hey trevor! i wanted to thank you for all the help in creating chords and all of your alternate tuning videos, i loved dadf#ae yet i wanted to make a more melancholy sounding tuning, so i lowered the f# to an f to make a dm add9 tuning, it's really pretty and i've already created a bunch of chords using the d minor scale, i used your tip of taking a chord and moving each note to the next available one in the scale and it's helped me find so many voicings. thank you so much for everything!

You and Uncle Ben Eller were the only ones on this platform that have explained how to do tapping very well. While I get your focus in on math rock, all the techniques you mention in this video are equally applicable to shred applications like Eruption as well as math rock songs.

I don't own an electric but I've heard transitioning from acoustic to electric is like going from college to kindergarten(in terms of technique). So it's actually really helpful to practice tapping or any sort of exercise on acoustic until you get an electric. Just some motivation for you lol

The basic exercise is also very useful developing finger picking independence and dampening control for playing slide. Instead of just pull off pull off and then return to stop one finger at a time with the other fingers dampening the unplayed string

Will you over some melodic ideas for tapping? or some shapes you find useful when creating melodies?

Quick question: I'm fairly experienced with tapping by this point, but I still have trouble with getting those tapped notes at the twelfth fret and higher to ring out clearly. Once you get halfway up the string you can really start to hear the bottom half ringing out as well, and I'm wondering how you get it to sound so clean
@chromaticswing9199
@chromaticswing9199 3 года назад
The main way to get rid of that ring is using your fretting hand to mute the bottom half of the string. Some people use a fretwrap if their fretting hand is too busy playing stuff, but when possible, try to mute with it! And just know that your pickups will not hear the bottom half of your strings, especially when you have a good muting technique. Most of the bother is only heard by you, not the audience. So you'll be okay ^_^
@TheGhostRonin
@TheGhostRonin 3 года назад
Hey I know this is a bit late, but you could really boost the sound of your tapped notes by using a compressor pedal. The compressor will essentially make your notes play at the same volume, regardless of how hard or soft you play the note. A lot of math rock artists get those really crisp, clean tapped notes and harmonics with the aid of the compressor pedal. Neural DSP creates amp simulators that you can run on your computer and they actually just released one with Tim Henson of Polyphia. With this amp sim, you'll have access to Tim's tones as well as a compressor pedal!

@@fariabdullozoda7310 cool cool. So for an amp I recommend the 50 watt Boss Katana. You can usually find those on reverb for about $150. For the guitar your price range is pushing towards the Squier Affinity series, that'll push you all the way up to $500 after- I recommend watching demos on those guitars and then picking whichever one sounds best to you. You're mainly going to be looking at Stratocasters, Telecasters, Jaguars, and Jazzmaster. The kind of guitar in this video is a telecaster :)
