big money matches were harder in the beginning, the blanks weren't as obvious. i can't believe no one said, "mary burned her {bra}." the answers were a lot more innocent in the beginning.
Because it’s funny and mellow and mostly:) uninhibited then the panelists and Gene build that great rapport. Doesn’t matter when it’s from. Let’s hear it for timeless classics. Barney Miller is another favorite of mine:).

Clever piggy that’s Mark Goodson’s doing. he didn’t like it when the questions got laughs he thought it should be straightforward. But when he found out the ratings were better when they did he changed the format
@@Droosmom1970 More like he let Gene and others change the format, Mark Goodson wasn't that happy with the comedy at all thou the entire run of the show.
He and Brett were definitely on the outs, but his resorting to that Borscht Belt "take my wife ... please" shtick _so often_ really was tiresome and beneath him. Cringe-worthy, really.
SHE LAUGHED! of course she did! My answer was 'laugh,' both to the question that Gene asked as well as back in the 80s to a very slow-witted guy who asked me that same question...

Trevor messed up by answering scotch specifically, after all this was before they started bending their own rules for generals and specifics. This being 73 I'm absolutely SHOCKED nobody answered Mary burned her bra
Jack insulted his wife with almost every answer. It started getting more annoying rather than be funny. Why did he marry her if all he could do was pick on her looks and personality?
Agree. It got old real fast. I keep hoping that her children (I think they had two sons) will provide us with the truth about their marriage...but I'm not holding my breath!
Yeah but the show was a lot better because of that. That’s the most important thing about the show. It’s why people tune in. The show very well might’ve failed if matching had been the priority.
it's kind of an unintentional running joke, since he was married to Brett Somers at the time, and that later on, she became more associated with this show than he was.
Their calling Landon "Mike" , yet he was always credited as Michael. When Mike Evans was on, they called him Michael, yet he always was credited as Mike. Freaky weird
The Oddfellows are an international men's lodge, something like the Elks et al. I don't know about now, but they used to be quite civically or socially active, involved in community activities such as sponsoring Little League Baseball teams, participating in car washes/5K runs/golf games to earn money for charities, etc.
Put yourself in middle of 1973. The Odd Couple was a staple on ABC for 5 seasons (with the 3rd wrapping up production during the taping) and one of the panelists on the show! Not to mention, it was a Broadway smash and a very popular motion picture....ten times more popular in people's vocabulary than oddball or oddfellow. Then, the Watergate hearings dominated the airwaves for damn near 6 months. Can someone explain why the hell this contestant didn't choose the two most obvious choices possible for Super Match? Talk about 2 missed layups. SMDH. 🙂

She explained it on the previous episode...her mother took the name from a character in a Bette Davis movie. I agree with "saddled" but sometimes an unusual name grows to fit the person, for example, actress Glenn Close.
Its very odd that the winner at the ending of the pilot episode doesn't appear in this 2nd episode (even though Gene said she would return). Is there another episode before this one and not the pilot?
I heard it was common practice to use actors as contestants in game show pilots.Producers used pilots to sell to networks. Pilots were used to show how a game worked,not necessarily who won or not.
Is Richard trying to merge with Jo Ann? Can’t blame him. Jack Klugman derides his wife in every comment he makes. She is none other than Brett who is on this show’s panel for years, along with Charles Nelson Riley.
I've never understood why Richard Dawson doesn't speak with his English accent. Perhaps it would cause too much swooning ... they'd have to have a fainting couch and smelling salts backstage. 😉🇬🇧
I agree about the smelling salts! LOL. A British accent could have only enhanced his appeal. He'd been in the US permanently for 11 years by 1973, and he may have just absorbed a lot of American intonation in that time. As you know, he was a natural mimic; his speech might have changed quite a bit in that time. But every once in a while the accent, intonation, and word choice was clearly British. (And I don't just mean the times he was putting it on for effect. There are certain words he always pronounced the British way. "Again" comes right to mind.)
Two of these questions were reused... water_____ and burned her______ both answered by Stanley in a previous episode... maybe due to the bra answer, and bed answer, the show decided to not air it, and requested repeats of the questions...

@@pumajlr i've had success with a good chiropractor, a couple others not so much, they were obviously just trying to make boat payments, but i've had the same issues with so-called real doctors. i just recently stopped going to a doctor because i caught him downplaying the newest outbreak of coronavirus, we're setting records and his staff was telling everyone "the doctor says it's not that big of a deal." i'm not going to a doctor who repeats trump nonsense.
I don't think they're "acting". Being on a stage with a bunch of celebrities, knowing hundreds of thousands of people are watching/going to watch you.. your mind goes blank. That's why it's easier for the celebrities to think of an answer, they're used to being in the spotlight.
Jack Klugman seems like a jerk..always putting down his wife Brett who happens to be not there for some reason even though she’s a usual permanent fixture on the show
That's how they were with each other. She does the same to him when she comes on the show later. Btw, Klugman INSISTED she was on the show because the network didn't want her at first.
