I was in SA in 1985. Was up in the Northern Transvaal (different now), and then went to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Was in Namibia about 20 times illegally. Was in a boat, stuck in a swamp on the border to Botswana. Where do you live?

The probability of a god existing, is the same as our current universe existing (not that either one can be calculated as there is no baseline), except we have proof of our universe existing and none for a god.

Joseph has not understood the cards odds. If you deal 100 cards, they will land in some order. Now if you say they cannot possibly be in that order because the odds are 1 in 10^100 you've made a mathematical error.. You don't analyse odds on something that has already happened. That is a logical and mathematical error. In Joseph's world you can put bets on yesterday's horse race.

A fundamental difference between Christians and atheists is that Christians assume themselves to be the center of the universe, or at least center adjacent, whereas atheists can comfortably reason that we are insignificant. And say god did exist? Scale it down. If a bacterium could think, it would see us as the universe. How much do we care about our bacteria? And a creature or being who is large enough or powerful enough to, say, create everything from nothing, who's to say our thoughts and various arts aren't simply the gaseous excretion of what they see as universal bacteria crawling across a pebble? If god existed and created us in his image, then he probably puts as much thought into humans as we put into yesterday's bowel movement. Of course, I can prove to my shit that I shat it, were it capable of reason and the audacity to ask, which puts me at an advantage.

It was still warm when I got home and it still is. I'm on my fourth beer and they're pretty strong. Only two left and I think I'll be passing out outside if I don't get inside soon. Right. Just imagine the moment of conception. Millions of sperms were fighting for that one egg and only one speciific made it. Just a tiny tiny differrence and a micro second delay and you would be a completely different person. Yet you're still here. Now imagine us that are reading and commenting on your comment. The same applies to us. So the probability that the events played out as they have is virtually zero, yet it happened.

It's like a lottery, the chance of a specific person winning is tiny, but nobody is surprised when someone wins. Each ticket was a "roll of the dice".

I don't have any interest in the presuppositions of a person who thinks they understand what the post means. I want the original poster to expand on their words themselves. I only responded to the second individual's post like I did as, to me, their speculation about what they THINK the post means does not equal the meaning of the original post and, therefore, is a separate point. And given I was directly asking someone else a question, I didn't have any desire to speak with the person who responded to me. That they engaged in obnoxious speculation about another person's meaning lowers that desire further. Remember, it isn't being helpful if no one is asking you for help.

No matter how small the chance of something happening, if it happens, it happens. Low probability even infinitesimally small, doesn't mean something that happened didn't happen. The universe exists as it is, unlikely or not. Period.

I think the problem some people have is extrapolating everyday experiences of probability to something well outside of common experience, like the creation of the universe. If you sit down to a 5-card-draw poker game with people you barely know, and soon get dealt a straight flush, and then lose all your money to a royal flush, then many people would suspect cheating, since the chances of those hands coming up against each other is very small. And from a Bayesian standpoint, it would be perfectly rational to put the probability of cheating quite high. This is because the priors of the Bayesian analysis can be estimated from experience and the knowledge that card cheaters exist. But with the creation of the universe, we have no experience to rely on and we have no knowledge that universe creators exist. So Bayesian analysis is a non-starter. But that does not stop some people from extrapolating their everyday experiences to the creation of the universe.

The odds of what has already happened is 1:1. It happened, the chance is 1 in 1. If we want to calculate probabilities for something that has already happened then let's start with the rain. The chance that you'll get hit by exactly those H2O molecules at that time in that place you are in is basically 0 so if you get wet in the rain it's magic. Taking what already happened (shooting an arrow into the air and observing where it lands) saying that this was the intent (painting the bullseye around the arrow) and proclaiming that the odds of that happening (that the arrow landed right in the bullseye) is so unlikely that God must have guided it. This is also known as the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy. Appealing to a fallacy means you are always wrong.

@@mrsatire9475unless you are dealing with an actually probabilistic system like in quantum mechanics odds represents missing information. A chance of rolling a 6 on a specific dice roll isnt 1 in 6. It's completely deterministic depending on how it's thrown, it's just you don't have the information to calculate what will happen.

If you have 100 cards, the odds of drawing them in any specific order is the same as drawing them in ascending numerical order. The odds are indeed unimaginably small. However, if you shuffle the cards and then draw them all, you will draw them in one of those orders. Unlikely, no matter how unlikely, is still possible.

So I ran the math on a god creating the universe and found that it is way less probable than the number the caller came up with for the universe being natural. So for playing probabilities even though both are incredibly small, natural is still more probable. Does that mean I've disproven God mathematically? I guess according to this call or I have!

