psychedelic as fuck...I love that part,...but really so many aspects of this song are insane....in the best possible way...the drums!!! so much work went into this song....magnificent...I learned the whole "live at the k pit" guitar....that took a damn while...want to tackle this one...I know it would be fun to play...
This album completely changed my outlook on music, and what was capable within an album. I wish the guys from Mastodon knew how much this album means to me.
Same, It's defiantly the album of theirs I have listened to the most. This album and Between the Buried and Me 'Colors' are always on my road trip rotation, then it will be like Pink Floyd 'The Dark Side of the Moon' to steady the heart rate.
Take pride, Americans. When they criticize American metal for this or that, and fair enough, just remember that no one else in the world created this masterpiece but those southern boys from Atlanta.
Yeah, this song is amazing. And you're so spot on regarding this album. This album alone outweighs what the vast majority of metal bands out there have or ever will accomplish. I also love Black Sabbath just as much as Mastodon and for similar reasons. Killing Yourself to Live, Paranoid, NIB, and Planet Caravan are my favorite Sabbath Tracks. I am fucking in love with Sabbath. Have been since I first heard them growing up. (Early 80s for reference). I got a few bands for you to check out. The two bands were heavily influence by Sabbath and are incredibly talented and unique in their own right. Both bands are fairly similar to Mastodon at times too. I put them both right up there with Sabbath honestly. That's my opinion at least. Anyway...Check out Electric Wizard and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Good intro songs to them are for Electric Wizard: Funeralopolis, Electric Wizard (self-titled song off their self-titled album lol), and Saturnine. For Uncle Acid: Deaths Door, Night Creeper, and Mt Abraxas. Mind Control is Uncle Acid's Crack The Skye, and Witchcult Today or Dopethrone (hard to pick) are Electric Wizard's. But yeah. Fucking love this track and album. Hail Mastodon! Also, if you end up liking the song Funeralopolis by Wizard... You may like the band DopeThrone. They are a super heavy sludge metal band. Chameleon Witch and Riff Dealer are two fantastic songs by them. And if you don't like any of this stuff then that's cool. Just like talking Metal music.
@@LemursManLemurs1 thanks for the recommendations, haven’t heard them before but I’ll check them out. I understand your passion for great music…beyond the mainstream shite played on commercial radio anyway! If you’re into prog rock, one band I’ll recommend whom you may not know is Karnivool from Australia (where I live). Best albums are Themata and Sound Awake. They haven’t released anything for quite a while but worth giving a go.
@@badmotorbreath5206 I'll give them a listen. Currently on shrooms and just jamming out to whatever suits my fancy. Some great Australian bands. I love Men at Work, The Chats, Tame Impala, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I'll let you know what I think. I dig prog rock so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
@@LemursManLemurs1 yeah I can see the Kyuss comparison. They’ve also been compared to Tool, maybe also because of the name. By the way, just listened to Funeralopolis… holy cow, that is some deeply heavy material and it kicks serious ass. Just saw you know about King Gizzard …Nonagon Infinity and Infest the Rats Nest are favourites 👍🏼🤘
Whenever aliens find the remnants of our long lost civilization, I hope they find Mastodon and save their music in their museums as we do to epics like Gilgamesh.
