Thank you! I can't believe I had to scroll down so low to find this comment. The Magic 8 ball was invented sometime around 1946. It was turned into a toy after Mattel bought it in the 50's. So it should have been the best answer in the 70's also. I grew up in the 70's and my cousin and I loved playing with one. Good memories.

+Ryan Schroer : True, a bowling ball isn't clear, but that's part of the joke. Madame Lazonga is a _really discount_ fortune teller! But the main reason why "bowling ball" seems to me to be a good answer is that the cadence of the words matches "crystal ball". Same number of syllables; same accented syllables. "Bowling ball" also has the benefit of alliteration, which can have a humorous effect. (All of which is why an answer like "meatball", which is also funny [and is also a common "Match Game" answer in general], isn't quite as good as "bowling ball".)

+Captain Quirk Interesting take. I actually agree with that. A Beer bottle would have been a very funny one. If you want to do balls..a bowling ball would've been the most common one. Disco ball would have been the funniest because of its shiny crystal ball-like nature. Meatball would've been hilarious, especially if Richard had said it("What Brett is..a meatball." This is what made the game so great. On manyof the questions, there were multiple good answers. And that's why Fannie and Patti and Joyce were so great in chair six..off-the-wall responses after a lot of the same answers were given.
