. Jaguar God is an excellent introduction to Mastodon's sound, a combination of classic prog and metal (and Thin Lizzy and Frank Zappa and much else besides), composed with care and played with skill. Since you enjoy the transitions, I'm going to agree with everyone who suggests The Czar (which is kind of like how The Gates of Delirium by Yes might have sounded if Yes were a metal band from Atlanta, Georgia).
oh wow didnt expect this. mastodon is my all time favourite group. i'd recommend checking out The Last Baron, or, since youre on board with harsh vocals Hearts Alive. both absolute masterpieces edit: having seen the end, Emperor of Sand is their most recent LP and i'd argue one of their best.
Mastodon are on my top five favourites bands. I love every one of their songs. Blood Mountain is my favorite album. They write music in a very special way, and they sound like no other band. They are one of these diverse bands that you have to listen to many of their songs, to understand what they are about. They also don't take themselves too seriously. They have a song called Octopus Has No Friends for crying out loud! And they have another song called Creature Lives that is about a poor lonely monster that wants friends but everyone is bullying him so he returns where he came from. The strangest thing I've ever listened but so beautiful. You can't go wrong with them.
That was my introduction to this band and I really liked it. I've heard the name many times but never actually listened to their music. Another band to look into :) Thanks for the video Jim!
I realized I requested Last Baron and you have already reviewed it! May I suggest The Ghost of Karelia ! BUT watch the version where bran plays the drums along with it, in his studio. Insane. He is unmatched.
Your experience was very much like mine. I knew of the band for a long time and just assumed for some reason (maybe the name) that they were a death metal type band. Right around the time Emperor of Sand came out, Jaguar God played one day while listening to Pandora. By the time the outro solo ended, I had goosebumps. I quickly learned that Brent Hinds has a knack for goosebump inducing guitar work (vocals as well) and was kicking myself for never listening to them before. One of my favorite bands now.
I think it's fair to say, that Mastodon is an awesome band! Seen them live once (Tuska Festival 2017, Helsinki). They make you sway along with your fist raised up. I fell in love with Mastodon by their album Crack the Sky, which I recommend for you, Jim, most warmly.
Saw these amazing guys live yesterday, they are just as good live as they are on record imo. Bonus points for keeping chatting until after they have played all of their songs. 10/10
Having grown up in southern Calif in the 50s,60s listening to a lot of music, Mastodon is right up there with the best of the best in today's progressive rock, metal scene.
Absolutely love Dry Bone Valley - and given that Brann the drummer is also singing most of the way through... amazing (Yes I've seen them do it live, so can confirm that he doesn't need to breathe).
Awesome Jim pretty cool shout out, Cheers!! Glad you've gone n Masto.. Done it now. The hunter album is off planet. Check out the song Creature Lives. All the best
Cool! Mastodon is my favorite band along with Tool, I actually saw them live monday 🙂 You should check out Hearts Alive, Diamond in the witch House, Last Baron, The Czar and Colony of Birchmen by Mastodon next 😉
Fun fact for you: "The Walking Dead" star, Norman Reedus, is friends with Mastodon's guitar player, Brent Hinds. They got matching Lemmy tattoos on an episode of Reedus' show "Ride". I also think you might like their song "Oblivion". Their early stuff which is pre- "Crack The Skye", is a bit harsh vocal-wise and rough musically. With that album, they really found their sound and it shines. Peace...
This song made me cry once. Mastodon has a lot of variety in their sound, and not a lot of their songs sound the way this one sounds. But there are two amazing songs that you will probably like since you liked this one. Check out The Czar and The Last Baron.
Its some kind of a cool blend of "Ozzy'z voice" and "Kind Diamonds" way of building up a universe of music?!? ...in the coolest way possible!! ...and they alow themself to be LONG!!! ..giving the number time to unfold with no rush ...like back in the early 70'ties, where there was no timelimit on a "radionumber" (3-5 min max!)
Cheers, Jim, found your channel recently and am enjoying the variety of music you're exploring here. Since I did notice you like going off the deep end of atmospherics and experimentation, I have a recommendation for you: In The Woods... - 299 756 Km/s . the number is the name of the song. I checked around and there's no live versions doing it justice (they reformed with a new singer, but they can't quite recapture the lightning in a bottle that was their heyday), so I'd recommend the audio version put forth by C.M. Botteri, who is their guitarist. They might make for quite an interesting discovery for you.
