I looked up Gen. Joseph Hooker, that CNR referred to. His information was off. The general did not provide women for his troops. He did throw frequent wild parties, at which hookers were probably present, although it would be my guess that the parties were exclusively for officers. Carousing with enlisted men would have destroyed his ability to command them. Finally, the term "hooker" predates the civil war by nearly 2 decades. It originated in Manhattan.
