I have taught Math with confidence kindergarten twice and 1st grade as well, we are about to start second grade. Whenever people ask are the younger levels enough I say ABSOLUTELY. Kate snow and her ability to teach math in a way that fosters mental math and a great understanding of addition, and subtraction. Multiplication and division, as well as other early math concepts that are needed to advance into the upper grades of math, her program doesn't just go wide in the concepts but I believe she goes deep. And makes sure the child doesnt just know how to do the problem but they understand the why to the problems also. My children are excelling at math and it is not their favorite subject. Yes this program is well rounded and doesn't overwork your child but its just enogh each day. Also its not spiral or mastery I would say it is a sandwich of both of those concepts rolled into one. Your child will master all concepts throughout the book while also spiraling daily previous learned concepts.

I agree completely. The combination of daily lessons plus review is a very good way to combine the methods and keep topics fresh in the minds of our kiddos. Thanks for watching!

Do books 4 or 5 address converting units? If so, is it dimensional analysis (cross canceling units), proportions (units lining up), or the small->larger or large->smaller then multiply or divide accordingly technique? Thanks!

I’m going to have Kate tackle the specifics here, but we are converting units in the higher grades.

@@thehometownhomestead Thanks, and also thanks for the videos! My kiddo is doing the Math with Confidence at home and we love it! I've been a high school math teacher and currently am a middle school math teacher, and I'm liking what I'm seeing in Kate's curriculum so far!

@@user-yq6yp8gx8e I can tell you my 5th grader is multiplying fractions with mixed numbers and simplifying them in his head, halfway through the pilot program. I have to write them out to verify his work. The mental math that this program builds into the kids is quite amazing. I have always been very capable of mental math, but he is shockingly good, and this comes after years of struggle in Singapore through grade 3. Life changes when we got into the grade 4 pilot.

@@thehometownhomestead Yes, I love that the emphasis is on a strong foundation! So few books seem to do that anymore. I actually tried to suggest this curriculum for our public school, because they are thinking of switching math curriculum. I started to write my own 6th-8th material, and at one point thought I would write my own K-12, but I think Kate Snow is going to save me the trouble on K-5! ;)

So glad to hear you're enjoying the series! Fourth and fifth grade tackle it mostly though the concrete idea of the small/large and then multiply/divide technique. I connect it to converting mixed numbers/improper fractions with a little rhyme that helps kids see the unity between both concepts: "Whole to parts? Multiply to start. Parts to whole? Division's in control!"
