I feel like they always pick Mastodon songs that aren’t going to be ones they like. I think we all agree Ryan would lose his shit over stuff on Emperor of Sand like Steambreather, Precious Stones, or Jaguar God.
How have you guys not been recommended Neurosis enough yet? You'd LOVE a lot (not all) of their stuff. Anything off their latest album, Fires Within Fires, would be certified playlist for you. Come on, where's my Neurosis fans at?? Mastodon, Crowbar and a whole shit ton of all kinds of sludge/doom (some generic and boring) but no Neurosis ever??? We, the audience, need to step up!
Y'all gotta check out Twelve Foot Ninjas new song/video. It's a collab with Tatiana from Jinjer called over and out. The video is a trip but the song fucking slaps.
Yes. Cold dark place is an amazing ep. Badass. These guys are different and I will always look forwars to hearing what they come up with. Mastodon. Yes.
I really think you guys would like the song Stargasm. Brann's drumming in that song is magical. Crack the Skye, the Czar, and The Last Baron are must hear too.
they would have loved Oblivion too, but they heard when they were still fairly new to prog, the czar will blow them away, the new softer mastodon would've been perfect for them back in 2018, but not anymore
The first thing I thought when I heard this was YYZ but the Godsmack comment is so true. I'm not sure how I feel about this song. I imagine it will kickass live but the mix is kinda dodgy.
I feel like George really pulled some punches on this one. It was fairly apparent to me he didn't like it, but didn't really want to say so because the band has been cool with the channel. Whoever said the music was reminiscent of Voivod was spot on.
Imo this song is a decent piece of art but a bit of a tough listen. Like brussel sprouts...."they're good for you tho". Maybe George felt the same? Idk
Don't know if you guys would actually like the song, but "The Czar" (the title is much longer than that lol) is their masterpiece IMO Best song they've written to date. One of their proggier offerings, but it's so beautifully composed and has some sections that are just a fucking jam, man.
George looked a little unimpressed but I understand it. This isn't a song I'd show someone to show what Mastodon is. Give the other suggestions a try! It's way easier to get behind them
I think you guys completely hit the nail on the head with this song. A side note, the entire band are massive Rush fans, and Bill has been doing quarantine Rush covers with a few other famous musicians. To add my thoughts on what you were saying, once you guys said that the more frantic/tripping over itself 'YYZ/Godsmack' part was growing on you after the chorus, Mastodon has a history of doing that very, very deliberately. They open with the part that doesn't make sense, this wild jumble of music that takes the listener by surprise, but by the end of the song, every last part of the music has been given context. I think that's the phrase you were looking for, is musical context. The first section didn't make sense, it wasn't translated for you, until they got into the chorus. It's like reading the last page of a book first, then reading the rest of the book. It's a bizarre, backward thing at first, but the journey of coming to both understand, then enjoy that part that confused you at first is the best part of their music in my opinion!
I think Ryan and George just tend to not really love songs with odd time signatures and startling transitions as much. They love a good groove or rhythmic pocket that they can latch on to and move to without losing the beat. I agree that they'd love songs like Steambreather, Stargasm, etc.. like people have mentioned. For me, this song is an absolute barn burner. They came out the gates guns blazing with this track and I love it. I personally don't find it disjointed at all. I think the way they string together these different riffs and odd time signatures is pretty seamless and feels like classic Mastodon.
I've loved watching the transformation from two dudes that have no idea about metal/rock/punk to guys that actually understand the different genres and can differentiate different styles of playing. Lotsa love and respect boys
I interpreted the "yyz part" as frantic. That panicked feeling I imagine one would have if they were struggling in the water, trying not to drown. Great review! I'm stoked for the new album!
Disjointed= can’t follow along to the beat. Odd meters or beats do not equal disjointed. A chorus comes clear and is lifted by the oddity before it. These dudes, particularly Ryan, are always looking for ‘flow’ but metal isn’t always about that, especially when it comes to even light prog bands.
@@markyocum8249 definitely and this should be understood. Metal, I’d feel confident saying, reflects the human condition more than other genres. Even throughout just one song, there are many ebbs and flows, disrupting changes, a variety of energies, curveball changes, smooth transitions, shocking themes, empowering themes and much more that all reflect the day to day emotions and outlooks of walking this earth. Not being pretentious here, it’s just the way it is. A person doesn’t have to like the music, that’s subjective, but one cannot deny its power- both in the sweet and chaotic movements.
I would love to see a reaction to Lamb of God - Momento Mori you might need to skip ahead to around 1 minute 30 seconds into the song. But the breakdown around 3 minutes 50 seconds into the song will shatter your soul.
Love the guitar tones they brought back in this single. Hope that continues through the rest of the album. Very reminiscent of Leviathan/ Blood Mountain.. and man do I love em when they're in that pocket
Mastodon has some of the most interpretive lyrics out there. It always has some connection and means something to someone. For some real heavy from them: Mother Puncher. For something real trippy: Sleeping Giant.
