Brian & Michael ....... Their second Top of The Pops appearance broadcast on March 9th 1978 when their song tribute to the painter LS Lowry was number eighteen in the charts, and on its way to number one.
The guy who wrote this lived on the next street to us in Manchester. Its such a lovely song and takes me back to a time when life so much simpler and so much happier.. I miss those days. Listening in 2024.
I wish to God I could go back to 1978 and be watching this with my mum and dad again. cherish your loved ones now because before you know if they'll be gone. tell your children every day that you love them, and leave them in no doubt no one is loved more than they are. because you will be next. Carpe Diem.
Born and bred in Dublin Ireland I just love this song I’m 54 now and remember it well as a kid and loved it then. Thanks lads such a wonderful song and a brilliant artist, would love 1 of his paintings.👍👍👍👍
Hours after 'The Mill, Pendlebury' sells at Christie's for over £2.6M, I just had to come here for another listen to this warm, emotional and beautiful song, that is just the perfect tribute to this wonderful man.
as a photographer who was told her work wasn't any good when she did her degree at 35, this song from my childhood still gives me inspiration to not give a damn and carry on what I am doing
@@MatchstalkMenBand this is 3rd on the list of most played songs on a pub jukebox, 2nd place was Diana Ross, in 1st place was Procul Harum whiter shade of pale(at the time which was a few years back)
From Algeria (63 years old), I love it ! this is one of the sweetest songs I have ever heard. I never tire of listening to it. The singers are so nice and the kids are so adorable
@@StarzzyJJASD I think TOTP was usually shot in Television Centre, which is in London. But yes, the song was _about_ L. S. Lowry the painter, who painted mostly scenes of Salford.
The thing I love about L.S. Lowry is he kept on doing what he loved. He certainly didn't let Southerners dictate terms. Lowry's success gave countless Northern Artists of all kinds 'permission' to take no notice of the posh Art World, and go for it anyway.
Left Salford for Canada in 1974 and here I am in 2020 watching You tube videos of Salford and just heard this song for the first time. What a beautiful song about a brilliant artist. My Canadian wife tells me you can take the boy out of Salford but you can't take Salford out of the boy - how true. A proud Salford lad forever.
I`m so jealous,i was born a scouser but live in Manc for 32 years and still here.If you love where your born, perfect but if you don`t theres not much you can do about it.
I have lived in New Zealand since 1956 and I have only just recently found this video. I went to school in Manchester and worked there for ten years I now play this song on my ukulele and mouth organ. Derek Finegan
This song is a proper working class song I absolutely love this it reminds me of my childhood days it brings a tear to my eye.Tell is about your ways and all about your Salford ways is it true your just an ordinary chap great lyrics
Oh wow, i was 13 years old when this record came out and it was my favorite record. This brought back so many happy memories of a time when all i had to worry about was which sweets you were going to get a quarter of weighed out(Yorkshire mixtures please). Whatever happened to music like this that was so powerful and still to this day has the ability to stir up emotions from the past. Within seconds of playing this video i was in floods of tears and was instantly transported back to happier times. For that and for giving the world such a wonderful piece of music i would like to say thank you Brian and Michael. The world is a better place for the gift of your music. Peace.
I've been to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and to the Picasso in Barcelona but the only artist who ever spoke directly to me - northerner that I am - through his work was Lowry. A lovely tribute to a legend.
My kids learned this song in primary school, alongside their topic about Lowery. Awesome that 30 years later, it is still relevant. And nice for them to learn, and hear, something northern!
You will never know just how much I "LOVE" this song and this video, so many happy memory's come flooding back, seeing the girls (my friends) as I remember them at stage school, is wonderful, Thank you so much for posting this on RU-vid, "and for everything else", best wishes from Keith M.
Hopefully, many years! Sorry, I'm only messing! The guys that wrote this lived in my local area Woodley, Stockport and I'm told that they used to drink at my local!
Great song and probably one of the catchiest songs in British song history. Kids to this day love it if you play it to them. Great performance there on TOTP too
i totally loved this when it came out when i was about 11yrs old,i was fortunate enough to meet them then when they played at a music venue at our local hotel in Warwickshire.Although i was too young to go to such venues at the time,my friends mum worked there and got me in. They were great guys and, as i was learning guitar at the time (still play today at 54) , they gave me a small set of guitar tuning pan pipes. they told me they would shortly be appearing on 'Magpie'. remember that?
Matchstalkmen band. I remember watching this on Top of the Pops as an eight year old, not having a clue what the song was about but loving the tune and melody and then it became popular with our school in Plymouth Devon and so our teachers then educated us on the Artist L.S.Lowry and his significance. Such a beautiful song captured perfectly for me the relevance of Lowry.
I'm now 73 and have loved lowry from an early age and I have 2 of his prints in my walls I went to see his video when I was in Salford many years ago x ❤❤❤
I know it's really sentimental and clichéd, but there is something about this lovely song that I cherish. It paints a picture of a world that has vanished.
this is music to my ears one of my all time faveourite songs bryan and michael a great wonderful memory here for me here i was 8 when this was in the charts and on holiday at barry island butlins in cardiff my home town both me and my mum and dad allways used to all sing to this and still do a great big thx to the uploader here is is something special here.
