This is a unique video in that, for the first time, it features the restoration of a Matchbox Lesney, limited edition ashtray. Ashtrays are quite collectable these days as society's acceptance of smoking has declined and ashtrays are no longer as prolific as they were.
Who could resist the temptation of owning one of these genuine Matchbox ashtrays? - Not me!
I had to have this one and also had to try my best at getting it to look new again.
It took sometime but I am more than pleased with the result and I am now the proud owner and will have it permanently on display near my front door to receive car keys or loose change.

Welcome back Marty, I hope you and Julie enjoyed your walk-about. The ashtrays were among the gifts given by the Lesney factory to employees each year, they had a few choices to pick from. There is a pretty neat video on RU-vid by the Hackney Museum "Matchbox Memories"

My parents had the same ashtray, but as far as I know neither of them worked for Lesney, so how they came to acquire it I don't know, I also know it quickly disappeared after we moved from Rexdale to Orangeville in Ontario Canada.

Hey! Wait a minute. I think you are Marty, using a different name. You stopped posting videos as Marty, at the same time as starting to post as "Timo’s Dinky Detailing". Your videos have the same format as Marty, only with different music, a fake voice, and no Kevin. I think you got a pair of “thin finger” gloves, and went off to make videos, incognito, to see if anybody notices.

You cannot imagine how happy have been, as I mentioned that you are back. Thank you. I also had one of those yesteryear models. Got it from my uncle. Whilste I played with all other matchbox cars till they were completely ruined, this rolls royce was never touched. It was white and had red wings. 15 years ago my mother gave it to my son, who took it in the sandbox. Something happens elsehow....

They used to give these yesteryear cars away at petrol stations as a little marketing gift, so that children could try and collect the set. I have fond memories of the Daimler and the Bently sports. I think a lot of these Yesteryear models were repurposed into ornaments, I suspect, without formal agreement with Matchbox. Thanks for sharing 😊

Hi Marty....3D printer wise. I used PLA machines for years and at Christmas I dipped my toe into resin printing. I got an Anycubic Photon Zero, direct from them for £80 and have been using Elegoo water washable resin. Blown away with the fine detail I can get from the wee “ low res” printer. I think if you got one just now, while they are reduced, or contact Anycubic for a donation model it would be brilliant for your radiators, seats, figures and missing tailgates etc. Good luck in your new home, guys.

You have been sorely missed Marty. I watch many channels on Tube that show repairs, fabricating, etc of large farm equipment, large trucks, off road vehicles, pickups. But watching you work on those little vehicles is every bit as satisfying as any repairs of things that need cranes & jacks & 3 ft long wrenches. Great repair Marty.

Hi Marty, you can make the hole in the tube bigger on smaller diameter tube so it looks more "scale" just go slowly and do it by hand so you feel what's happening!! And get to the final hole size in several steps, also you can use the rolling method of tube cutting for all types of tube from plastic to stainless steel! A tip put a length of wire in the hole to stop the cut piece from flying across the room and being eaten by the carpet monster!!. Steve. UK.

My grandparents had a similar ash tray but the car was a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, and the tray was much larger and pressed stainless steel. I remember wanting to dismount the Silver Ghost and take it for a spin, but of course I never did. Cheers from the US!

That took me right back...when I was a kid my grandfather has an ashtray like that. The model was a 1904 Spyker (model Y16), and I loved that model. One day when he was napping, I unscrewed the model from the ashtray and played with it, and I managed to get it mounted again before he found out.

My late father had a cigarette box with a MOY model on it. I always thought it odd as a kid, to have a nice toy car that couldn't be played with. I seem to remember it being a Bentley, but I might be wrong. I think the shiny finish was aluminium, applied to the metal by vacuum plating - the same way that chrome finish is added to plastic parts. It would have been made gold with the addition of a yellow coloured lacquer over the top. Your finished model? Absolutely superb. Nice one.

I had the Y13 in yellow when I was a child, along with a pretty large collection of Matchbox cars, and kept them in pristine shape. After I grew up, they were played with by a bunch of other children who did not have the care for them that I did. The Y13 ended up with beyond hope, as the rest of them did. Nice job on the restoration.

Nancy Schiffer put out a pictorial catalog called 'Matchbox Toys,' right at the end of the Lesney years. It doesn't provide a great deal of information, but there are quite a few pictures of the silverplate and goldplate Yesteryear presentation models. I recall some were attached to Ashtrays, some to desk sets, and some were apparently put out as cars only. I could swear I still had a copy of that book, butI turned the shelves inside-out and can't find it. But I did see copies for sale on the interwebs.

Me again, I went and looked in my matchbox reference book, and I was wrong... it is an ashtray. I guess what threw me off was that it had no indentations in the mould where you would rest your cigarette. But not surprised at the ashtray, when it was a time of cigarette exploitation in movies, advertising and such. Great makeover! Don't be too hard on Kevin. I used to steal my uncles cigarettes and go smoke behind the barn... cough, cough, cough!

It's great that you're back. I found your channel back in March '20 when we went into our first full UK lockdown. I had to isolate from my wife so set up camp in the living room while she had the whole of the upstairs. I spent hours watching a your videos, sometimes until 4 or 5 in the morning. This video jogged a memory for me, my Grandfather had a similar item back in 1970s when I was a nipper, but the car was a set onto a rectangular green onyx base. The car was diagonally offset on the left, while the right side had a pen. The holder was set end-first into a ball-swivel you could adjust and the pen just slotted into it. As long as you're making these videos, I'll be watching here in the uplands of the Brecon Beacons. 👍

I would have never guessed Matchbox made an ashtray. I've used the tube technique to reattach Hubley axles before. I sourced brake tube from the auto parts store for mine as the axles are much bigger, works great.