Good reaction...This is probably not my favorite mastadon track...drums are shredding, loved the chorus, but I feel like this isn't the prime track on the album....similar to gojira releasing "another world" (although over time I've grown to love another world much more)..I'm guessing it's kinda them throwing out a scoobie snack for people jonesing for new tracks, they don't want to release the best track on the album right out of the gate, but to save the better stuff for later on in the album...I love that about mastadon, they are like a throw back to the 70s or something, where the whole album means something,...not necessarily a concept, but just the flow of the songs into eachother...I think that's an important thing that's lost in modern music, kids just looking for their favorite track off an album while skipping over other more challenging listens, that they might be missing out on...just my 2 cents...
I feel like you guys should try out some Black Metal. I haven't seen your guys patreon, but MAN I would KILLLLL to hear you guys listen to some Darkthrone or Mayhem!!!!!!!!! It'd be a step up for you guys because its super raw production. But Oh lord it would be awesome.
Great reaction, guys! Please check out "No Place for Disgrace" by the band Flotsam and Jetsam! It's the title track from their 2nd album released in 1988, and it's about Japanese Samurai warriors. Jason Newsted formed this band before joining Metallica in 1986 after Cliff Burton (bassist) died in a bus accident. Flotsam and Jetsam are still going strong. They just released their 14th album in June. Thanks!
Thank you! Flotsam & Jetsam does not get the respect they deserve. Hard On You is another gem from No Place From Disgrace. I’d also love to hear their reaction to pretty much any song from Flots’ debut album “Doomsday for the Deceiver”
WHY ARE THEY SO SCARED TO JUST 'KINDA LIKE ISH ' SOMETHING.. ??????????????????????????????? IT HAPPENS. IT IS OK.. TO SORTA KINDA LIKE A SONG OR NOT. AND ITS IS OK FFS
Usually their singles are much more catchy radio friendly (imo aren't good representations of the band) Listen to: Crack the Skye- the last baron The Hunter- All the Heavy Lifting Once more Round the Sun- Chimes at midnight Emporer of Sand - Jaguar God Hushed and Grim- Eyes of Serpents or Gigantium
Literally the only thing reminiscent of Godsmack in these guitars is potentially intervallic movement of the root note. Aside from that Godsmack hasnt ever played a thing close to this level of guitar playing.
I think Mastodon is a great band. However, I've always had an issue with how their vocals sit in the mix. There's not enough separation of sound and the vocals so often sound muddy. Just my take...
I know people are gonna keep recommending new songs of theirs but if you're really struggling with these guys see if there's any way you can't try to get a hold of any vids of their acoustic performance from the recent livestream they did at the Georgia Aquarium. There's a lot to be "learned" about the sounds they're making when they've been stripped down into clean guitars and vocals and it really becomes something unique.
Oh not to mention you guys are hugely into Tool, yet Neurosis (except the most off-kilter and experimental stuff) would 100% satisfy you more musically guaranteed
The Motherload, Aqua Dementia, The Last Baron, Roots Remain, Ancient Kingdom, Jaguar God. Most of these tracks are "easier" to digest, and I really think you guys will like em.
I vote the next mastodon song you do either be crystal skull, crack the sky, colony of birchmen or one of the better songs off the new album like: dagger, or "had it all".
This tune took some time to grow on me. Killer riffs, Troy and Brann both sound stellar... It's Mastodon season! This new album is already shaping up to be incredible. Since you gents are checking out newer hard rock/metal releases... Tremonti has got four brand new singles out and an album dropping THIS FRIDAY! Do yourselves a favor and react to the epic title track, "Marching In Time"! Please??
Kind of reminds me of Oblivion which is basically 3 separate parts only this time Brent Hinds is singing the chorus who fits within this part to near perfection with Brann leading off and Troy in the middle. It just works.
Please react to Legend Of The Seagullmen. Brent Hinds from Mastodon and Danny Carey are both in the band. Also Volto which is another side project of Danny's. Thank you
Underwhelming song for me but interested to hear the rest of the album. Still curious to hear their thoughts on a song like The Czar, The Last Baron or even something a bit more melodic like The Motherload.
Man, I love you guys! Ya'll make my day better. I work hard all day. You guys listen to old school shit, but you throw down on new shit too. I've been a subscriber for ages now. You make my old man even smile. I share your videos with him and he says, and I quote "ahh another video from them chill Brothers from Vegas". We appreciate the time and the effort ya'll put into every video. Much love guys!
Im only on my 2nd listen so far but im kinda feeling this could be scaled down to an hour and id love the whole thing. But still a lot of time to still grow on me more than i could chew and gigantium are my highlights like jaguar god they know how to end an album