Just went to their show in Boston. They played this whole album, and then a few more songs. But I wondered.. how are they gonna follow Baron? They went with Blood and Thunder and all my internal organs high fived each other
LYRICS: I'd guess they would say We could set this world ablaze Please, please take my hand, please take my soul to rest So we can always be around It is hard to see Through all the haze at the top of the trees Hold my head on stable ground Watch as the Earth falls all around Please, please take my hand, please take my soul to rest So we can always be around Faltering footsteps, dead end path All that I need is this wise man's staff Encased in crystal, he leads the way I guess they'd say we could set the world ablaze Please, please take my hand, please take my soul to rest So we can always be around I guess they would say We can set the world ablaze Hold my head on stable ground Watch as the Earth falls all around Take my black soul Alive in the fires that burn my skin Guide my eyes all through this maze I guess they'd say we could set the world ablaze All that I have seen Standing on the edge, the foot of precipice Floating in the sea Past the king of swords, quickly to the shore The last baron The last baron Ghost of man Surrounds me in my slumber I have no fear As your wing is my shelter Cyanide he craves Coursing through his veins, providing him with strength To see this to the end Afraid of psychic eyes, faith in mystic power The last baron The last baron Will he save me? Will he save me? I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I still can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I can't see it I was standing staring at the world And I still can't see it All that I have seen Standing on the edge, the foot of precipice Floating in the sea Past the king of swords, quickly to the shore The last baron The last baron Ghost of man Surrounds me in my slumber I have no fear As your wing is my shelter Cyanide he craves Coursing through his veins, providing him with strength To see this to the end Afraid of psychic eyes, faith in mystic power The last baron The last baron Will he save me? I prefer most of their other albums. I do love crack the skye, but I feel like I have to listen to the full album to get proper enjoyment out of it. I hope they play it all the way through on this tour though.
That YYZ reference at 6:00 and again at 6:13 blew my mind the first time I listened to it. This album is a great tribute to classic prog with a vivid and clear modern intention all over it that make it sound almost visionary. What a journey!
Just heard an interview with Bill ward on eddie trunk from 2009 and bill suggested this song he said it's brilliant. Who can argue with a founding member of black sabbath.
I've been listening to this for 13 years and it's still my favorite song. Does anybody else but me appreciate this masterpiece as much as I do? I don't know anyone that loves this song. It's a tragedy!
I think crack the Skye is their best album. Other albums have some good songs but this one I played through about a hundred times at work. Especially the longer songs, just proves how musically gifted these guys are.
the second best album is blood mountain, crack the slye is their best album, their best songs are, the last baron, the czar, divinations and quintessence, mi favourite songs from the album, the song crack the skye is good too.
An album about the drummers sister's tragic death, a spiritual journey and a dramatic retelling of the story of Rasputin culminating in the best metal album ever. And don't try ans argue, this is a really important album to me because my parents put it on all the time when i was little and i still listen to it as inspiration for writing and help getting through shit
@@yoloswag6242 better to me, i grew up on Divinations and The Wolf is Loose, not Megalodon and Mother Puncher. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome set of albums but I'm definitely biased
Young adults nowadays just care about young thug, doja cat, and like playboi carti. Songs by them just “slap WAY HARDER” than anything these guys could ever write, didn’t ya know? Lmao it’s a great shame.
@@AllCopsAreBigchungus Anthony. Im actually a school teacher, and i can tell you that 20 years ago, when people where focusing on britney and fred durst, there were some young people listening to the first gojira albums, or even on mainstream rock, bands like BRMC or all them witches. Same happens today. Of course, most kids care about mainstream crap, but there are still the metalheads, the undergrounders, etc. Most of my students turn older, and come back to me saying.... "now i know who trent reznor is"
My all time favorite album period. Any genre, any artist - nothing else comes close. I worship and revere this album. This is the holy grail - Mastodon's epic: Crack The Skye.
This album still remains one of the greatest albums ever created. The lyrics, story, and musicianship are all top notch and of the highest quality. This song especially, it just sounds like epic conclusion song, whereas most albums the last song ends and you're just like "cool, good album its over". But this, this wraps up the journey and sounds like something that would play at the end of a 2 hour epic movie that just wraps up and ends in a glorious fashion so when it ends, you know the journey and story are over. Lucky enough to catch them a few years ago on the 10th anniversary tour of this album with Coheed & Cambria and they played this from start to finish and it was everything I had hoped for
@@brentcrude8565 I wonder if you mean that you hope its an unforgettable experience. I've driven from Seattle to LA and its well, shit. I love driving lol
@@brentcrude8565 Mastodon and driving in both rural and outback Australia go together like Bread and Butter. I'm not sure what it is about them, but it just works really well
This is the darkest, most psychedelic and mesmerizing album I've ever heard. Definitely forever in my Top 3 of all the albums Mastodon have released to date. What a great band, I'm an unconditional fan of these guys.
