disclaimer: i'm from england so i can make these jokes idk what else to say other than mat does stereotypical english accents a lot in horrible histories so i put them all together all clips and audio are owned by bbc/cbbc
SAME. also i honestly don't know how true this is but a lot of people say that elagabalus was a trans woman so she would use she/her pronouns. just to let you know c:
@@ellisscott8905 for anyone interested: iirc the roman sources that are most often quoted as proof that elagabalus was transfem are unreliable, since their authors were very hostile towards the emperor (ancient historians tended to write very subjective accounts and even make things up!). in this context, the passages about elagabalus' femininity seem more like misogynistic put-downs (claiming that another man was feminine or assumed a female role was often used as an insult by certain ancient romans) than statements of fact. some people do believe that elagabalus was a woman, though, and that's obviously totally fine, since we'll never know for sure. :)
I'm an American who watched Horrible Histories obsessively for years and it actually gave me a really good base knowledge of modern British pop culture since they were constantly parodying reality shows. When I saw two Victorian ladies on "The Only Way is Hertfordshire," I was like, oh, so that's a parody of The Only Way Is Essex which is kind of like The Jersey Shore over here. lol
We've also got Geordie Shore, which came just after Jersey Shore. Omg if you want a crash course into the kind of muggery you get in some lads it's well worth a watch... I'm a northerner, and watching it is just too accurate to real life
I just loved him as Dick Turpin and how he can change from singing and speaking like a real Georgian to suddenly talking normal and using words that came out in the 20th Century. LOL! This video is actually what got me interested in horrible histories since I never watched it when it first came out. (singing) "That's not glamorous!" (talks normal) "That's lame.
@@caril.9384 I'm looking for Alison, I think she's hiding somewhere... perhaps she needs a break from my charm, I am aware my good looks can be overwhelming sometimes...
As an American who watched Horrible Histories obsessively for years, it was honestly a fantastic lesson in British pop culture. Like, ok, that's what a Chav accent sounds like. lol
@@laurenconrad1799 just fyi I wouldn't go throwing that word around, it's pretty derogatory and has kinda phased out of people's vocabulary? Although maybe my social circles have changed since I was in school lol
I know Elagabalus is supposed to seem like an immature selfish child but when Mathew Baynton is playing him I can’t but find him cute. The way he says “scrummy” is just so cute.
the thing at 4:34 is basically kissing your teeth and is a super british think to do, it can mean different things in different contexts. like some people do it when they are annoyed, others do it like at the end of sentences and some just do it out of habbit. :) i hope this helped a bit lol!
Sometimes I forget that people outside the UK watch this and I would love to see how they react to stuff 😅 I imagine some bits just don't make much sense or look dead weird
That's half true, caribbean immigrants brought the kmt (kiss my teeth) sound which was popularised in london roadman speech, but there's also the classic british "tut" sound which is slightly different but also sounds somewhat similar. My dad also does the classic tut and eyeroll combo. Anyway, both tutting and kmt are now common british reactions of annoyance but with different origins
I like Mathew Baynton very much I always have and I always will💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖he is the only one I love and look up to
it's a running joke that non-brits have that none of us pronounce the t in words such as british. i guess it's because non-brits think we all have one type of accent. i've started doing it as a joke, and i noticed that some of mat's characters speak in that stereotypical way which i found hilarious. i hope that made sense!
@@ellisscott8905 Ah, okay; I see what you mean. I did wonder that seems to be such a popular joke lately, considering the UK has so many distinct accents aside from that one. Thanks for clearing that up; great video!
@@ellisscott8905 I don't even have that kind of accent but for some unknown reason sometimes I don't pronounce the t in many words and I don't know why
So is Mat an elite? (I'm sorry I'm American unfortunately so I'm not sure when I'm being offensive I'm so sorry) I always thought he was just doing accents from different areas of England? Is that how it works? I'm honestly really curious.