57 this month and that takes me right back to the seventies in Wigan. He was the painter of life for the working classes in the twentieth century. No further praise need be offered or needed.
36 years old and a huge lover of this generation in music,I'm embarrassed to say this is the the first time I've heard this song, wow it has triggered something and made me smile like I was 8 again, simple catchy and what I call proper music.🙂
While Standing waiting for a bus the other day I had some music on my phone so i decided to listen to it and this song was one of them. The Words The Song was very touching it`s amazing how good it is even today i really enjoyed listening to i,even now that song is in my head. what a great tribute song.
I remember very clearly watching this on top of the pops back in 1978 (45 years ago now) ... but what's really amazing was in that very same week, 9th of March 1978, we also had in the top ten = Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights ELO - Mr. Blue Sky, Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street The Bee Gees - Staying Alive Blondie - Denis ABBA - Take A Chance On Me
Then all we got was crap it was the best time for music plus growing up in the 70s it was fun and easy no restrictions we had some great music then we were lucky very lucky to experience those days ? James
This is one of those truly great songs that just pops into your head every now & again. I visited Southampton Art Museum a few days ago & they have two brilliant Lowry’s on display… since then I’ve not been able to stop this wonderful song from playing in my head!
Just played this to my 16 y/o daughter… it made me cry! I was eight when this was released and I watched it on TOTP and sang it in the streets with my friends… I moved from Salford when I was 18, now they may say you can take the girl out of Salford, but you can’t take Salford out of the girl! A 1,001 memories came back from my childhood and playing on ‘bomb sites’ and ‘crofts’! Making Sloopy-do-dah from mud and wrapping it up in discarded plastic trays from the chippy, then wrapping it up in yesterday day’s newspaper! Going to find wood for the ‘bonnie’; making the best guy (using our mams American tan tights 🙈 for his head) and getting to all the best puds first at just the right time and asking ‘hey mister, got a penny for our guy’?… We’d go off and buy sweets and chocolate with the money we’d made … Best time of our lives our childhood’s and we don’t even know it, nor believed it when anyone said so… now approaching mid 50’s, I’d definitely say… stay young no matter your age! 🥰
He painted Salford's smokey tops On cardboard boxes from the shops And parts of ancoats where I used to play I'm sure he once walked down our street 'Cause he painted kids who had nowt on their feet The clothes we wore had all seen better days Now they said his works of art were dull No room all round, the walls are full But Lowry didn't care much anyway They said he just paints cats and dogs And matchstalk men in boots and clogs And Lowry said that's just the way they'll stay And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them factory gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs Now canvas and brushes were wearing thin When London started calling him To come on down and wear the old flat cap They said tell us all about your ways And all about them Salford days Is it true you're just an ordinary chap? And he painted matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He painted kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them factory gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs Now Lowry's hang upon the wall Beside the greatest of them all And even the Mona Lisa takes a bow This tired old man with hair like snow Told northern folk it's time to go The fever came and the good lord mopped his brow And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs And he left us matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs He left us kids on the corner of the street that were sparking clogs Now he takes his brush and he waits Outside them pearly gates To paint his matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs
I was lucky enough to meet the people who sang this and they are obviously quite old now but it was an amazing experience. This song really does remind people of home, I love it.
@@MatchstalkMenBand I loved this song as a child. I used to sing along when it was on Top of the Pops. Now? It just seems to make me cry. It's such a beautiful song.
I met Michael Coleman and Brian Burke as a comedy duo Burke and Jerk in Fagins in Manchester in the 1977, they were fabulous very friendly. FA Cup 1977 Liverpool v Manchester United man utd won 2-1 and they came into Fagins to celebrate and my mate and I went for a drink with them to celebrate
Didn't have a clue who Lowry was then after this came out the only thing I wanted for my 18th was a print of his pictures they've been put up in every house I've lived in for the last 40 years
Salfordian born and bred and very proud of my roots. I'm in my 60's now and left Salford 15 years ago for another country. This brings back so many memories of people and places, along with a few tears. I still miss the dirty old town 😢
Wonderful song. I've been in awe of it ever since I heard it on the BBC. You may not know, but in Russia there is such a genre - the author's song. Music is not so important, poetry means more. It is usually sung with a guitar. This is a real Russian author's song. In English. Okudzhava is higher, but here the level is absolutely incredible.
You should check out an artist called Ren, his story telling and guitar are phenomenal but he switches genre so he also has rap songs but for an amazing story told while doing amazing things with a classical guitar I recommend you start with The tale of Jenny & Screech. It's about 10 minutes long but is so good. Also most of the stuff he does he plays live
An LS Lowry painting described as an "iconic masterpiece" has been sold at auction for a record-breaking £7.8 million. Going To The Match depicts a bustling throng of people gathered at Burnden Park football stadium, former home of Bolton Wanderers. The 1953 piece had been loaned to The Lowry arts centre in Salford by the Players Foundation.