I remember being super pissed off ... 7 songs? Wtf. I got in to them right when Blood mountain released and had heard most of Leviathan. I bought the special album that you could open and look in to and see all the great art. Then I listened to it. Seven songs was plenty. Probably my favorite album from them.
Oh for sure. And Last Baron is their magnum opus. Easily the best song they've written. Even better than Blood and Thunder and Diamond In The Witch House (those two songs being tied for my 2nd favorite mastodon tracks
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 Oh for sure. A great track. All the tracks on that album are kick-ass. Same with Blood Mountain. There is a good reason they are both in my top 3 metal albums. 3rd place being DopeThrone by Electric Wizard. Funeralopolis being my favorite track on that album. Highly recommend them if you've never listend to em.
I want to become a cage fighter for a number of reasons but having this as my walkout is a big one. That intro is epic for hyping a crowd up for some violence
One wonderful aspect of this song is that it intentionally touches and brings closure to the first four albums. You can say the same of the entire album, beginning with the cover art having all four symbols, but this song really feels like a perfect epilogue.
@@topuscuatro It mentions the other three elements, for one (fires/set the world ablaze; the Sea; the Earth). There is also what sounds like nods to individual songs, like Crystal Skull. It all goes with the sense of finality of the whole song. The lyrics are about the past and going to rest, and the music sounds like mourning and warning at once.
@@AxiomApe It’s explicitly about air/ether/the void. The first four albums are a series and after that the band retired the classic cover design with the traditional logo/font/symbols; at least until Emperor of Sand, which is also meant to be about a single element, more or less - death.
This album happens to be the perfect length for a 10km run. I only run in winter (I cycle the rest of the year), and usually set off at 6am withe goal of getting to work by 7am. In the cold and darkness the roaring fire that is this album just sets the perfect feeling and pace, and keeps me going. I've probably heard the whole thing a thousand times by now. It never gets old.
Has to be one of my favorite Mastodon songs, a journey through the deepest weirdest corners of an alien world, especially Oblivion and this one always make me feel like I'm in a tiny little space ship on my way through wonders never seen before... Its that certain magic that made me fall in love with them, they later then convinced me with all their other stuff to like them even more
I can remember being 12 or 13 and hearing songs of this magnitude and anticipating every note. eyes closed a million miles away. life can sure be grand sometimes!
Heard this for the first time at a mental hospital it was for an exercise. Literally made me look at the world differently now I listen to it literally every day thank you random staff member I’ll never forget you
Being a mastodon fan for years and sorta overlooking this album (idk how but i did) i finally have been giving this entire album an insane amount of attention, and holy shit. This is the best concept album i have ever heard, and definetly one of the very best top notch pieces of art i can think of.
This was the first song I ever saw them play live. I know I'm a little late to the game, but these dudes are the real deal. They have a unique chemistry and have forged a new path for metal bands. There's no pretention; no bullshit. Yes, it's commercial. But so was Zeppelin, Ozzy, Megadeth, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, all the great metal bands.
Funny how I found this song. I feel asleep listening one of the songs in this album, and I woke up some how listening to this song playing around 05:30 into the song. I wasn’t sure was it was at first then after searching for my phone I found it and added the song to my playlist and I’m still listening to it since.
Thank you guys for this song and this entire, beautiful album. In a way, I'm glad I only recently listened to this, because my younger self probably would not have appreciated this masterpiece.
Because the band doesn't have a clear leader, they all feel equally important and work towards the songs&stories, not personal preferences. So, beauties like this are born
