I wish this musical (and this song) came out when I was a kid, maybe it would've lessened the instances of me coming home in tears from school. I used to be bullied a lot when I was in grade school because I was small.
Matilda was my idol as a kid. I found that book when I was six and I've read it cover to cover like twenty times. She was literally everything I ever wanted to be. I'm so glad I grew up reading that book. It left such a genuinely strong impression on me and it has such a special place in my heart. She was so cool, she didn't take anybody's shit, and from a tender age, neither did I. matilda was more of a feminist icon and role model for me than literally every disney princess and I'll stand by that for the rest of my life.
@@virtuality9955 personally to the op, i think. Because I don't see Matilda is exclusive as feminist icon, but universally as empowerment for all the children- whether in abusive house or not.
@Alyssa I am only ten, turning eleven soon, and I auditioned for theat role as matilda but a 8 year old got it but it is fine because I am stillin the musical but as someone called mrs.smith.
Newsies and Matilda literally go perfectly together. I mean like a bunch of boys fighting for their rights and freedom, and a bunch of children fighting for their rights and freedom. Like has noone noticed this.
Fun Fact! this was the first musical I've seen. i knew the musical before i saw it and was constantly singing 'when i grow up', 'naughty', etc. but seeing it on the stage was so much more... magical! and that was the first step into becoming a theatre nerd and small time actor!
I credit the book Matilda for establishing my passion for reading - by extension, it also inspired me to write - showing me the importance of a strong mind and giving my four year old self a sense of empowerment. And, wow, this song encapsulates all of the themes I associated with Matilda so perfectly ❤️.
I was Matilda once and I used this for vocal training, I love it my fave song in the whole thing idk why I have the lyrics I know it off by heart! ❤️💖❤️
As much as I love this song it's giving me an existential crisis about wether I should do what I can to be happy or stay quiet so other people can be happy. Damn it Matilda, the things you do to my head.
Saw Matilda the musical at the rsc, a few years ago. Still love it! I can't think of a better interpretation of a Roald Dahl book. A true author. I better stop before I start a Roald Dahl religion.
I saw it at the palace theatre a month ago but it was by the RSC , and it was so good, me and my friends would start belting out this song and Revolting Children while doing course work about Matilda
Who is singing is called Josie, she is from Matilda the Musical Stanford (Stanford is the original of the whole musical matilda, Stanford created Matilda the Musical, after a few years he created himself in shows like West End and Broadway
I'm so glad we have musicals like this where we finally get things before america, this lowkey makes up for me having to wait till next year to be able to see hamilton in london
Singing this for my audition for Matilda! I’m hoping for Matilda but I’d be happy with any part. This show is literally so perfect I swear- Edit (this happened a while ago I forgot to edit): I got a callback for Matilda, and ended up with Lavender! Super excited. :)
I sang this song on my drama play, completely alone on stage, i got massive applauses idk if i should post it here on yt (sorry if my english is not good, i am Argentinian)
This song smacks of Little People from Les Mis. I kinda think that Matilda might be the next generation of Gavroche. Like Matilda the Musical is told from Gavroche's POV. I can't wait until I can finally see it!
I think about The Merchant of Venice when I hear this song, and my thoughts are "What if it's against the law to try to fix it", "What if you're so naive that you believe in the law, despite it being unfair to you", and "Newsflash, he's Jewish, it's against the law for him to defend himself!" He did try to change it, but he did it by the law, he thought the law would treat him equally, but he learned two lessons that day. The lessons are "Never put faith in the law of your oppressors", and from their perspective, "Silly Jew, Justice is for Christians!" He lost everything, including his faith. Ever since I have read the story, I always have felt sorry for Shylock, considering that he's the least villainous character in the story. Antonio and the others have provoked him. Gee I wonder why he got angry.
Jack and Jill, Went up the hill, To fetch a pail of water, So they say, Their subsequent fall was inevitable, They never stood a chance, They were written that way, Innocent victims of their story Like Romeo and Juliet, Twas written the stars before they even met, That love and fate and a touch of stupidity, Would rob them of their hope of living happily, The endings are often a little bit gory, I wonder why they didn’t just change their story, We’re told we have to do what we are told but surely, Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty, Just because you find that life’s not fair it, Doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it, If you always take it on the chin and wear it, Nothing will change, Even if you’re little you can do a lot you, Mustn’t let a little thing like little stop you, If you sit around and let them get on top you, Might as well be saying, You think that it’s ok, And that’s not right, Cinderella, In the cellar, Didn’t have to do much as far as I could tell, Her godmother was two-thirds fairy, Suddenly her lot seemed a lot less scary, But what if you haven’t got a fairy to fix it, Sometimes you have to make a little bit of mischief Just because you find that life’s not fair it, Doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it, If you always take it on the chin and wear it, Nothing will change, Even if you’re little you can do a lot you, Mustn’t let a little thing like little stop you, If you sit around and let them get on top you, Might as well be saying, You think that it’s ok, And that’s not right, And if it’s not right, You have to put it right, In the slip of a bolt, There’s a tiny revolt, The seeds of a war in the creak of a floorboard, A storm can begin, With a flap of a wing, The tiniest mite packs the mightiest sting, Everyday, Starts with the tick of a clock, All escapes, Start with a click of a lock, If you’re stuck in you’re story, And want to get out, You don’t have to cry, You don’t have to shout, Cause’ even if you’re little you can do a lot you, Mustn’t let a little thing like little stop you, If you sit around and let them get on top you, Won’t change a thing, Just because you find that life’s not fair it, Doesn’t mean that you just have to grin and bear it, If you always take it on the chin and wear it, Might as well be saying, You think that its ok, And that’s not right, And if it’s not right, You have to put it right, But nobody is gonna put it right for me, Nobody but me is gonna change my story, Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.
"A storm can begin with the flap of a wing." Slipping in a reference to "The Butterfly Effect" of "chaos theory" is brilliant.. This show has some superb lyrics.
I sing it literally every day to make me feel better considiring the fact i get bullied in school , my favorite sentence is even if you little you can do a lot you must'nt let a little thing like little stop you
Jessie 101 I get what your on about, but it was just a hetalia reference, plus I’m from England ~ Leeds born and raised. And come on, I haven’t seen anyone prancing about the streets looking like Mary poppins and Oliver Twist, it’s 2019, ~ ok!
Jessie 101 k, but it’s nothing about the people, it’s a joke about how small England is, and how despite being so small ~ it’s powerful, which is why it’s a comment on this song ~ also, it’s a reference to a character in an anime, not the actual country itself.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH MATILDA UR THE BEST SINGER EVER I grew up listening to this my favourite part is nothing will change matilda ur the best I hope u make more songs like this :)
