Matheson to Have Hearing for Pettersson Hit 

The fact that no one stood up to possibly their best rookie ever.. is just wrong.

That’s no excuse. If I’m one of those players, and he gets the puck, he’ll be feeling that hit the next morning. Petterson is one of the next young great players in this league, and the fact that his teammates do absolutely nothing shows me a lack of toughness on the Canucks. Don’t have to be goons for the rest of the game, but giving Matheson a tougher check than normal is way less than he deserves after that hit.

the throw to the ice is what is overboard and a penalty. the initial hit wasn't too bad. the throw to the ice is what went too far.

Matheson isn’t getting a hearing for the hit. It’s for dumping him on his head. This is probably a fine and a game or two but it’s just a dangerous play and it has to be a suspendable offence

I say this as a Panthers fan. I thought the initial hit was clean. The slam to the ice however was not at all. A 5-game suspension sounds about right. Hockey is an emotional game, but Matheson needs to learn that kind of move on the ice can't happen again.

I think that the initial hit was okay but the throw to the ice was a bit too much. That being said, people get dumped all the time but never get a call or suspension. The real issue to me would be inconsistent calling in the league both on the ice and player safety office.

I respect and agree with your opinion on the hit but the Canucks are not just playing to win. They are a young and talented team and in my opinion this season is more about growing and improving as a team then winning. This lack of push back shows how soft the team is and that their young stars are fair game to be pushed around. A message has to be sent to show that guttless plays like what Matheson did to Petterson will not be tolerated.

Is time for the nhl to crack down hard on this crap. They seem to be moving in that direction. Its easy to tell from a hit thats just a hit and this other stuff thats an intent to injure disguised as a hit. Anything that looks like an intent to injure probably is that and should get suspended. Im all for it. So frustrating seeing so many injured skilled players.

I agree on everything but the no reaction. Always defend your teammates, penalty or not. In many cases, they will look at the hit again and possibly offset the calls, but letting your scoring talent get body slammed is as ridiculous as the guys doing the slamming. To me, that's like letting Scott Stevens end Kariya's career and saying "oh well, I guess a full career wasn't in his cards, but at least we beat you on the scoreboard, Scott!" One regular season win isn't worth a player's safety. Just my $0.02, Shannon.

It was the slam to the ice that injured Moore. Very dangerous play. Not a part of the game. A slam is a move for wrestling or MMA not hockey. Ice + slam = injury.

I personally think that it can be worth it to lose a game to send a message to the rest of the league.

What makes me angry more than anything is not the hit but the lack of response from it. What is the point of forking out big money to guys like gubrandson, beagle , roussel and Schaller if they aren't going to stick up for their best player?? That was literally the main reason why all these guys were picked up

I wasn't even mad that the Canucks didn't go outing fight and chase matheson around but I think we got out hit after the incident. Im mad that we didnt at least throw a hit on matheson. That dosent get you a penalty so I don't understand why no one hit anyone in a panthers jersey after

That was an throw down to the ice. No question, it was an Intent to injure. Maximum punishment.

As a hockey player, I found the slam uncalled for, and the hit was a little borderline in my eyes as a hit from behind. Just my thoughts though.

As a Bruins fan, say what you will about David Backes but this shit wont fly if Matheson did that to a Bruin. Same for Kevan Miller, Matheson would be a targeted man, Canucks players should've stepped up...where is the response?

NHL has to change the suspension protocol, when there is serious injury like this, the offenders should be out as long as the injured player and the suspension should be then added on top. We might then see this type of immature play cease.

One thing we can agree on, is that the hit was fine. The WWE-like ground throw though, that was something else, and completely unnecessary.

I think the main reason people wanted the Canucks to respond (aside from the obvious being mad) is because many Canucks fans have so little faith in the league and the DoPS that they would not give a punishment which would adequately deter such behaviour. There hasn't been any penalties against any players hurting and injuring Canucks players since 2012 (and that suspension was still a laughing stock). If the league doesn't stand up for its players, the players have to stand up for each other.

There was no retributions because the Canucks were focused on winning. Would you rather win, or take a penalty that leads to them tying and perhaps winning the game? I know which one Petterson would choose. I know which one I want instilled in this team going forward. Hockey has changed.

Panthers fan here. He deserves 5 games in my opinion. I've been watching Matheson for years and have never seen him play dirty whatsoever. Not sure what got under his skin last night but I feel a suspension is deserved. Florida looked really good in their first two games, despite losing them both. They looked terrible last night. Definitely concerned.... Again!

If you’re carrying $42.8m worth of contracts for grit/insulation/toughness, you need to justify it. Also, they shouldn’t touch Matheson. Put Trochek and Barkov through the glass. Jake took -2- hits from behind in one shift. Nothin’. Glad these roster slots are tied up. Really paying off.