I like the way this song unfolds, the way so many Opeth and Dream Theater songs do; a melodic start, progressing to being very heavy, then back to being melodic as you noted. It sounds a lot like Dream Theater at 5:35. P.S. I was initially turned off by their name too, but am glad I got past it. They’ve released a lot of good stuff!
First time hearing this song. The changes this song goes through are amazing. I don't know why I don't liten to more Mastodon, I like everything I hear but I never seem to go seeking them out.
@@eighteen-naked-cowboys Thanks I'll heh it out. Colony of Birchmen is my favorite song (I love anient druid imagery) and I like the whole Leviathn album as well.
I am not the typical Mastodon fan in that I don’t like much of their earlier stuff. But I do love Emperor of Sand and Once More Round the Sun. For me, those are two truly great prog-metal albums.
Hi Jimmo, finally... Mastodon! jaguar god.. Hmm.. Good track. It's literally their last song on their most recent album. It's good, but doesn't reflect their absolute potential. Jim, I mentioned another few tracks, please listen to songs such as "OBLIVIAN" , and earlier works such as "crystal skull" and "the wolf is loose"
Cracking song, that. Psychedelic space metal with a core as heavy as a neutron star. I was immensely happy to hear them play it again in Glasgow recently.
Just a question - have you checked out "Sound Of Contact" ? It´s Simon Collins (yep, Phil Collins son) Band and the live line-up is quite impressive, with musicians like Porcupine Tree´s John Wesley on Guitar. I´d recommend "Pale Blue Dot" - summs Simons style of Prog Rock pretty nice up.
Mastodon also improve a lot in live performance. They already annouce new album in 2020 in more heavy and brutal approach than this album. My personal favourite is blood mountain and crack the skye record.
I love how creative and prolific these guys are, not afraid to experiment, try new things, and grow from one album to the next. This was a good intro to their current work but don't be afraid to choose from their earlier albums. Crack the Skye is probably their most highly regarded though my fav is Leviathan.
I haven't listen to Mastodon in a minute. Nice choice. Sun Caged next please. If you like this, you'll enjoy Sun Caged - Ashtamangala The Eight Auspicious Symbols.
Mastodon - The Last Baron, their best work, in my opinion. I'm sure that this will interest you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JDHnME0LZ2w.html Jim, you should check A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, another ''Mallard's'' projects. A Perfect Circle - Judith, Magdalena, Orestes, 3 libras, Breña (from their first album ''Mer de Noms'') One of their best live shows: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EKrGLwvmB64.html Highlights- The Outsider, 3 Libras (All Main Courses Mix), Orestes, Passive, The Package, By and Down
Please Jim react to Ulver, I know some other people requested this band as well. A perfect song to react would be In The Red, which is something you will love, and is only like 4 minutes long!
I personally am way more into the older Mastodon stuff. For those who like Mastodon, you can try any of the songs of Asheran album from the scottish band Dvne. Descent of the Asheran gets extra groovy at some point ;-)
I remember seeing mastodon supporting tool at a gig in Nottingham about 15 years ago. Really good gig. You need to listen to some early mastodon they went a bit softer as they progressed. Early stuff is heavy. Also new tool album coming out in April so you need to do some more Tool. Preferably something from the undertow album. Also sone death please 🙏🏻 😊
it's their newest album as of now but they might be releasing a new one soon if I'm not mistaken. I'm interested to see what you think of their earlier songs such as black tusk. It's a lot more sludgy with harsher vocals
"Crack The Skye" and then go chronologically forward. Before this album, they are a lot more unfocused and raw. Eventually, check it all out as you never know what you may like.
The last baron by mastodon is a really good song has a very frank zappa style part in it. Can you revisit the ocean and watch the video for cambrian ii eternal recurrence, thanks
Ok I’ll say it. This album is good but let’s be real here..if you’re going for a mastodon introduction, please go with something from Leviathan or Blood Mountain. That was the absolute pinnacle of this band.
LOL I'm just like you about band names...Mastodon name has never bothered me but it took me ages to listen to Death because I find the name incredibly stupid and I thought their music would be the same. Ow boy! How I was wrong!!!! To begin your journey through Mastodon discography you really should check it out "The Last Baron" and "The Czar" both masterpieces from one of the greatest records of the century "Crack the Skye". Also, I think it's time for you to taste Opeth 70's prog. rock side...try "The Devil's Orchard" or "Strange Brew" and their mellow side since you were shocked Soen wasn't heavy...try "Burden" or "Face of Melinda".
