I wouldn't say they are expensive. This is solid professional level cookware. It will last a lifetime. Not like coated cookware and "non-stick" cookware that needs replacing every couple a years. Handles don't come loose, or get rusty. These pans only get better and better the more you use them. I have two pans, a 9 1/2" and an 11". Both where quick to season, but only got truly non-stick with use. I still use my All-Clad skillets when cooking tomato based dishes, foods with lemon, and other acidic ingredients.

I have four. They are wonderful and very reasonably priced. I will never use my All Clads again. Plus, the carbon steel pans will probably never need to be replaced. You might want to try the 10 inch crêpe pan for $20. It is perfect for single servings like hamburgers, smaller steaks, chicken, tortillas, etc. Despite it being called a crêpe pan, it is an excellent all purpose fry pan for me. Be sure to season it properly. You will love the pan. It is high-quality yet it is cheap.

They're imported from Europe, that's part of the price. The skillets are made by A. Turk GmbH Germany and resold by Matfer worldwide. I own more than a dozen Turk skillets from the same product lines which Matfer resells (Professional & Universal lines). I payed between 7€ (crepe skillets) and 30€ (14'' dual handle skillet). But I researched prices and found some bargains online. The regular prices are higher. Due to transport costs and customs, the prices are higher in the US. But not only are the skillets worth it (US made skillets cost pretty much the same and they last a lifetime), they're also quite fairly priced for an imported product. You could compare them to Lodge cast iron products. In the US, they are very affordable. Here in Germany, they are marketed as premium products and cost 3-5 times the US price. In comparison, the Matfer US prices are not even double the European ones. I dare to say, you get the better deal for foreign iron cookware.