What a joke who cares about some points. I can understand if a club is in danger too loose his Spot and must go down a division. Canucks future starplayer is badly hurt and the players and the coach dont react.

I think 7 games would be appropriate. I have no issue with the initial hit. But that follow up is what was pure anger. No player honestly wastes their time with the follow up unless there is intent or anger. There should be significant consequences for that kind of behaviour.

It's so sad to see head injuries on young players, because they might be career ending if you get too many.

I don't have a problem with the hit, it's unfortunate Peterson got hurt but that's just a hard hit with a strong finish.

When the DofPS judges the hit on Pettersson through the lens of “old time hockey”, several decades ago, no one threw a skinny Gretzky to the ice. Like the NFL, you have to protect the league ‘s stars even if it costs someone a suspension.

There's a couple of things.. IF this was in march and you're gunning for a playoff spot, 100% keep your composure and get the 2 points. Game 5 in October.. you stick up for your rookies. This isn't a team that was going to make the playoffs. Even if we were, we're not winning the cup. Meaning, it's pointless to get the 2 points. Stick up for your rookie who's on pace for 50/50 and send a message to the whole league. You mess with EP40, you're gonna get clocked. There's a reason Bure didn't get rocked a lot in his career, yes Bure has a mean streak in him too but it was mostly Odjick. Gretzky had McSorely... EP has 3 overpaid pylons that don't stick up for him. Good game.

Agreed. Not sure why everyone is calling for a fight, at all. Unless you're planning to injure Matheson, which by the way, is a criminal offense and would potentially end up like the Bertuzzi case, that's gonna be more harm to your team than good. Not to mention it's a huge kick in the balls if you let the other team get away with the two points. The reaction by the Canucks + coaching staff was in my opinion exactly what the Canucks should have done.

The thing is, if he hit a teams goalie and then threw him to the ice, he would be making an appointment with his dentist the next day. No-one would have a problem if any team went berserk on a guy who intentionally injured their goalie. Should the team MVP be less regarded?

I get the argument that the coach might not wanted to be shorthanded but still letting Matheson know what he did could have also be a warning signal for upcoming opponents... They can't get away with this

The reason you go out and fight the guy that laid a dirty hit on your star player is so that people have to think twice about doing it. If I hit Pettersson, I’m gonna have to fight. It’s the unwritten rule of hockey. It how players referee each other. You make a dirty play, your punishment is getting a couple teeth knocked out.

The slam after the hit is a penalty, but it's not suspension worthy. I played hockey all my life and saw plenty of his like this....never seen anyone suspended for it. Most of the time it would just be a minor penalty. I understand the frustration of Canucks fans, but this is what happens when boys play amongst men. If something like this were to happen to one of the Leafs young guns then I'd be pissed as hell, but I still wouldn't think it's suspension worthy. This type of situation is interesting because you can see a big divide between fans. Some fans want it the old way where Matheson would get his head chopped off and would tremble every game he'd play the Canucks, and other fans want to remove this type of play completely. I hope Pettersson recovers soon.

The play to the left of Reimer seems like there was a bit of back and forth and then when the puck moved behind the net Matheson seemed to only intend on getting Petterson into the boards, it did seem fairly malicious honestly. I believe this would be Mathesons first suspension I would say they cut him a little slack, I'm at 3-5 games.

NHL officiating is "bush league." Plain and simple. How is Matheson behavior out of character? Truth is verified fact. The guy was embarrassed and couldn`t handle it. His character irregardless of first time or not is evident.

The hit to the boards I think is fine, the follow through push down on to the ice is not okay. I would say 3-5 games for an dangerous play. if he just hits Petterson and he falls down it`s nothing to worry about but to push down when a player has lost his balance is reckless and dangerous and that warrants an suspensions IMO. Hope Petterson gets back soon he`s really fun to watch play hockey!

I honestly think Matheson generally would feel bad about it. I don’t think he thought he would slam him as hard as he did but with Petterson being as slight as he is ended up just ragdolling him. I agree if it’s a bigger person there would be no suspension and I think that’s why the ref didn’t call it. You see this hit all the time, just against players with bigger frames. He will probably get a game or three and a stern “be careful with the young small guys”

Petterson was not head-hunted. Matheson should have just been given a 2 minute penalty for boarding (slam into the boards) with another 2 minutes for roughing (throw down). No suspension.

For those who says this rag-dolling happen all the time, I would agree with you if the follow through and the hit happened continuously but in this case there is a clear pause between when the hit is initiated and when the WWE style shoving occurred. The fact that there was a pause indicates that Matheson is able to let off the hit without any additional "followthrough" especially when the puck is no where near him and Pettersson. By going through with the slamming after this pause is a clear sign of intent to injure no if or buts about it. I wouldn't be livid if it was just the hit with a continuous follow through. That kind of play is fine and legal if not unfortunate. The pause is the telling part of the whole play.

