@funkeekatt I don't know the air date for this ep but whether Charles was officially out or not we knew. The same for Paul Lynde. How could anyone not know Rip Taylor was gay. Jimmy Bullock was too.
I remember the days when I wake up to watch the SYN Match Game every morning both weekdays and weekends. But GSN cut it back to weekdays ,and now it is no longer apart of GSN . I am hoping someone will come up with a new idea for a place here on RU-vid or DVD sets . Because I sure miss it a lot .
Charles seemed okay with that comment, I think he wouldve walked out if he had a real problem with the comment, and whats with Richard Dawson being called a prick?
laugh track or no, it definitely was..omit the laugh track, the funny one-liners and you find out how someone really feels..this is why is spend almost no time listening to stand-up comics: they mean what they say: the just know how to throw people off with one-liners and recorded laughter.....
What a great era. If this happened now, Charles would have sued, production would be shut down, and Gene Rayburn would be forced into going to rehab and be pressured into donating money to gay organizations as an apology while they demand his firing.

@drewdane40 Actually you're mistaken. Many gay comedians in the 1970s were in closet and the general public was a lot more naive than they are today. No one I knew then knew Lynde, Reilly or Rip Taylor were gay. We just thought they were acting silly because they were comedians. Keep in mind this was long before Ellen and Rosie and Will & Grace.
@@dannyhill8797 Watch an episode of a 1950s What's My Line with Liberace as the mystery guest and you can hear the unusual laughter from the audience. Back then they were aware of gay people. Gay people were portrayed in the movies all the way back in the silent era.
Your'e absolutely right! I believe Charles Officially Outed himself In the early 80's before then he would pretend to be straight by making little comments here and there even though everybody knew he was gay.He didn't hide it but he also didn't say anything about it either. :)
@tuttlemsm I agree. I think Gene was just joking around and didn't realize he went too far in essentially outing Charles. But the show must move forward.
funkeekatt is right. The "obviously gay" 70s actors for the most part were perceived as being silly, not necessarily as gay. Of course people would make comments about them being gay, but that did not define any of those comedians the other guy listed.
@funkeekatt Neither was Paul Lynde, but who didn't know? It was the worst kept secret in Hollywood. I'm surprised that Gene wasn't a little craftier about the way he said it, though. He was always a little more clever than this. I don't think it would have seemed as out-of-line if Gene had said "At least I only keep my suits in the closet" and left it at that.
Charles seemed upset. He wasn't out. Gene crossed the line, but I think he just made a bad joke and there was no taking it back. Gene and Charles were both cool, as was Brett. It's Richard Dawson who was sort of a prick.
never gave CNR - or Liberace - a second thought..then again, what's out in front of us nowadays certainly wasn't back then..there was innuendo and inside jokes..of course, today, it's easy to see without being told straight-out (so to speak)...
Wow. Was this actually on TV back then? Or were people back then not aware of "being in the closet"? Wow. I can't believe he said that! Hilarious though! Thumbs up!
@drewdane40 I disagree. The '70s was a more innocent time. Looking back on them now it's quite obvious to everyone how gay they were, but not back then. Remember that was long before Ellen and Will & Grace. All three men you mentioned were comedians so I think most people just perceived them as acting silly. Even as late as 2002 when Rosie O'Donnell came out half her audience was shocked.
