You can also do percentages (%) easily _in your head._ For example: Let's say a $70 item you want to buy is 30% off and want to know how much you're going to save. Well, you know 30% is $3 for every $10. And there are seven (7) $10 in $70. So, 7*3=21. Therefore you save $21. Whoo Hoo! Lets try it again. Item is $50 at 20% discount. 2*5=$10 savings.

I break down math into smaller chunks in my head all the time both because it's easier and because I only ever memorized a select few of my multiplication tables and I kinda forget how to divide properly. I can do more complex math like algebra and calculus I just need a calculator to do the littler bits.

I likede it and it gives you a new way at looking at math the only thing that i did not like was that it was going way to fast for my braine to translaten and calculate at the same time to make it stick and i amjust saying this so that they maybe can do something about it but still a great lesson :-D

This stuff is cool! It's interesting seeing that gal from Wonder Years narrating. I'm not familiar with any roles I've seen her in since then. Good to see a quality put together presentation of mathematics. I am studying to be an elementary education teacher and was randomly looking for videos on math in your head skills. This is a terrific resource. I found myself doing 19x19 in my head while I was using the toilet. I was only one number off. I actually came up with my own formula too. Imagine 15x15 using an area model. Once I figure out 15x15=225 then I can use that information to solve 16x16 and so on... The formula is to add 15+15 +225 or (15x2)+225

For those interested in how someone could do mental division like the human calculator in the video, it can be done by memorizing decimalization of certain fractions. Take 358 divided by 7. 7 goes into 35 5 times. Goes into 8 1 time with 1 as the remainder. So the answer is 51 and 1/7. If you know that 1/7=0.142857... repeating off hand, then the answer becomes 51.142857... repeating. I'm pretty sure this was his method, given that he only divided by small numbers.

It's hard for a person like me because when I do math in my head like for example 43+34 I would visualize the problem in my head instead of doing it the normal way. I heard that 2% of the population does this.

It's okay to use a calculator. Just learn how to do the raw form of the equation then when you have that nailed down use a calculator. Like the guy who made Wolfram said just use the calculator in step B, but do step A and C yourself.

This is a long time ago but I wonder if when trying to get young people into Maths it would be good to talk even a tiny bit about WHY doing maths in your head helps exercise your brain and makes you smarter in other situations. In this video they said two things in making maths in your head possible: 1) Seperate a hard problem into parts where there is an easy bit 2) Do the easy bit first. They could have added maybe 15 seconds by suggesting that this skill, is a skill that helps you be smarter with every difficult problem and so learning this process for solving maths in your head, helps you solve other problems in your head. It can be reading a difficult book, solving a relationship problem, figuring out what career you want, planning an event. Everything benefits from your brain learning how not to get scared of a bit problem because its trained in splitting up hard problems into the "easy bit" vs "hard bit" and then doing easy bits first. I worry when educators use "arguments to authority" which they joked about in this video but to some degree still did it by simply saying "just do it".

Three nineties flashbacks came to mind while watching this... 1) Kellie Martin as the Snarky Woman made me miss her as Becca on "Life Goes On". 2) Scott Flansburg reminded me of "Amazing Discoveries". 3) The title of the video itself reminded me of "Fresh Arithmetic with Professor Sid and Crazy D" on Fox Kids in the network's earlier days.

my teachers hate when i do math in my head. the number just apperes without me thinking about it.. and when i get the right answer they say i need to show how i got that answer and it just apperes for me but they dont believe me. but im not as fast as the human calculator.. it takes between 1 and 20 seconds for the number appear.

***** i dont calculate i "see" what the answer is, i dont know how but it started when i was 7 and got a 230v shock becouse i wanted to know if it tickeled if i put it on my tounge(yes i know that can be fatal but i did not know it when i was 7). and i have been bad at fallowing litterature in books since then and pretty much only read science related stuff. it do not seem that likely but it could becouse of that. the only thing i know is that when i see the numbers i write them down but they do not make any sense according to the teacher but the answer is 95% of the time. it may not make sense to you but it makes sense to me.
@Ganbalf
@Ganbalf 10 лет назад
***** i know, but i simply write how the teacher would get the answer. i am studying to become an electrician with automation of machines at the side. as an electrician i wont need to write down how i came up with the answer to complete the task. atleast my electrics teacher and science teacher likes when i come up with the answers fast. i am used to having to prove that i dont cheat.
@Ganbalf
@Ganbalf 10 лет назад
***** why would i add dragons and stuff to something that are true. i did never say you had to belive what i wrote down. if you dont belive me simply ignore it.

Yeah. try telling your teacher you did it in your head. FAIL. They all tell you 'show your work'. So I got crappy grades until I got to high school because I refused to write everything down. Then as a junior I aced the SAT's. And suddenly everyone STFU.

Just wanted to share my alternate method: when I do basic math in my head (like shopping) instead of multiplying things by 10, I'll just do one or two digits at a time (rounding), then add them and account for the rounding. So for the pineapple example, I would do 2.00 x 6 = 12.00, then .50 x 6 = 3.00. You'd get 15.00. If I was going for exact, I would account for the pennies like she did. Cool vid though, subscribed!

Are you guys having trouble with multiplying 11 by a 2 digit number? Well here is a easy way you can do it!,; Let's say we have 89 x 11 we take the number we are multiplying by 11, in this case "89" and we go 8 + 9 witch gives us 17, Now if you end up with a two digit number like 17, put the number on the right in the middle, 879 but -879- is incorrect, so what you do is you take the remaining 1 from 17, and you add 1 to the first number of the answer you got: -8-79 979✔️ That is you answer. But if you get 72 x 11 , 7 + 2 = 9 just put 9 in the middle of 72 witch gives us 792.