I was wanting the canucks to finish more checks, hit a little harder, no cheap stuff, never stoop to the level of the opponent. Happy they won, but disapointed they didnt at least finish more checks.

This kind of stuff needs to be dealt with robustly. The harsher the consequences, the less thuggery there will be in hockey.

Honestly I saw it as a hit originally but thinking the point over maybe not so much. I can see maybe a hard check. The slam was a bit much it didn't need to happen. As for the canucks not defending their man. I am sure other teams are watching this wondering if they can take shots at the canucks or if they need to defend them. I would say for this game fine, winning is more important but down the road a receipt is definitely in order. To make sure they get the point, and it doesnt have to be so bad, we dont need full suspension level but give them a hard enough check or hit that they get the message.

You know Shannon, I've wholeheartedly agreed with ALL of your videos but this one I can't. The 2 points don't matter to me at all. As a real Canucks fan, (not saying you aren't one), I don't care if the team wins or loses. What holds my interest in the team is watching them put the effort in night after night, and watching the young kids develop. This hit, and hits like these on our young stars, jeopardizes the future of the team by potentially altering the development of our young stars. Without our young stars my viewing experience and enthusiasm in the team plummets. Not only for me, but the driving force behind ticket sales this year and years to come will be the development of guys like Horvat, Boeser, Pettersson etc... The 2 points in this game pales in comparison to the potential damage to Pettersson's mental or physical well being. Our young players must be in an environment where they feel safe and secure enough to progress and develop the skills to become better. Retribution against hits like these won't completely deter our young stars from being hit in the future, but they may send a message that if want to take your frustration out on our young stars that you should be prepared to get hurt. By placing no physical consequence on Matheson, you send the message that the Canucks are indifferent with the man-handling of their young stars. This is what is upsetting to Canucks fans. Hypothetically, if I was a skilled player for an NHL team, I would hope the GM would invest into having guys in the line-up that can protect me, defend me and come make opponents who cross the line on me, pay the price so I COULD PLAY MY GAME. If the team can't do that then I may consider going to play for a team that does... To clarify, it's not the hit I have a problem with. It's the WWE - style chock slam, which should have been a 2 min roughing call at the least. This is why teams must sometimes take things into their own hands. You can't always rely on the NHL to do the right thing.

NHL needs to do something on these hits. The NHL is so inconsistent regarding hits. If the player see the opponent Jersey number it boarding. Once he threw him on the ice, he should of least get a game misconduct. All I think about is concussed and CTE...there should be a penalty. I see him getting 2 games.

Say what you want about my bruins but win or lose I will always know that they will drop the gloves and have their teammates backs. The fact that nobody on the Canucks got into a fight with matheson after this is ridiculous.

I have no problem with the initial hit. The throw down was excessive and although it should have been a penalty, refs miss things all the time. As a long time Canucks fan, yes, I still share some latent frustration from 2011 and the abuse the Sedins took. I was similarly frustrated when our star rookie was taken out last year. Although I can't say I condone cave man ethics, there are still some old school rules in hockey. A price should be paid. If the league doesn't step up, someone should. Period.

I was hoping Don Cherry's "rockem' sockem'" if you can't beat them on the ice, beat their head on the ice bullshit was on its way out of the league. People don't pay to see mediocre defensemen with concrete skates, they pay to see the skilled players who keep you on the edge of your seat.

3 - 5 game suspensions seems like the correct amount. I the hit against the wall was a little rough but didn't cross any lines. Shoving Pettersson down to the ice is definitely crossing the line. Now had this happened the Marchand, many would be saying he deserved it and I wonder if the NHL would be having a hearing with Matheson.

Hit is ok. Slam isn't . but not suspension. Maybe a penalty. But if Patterson didn't get injured everyone would say. "Ah the hits ok" I hate when the NHL penalizes based on if the guy gets injured. If someone falls awkwardly, o man penalty. Suspension etc.. I don't think there should be higher penalties because of an injury. It makes it very difficult to be consistent with your suspensions

I’m a Nucks fan. I’m not that mad at the hit. I saw a rookie get smoked. I chalk it up to inexperience. However the team should have stood up for him. The NHL is so wildly inconsistent with their punishments, I’d be surprised if he gets a suspension. Maaaaaybe a fine.

There *was* malicious intent and a *star player* was injured. NHL needs to protect its stars (there are no enforcers, thankfully, anymore). *At least* 10 games.

I did not mind the play. Petty is just little. finish those checks and make him stronger. I wonder if he was already woozy from a previous play as he didnt target his head and he was still shook up.

The initial hit, I had no problems with, what followed afterwards should've been left to WWE.
