As an Australian, I was fortunate to live and work, on and off in Tonga for several years and ended up married to a Tongan girl (our son who now towers over me, plays Union and League and is hopeful of one day playing for Mate Ma’a Tonga or Ikale Tahi). The “Sipi Tau” brings tears of emotion (fond memories of a beautiful simple place, wonderfully generous and friendly people) and pride, every time I watch a game and sends chills down my spine (and I admit to being a “collaborator” - always cheering for Tonga in my Mate Ma’a Tonga shirt and Red Beenie, even if they play the Aussies).
