Matrilineal Culture in Art with Luzene Hill (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) 

In the beginning of the Museum of the Cherokee Indian's main exhibition, a small, beeswax figure catches your eye. From the top of its case, a silver thread leads you through the halls of the exhibition. Today, artist Luzene Hill (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) shares her inspiration and process behind 'Matrilineage,' now on view now at MCI in 'Disruption.'
Hill is a multidisciplinary artist, best known for immersive installations and performance collaborations. Through work informed by pre-contact culture of the Americas, she advocates for Indigenous sovereignty-linguistic, cultural and individual sovereignty. See more of her work at luzenehill.com.
An art intervention installed throughout the Museum of the Cherokee Indian’s permanent exhibition, 'Disruption' invites Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Cherokee Nation artists to respond to the removal of funerary and culturally sensitive objects from public view. Made using traditional aesthetics, the contemporary works disrupting the Museum’s archaeological timeline-drawn and painted, carved from wood, shaped in clay, woven in thread, and crafted using a number of innovative mixed media methods-offer Native perspectives on Cherokee culture, history, and current issues.