There was a time the probability argument made sense to me. For me what got me out of that line of thinking was playing cards. The odds 52 cards, properly shuffled, would end up in the combination it does is higher then the number of atoms in our galaxy. Hard determinism isn't true. It doesn't matter how unlikely this universe ending up the way it is. It had a 100% chance of ending up some way, and it just happened to be the way it is. According to the caller, if I shuffled together 100 decks of cards and laid them all out, whatever order I got would be so unlikely that it must have been planned on purpose by god, even though it was 100% probability that there would be an order of cards. The state the universe is now wasn't planned from the beginning, it came about from the rules of physics combined with a low level of randomness. It doesn't matter how unlikely the specific state of the universe is now, it doesn't point to a god.

Personally preposterous is not evidence of anything, though it might be convincing to an individual. Much of modern physics seems preposterous, for example. Thermodynamics applies to the entire system. Negative entropy; increasing order, exists within parts of the system. How does an intelligent creator effect a universe? By what mechanism does Reality Objectify? Why does this require an intelligent creator -- because the objects of your experience: chairs, houses, cars, &c. are intentionally manufactured does not mean all of reality is intentionally created. The probability of a spade suit royal flush occurring is exactly the same as the combination in ANY random hand. Every hand dealt results in an astronomically improbable combination of cards -- yet these improbabilities occur all the time.

You draw a card out of a deck and the probability of it being any individual card, like the two of hearts, or the five of diamonds, etc, is one out of 52. However, that's us putting a special weight on a card. That's us looking for the probability of a specific card. Now if I asked what the probability is that the card I pulled from the deck and flip over will be a card from the deck? That probability is 100% because we've defined the event as such. That's what's occurred here. The events of the universe unfolded because events unfolded. There's no special weight on any of it other than a post off wait that we're putting on it given that it did happen. But something had to have happened and if something different happened then be looking at that instead. But the probability that something happened is 100%. It's not that special and this guy has tricked himself into thinking it's a low probability universe.

Here’s the problem with his argument. He’s the arguing for the improbability for a very specific scenario. Not creator based non-creator. If you flip a coin, there is a 50% chance it’ll be heads. But there’s an infinitesimally small chance it follows a super specific path to reach being heads (because there are so many paths for it to take) He’s conflating the incredibly specific oath to this point’s chances with a creator v non creator chances

One reason that I believe there is a God or a higher power is because I did some research on the heart the other night and found out that the heart beats 100,000 times a day, 36 million times a year and around 3 billion times in an average life span. That is a miracle, considering one stop and your dead. So how is the heart beating like that when with one lost beat, the person would die, but it doesn't stop. How can that happen without a higher power being involved? And I mean not involved in the maintaining of it like doctors are, but who designed this process and how does it go for quite a while??

To me, things like 'reasoning' require a brain - it being the only example of any source of reasoning. We know that from very simple beginnings, it took 13.8 billion years for natural forces to evolve the first human brain. To conclude that some complex structure existed that could perform brain-like reasoning prior to all the time we know was required to arrive at the first example of reasoning brains seems to be putting the cart way before the horse. I suggest looking at things bottom-up (supported by the massive evidence of evolution) rather than top-down (unsupported creation, especially since there would be no reason that clear, unambiguous, obvious, and agreed upon massive evidence would be expected if creation were the case). Or choose one of many conflicting books of primitive myths and go with that if you find personal value in doing so - like many have done (via solely the random criteria of their parents or what happens to be popular in one's culture).

Deuterium is just the other stable isotope of hydrogen (the other one being hydrogen-1, protium or what we usually just call hydrogen. Hydrogen-2 is deuterium) with one neutron, one proton and one electron. Atoms is a weird place to start though. What about the six quarks? Gluons? Muons and other leptons? Gluons is such an exciting virtual particle in and of itself. It's basically magic when explained. They have no mass but make up one third of the mass of neutrons and protons through vibration. They pop into reality one by one, assemble in 8 "colours" and then pop right back out of reality just to be replaced, one by one. Modern physics, man.... To a biochemist like me it's indistinguishable from getting super high and making shit up except that it's evidence based so it's real.

i am not sure about the mathematics though i dont agree with the arguement it cant just be random chance. I say that it can because of the sheer unfathomable size of the universe- i think am correct in saying is 94 billion light years and that is just the visible and the potential number of planets, stars etc maybe billions or trillions so as an example the chances of there being other life supporting planets being produced are increased. Its like the rolling the dice scenario as already stated if you roll dices enough times there are more chances of getting two sixes if you have two sixes for example. i agree you cant prove a god just by using mathematics.

Fibonacci kinda does suggest that math points to God, many sequences and patterns considered under a philosophical scope are akin to procedural generation in a digital world. If everything was Chaos then we wouldn't see such perfected interconnected mathematical algorithms. From a spiral shell to a Galaxy we observe one of God's incredible mathematic insights.
