For many years tapes of an album made by singer/songwriter Peter Sarstedt had been thought lost forever. Recorded in the seventies with musicians from his home in Copenhagen, the album of original compositions was never released. Over the years the tapes were destroyed and it was only by chance that the album's producer came across some safety master copies during
a clean out of his loft. He immediately had the delicate tapes digitally mastered, so now we can hear these lovely songs as the composer originally intended.

Very few songs tell such a story, such as this one does. I heard this back in the 60s and, even as I am now approaching 77, it remains one of my very favourite songs. God bless you, Peter, rest in eternal peace, and thank you for such a timeless song.

Donvale, & Warrendyte, where we used to play down the old Gold-mines. Bet yer drove back to EAST Ringwood, via Springvale Rd, then? I don't like the way all our suburb-names are being changed, like North Balwyn (?Calling, ?Skyhooks) to Balwyn North, & East Doncaster, to Doncaster East. etc. Go Well.

Peter's elder brother Richard had already had a no1 hit in the UK, "Well I Ask You" in 1961, when he sang under the name Eden Kane. When Peter reached no1 it made them the first brothers to have solo no1s in Britain. In 1976 their other brother Robin, reached 3 in the UK with his version of Hoagy Carmichael's "My Resistance Is Low," enabling the Sarstedt clan to become the only three brothers in British chart history to rack up separate solo hits.

He and his brother Eden Kane came from from Croydon, my place of birth and Peter died in Sussex, my current home county, so the emotional connections are with more than the music. I was a young kid when this came out. I have listened to it many times..and just realised that Peter Sarstedt is only just singing the lyrics; almost talking them in fact, and that this was a deliberate approach to the song. LYRICS You talk like Marlene Dietrich And you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire Your clothes are all made by Balmain And there's diamonds and pearls in your hair Yes, there are You live in a fancy apartment Off the Boulevard St. Michel Where you keep your Rolling Stones records And a friend of Sacha Distel Yes, you do But where do you go to my lovely When you're alone in your bed? Tell me the thoughts that surround you I want to look inside your head Yes, I do I've seen all your qualifications You got from the Sorbonne And the painting you stole from Picasso Your loveliness goes on and on Yes, it does When you go on your summer vacation You go to Juan-les-Pins With your carefully designed topless swimsuit You get an even suntan On your back and on your legs And when the snow falls you're found in St. Moritz With the others of the jet-set And you sip your Napoleon Brandy But you never get your lips wet No, you don't But where do you go to my lovely When you're alone in your bed? Won't you tell me the thoughts that surround you? I want to look inside your head Yes, I do Your name, it is heard in high places You know the Aga Khan He sent you a race horse for Christmas And you keep it just for fun For a laugh Ha-ha-ha-ha Oh, they say that when you get married It'll be to a millionaire But they don't realise where you came from And I wonder if they really care Or give a damn Where do you go to my lovely When you're alone in your bed? Tell me the thoughts that surround you I want to look inside your head Yes, I do I remember the back streets of Naples Two children begging in the rags Both touched with a burning ambition To shake off their lowly-born tags So they tried So look into my face, Marie-Claire And remember just who you are Then go and forget me forever But I know you still bear the scar Deep inside Yes, you do I know where you go to my lovely When you're alone in your bed I know the thoughts that surround you 'Cause I can look inside your head
