Just substitute -b = a + 1 into the first equation.

Altermative and shorter solution with case 2 you receive b = - a - 1 replacing the b in equation 1 leads to a "difficult" quadratic equation a² + a - 72 = 0 solving this equation with the standard formula Solution a1= +8 ---> b1 = -9 Solution a2= -9 ---> b1 = +8

I have a question, as someone who is a high school drop-out who basically never touched algebra, is it normal that I was able to solve this in my head (got the answer a=8, b= -9) just by looking at the thumbnail for a minute? Like, is this supposed to be easy and just made to practice the theory, or do I have some kind of hidden math talent or something?

@@arnavraheja10 Yes. I knew it had to be 9^2 somewhere because it's the only thing that made sense, so I played with that for a few seconds, then realized it didn't work, so I started playing with negative numbers and it clicked instantly.
