I may be an American but I respect and love this marvel of Swedish engineering it may have been replaced years ago but this plane will always have a place in my heart
Wonderful to see the outstanding fighter performing again after the active role ended. The Swedish designed Saab aircraft are great machines. I have had the privilege of flying 4 different Saab designs and have very fond memories (still flying the Saab 91D "Safir" in four ship formation), namely Safir, Draken, 340 airliner and also the 2000 airliner. The quality of the Draken is such that we (Finnish Air Force) lost only one due to pilot error. The Draken served Finland 1972- 2000. Thank for the nice video.
Possibly my favourite military jet from the Cold War era. I loved watching the Draken at airshows in the UK. A great-looking aeroplane and an awesome fighting machine. I think the engine is based on the Rolls Royce Avon so there's a little bit of British engineering there!
The engine is a "so and so" touchy subject. An almost fully developed swedish engine, which were intended for the Draken and future aircrafts, were "scrapped" due the political decision to buy the Avon. Admittedly a good engine, which performed well in the Draken, but it would have been, from a swedish point of view, nice to have a domestic jet engine industry, for our domestic aircraft industry. It is said about the Draken, that in clean configuration, it would continue to accelerate until the fuel ran out.
The US fighter mafia, under the legendary John Boyd, in research for the development of the YF-16, studied the Draken, as it was one the best performing and handling fighters of it's era.
Proud of our heritage. As it has turned out, Sweden needs to do it again considering our underdeveloped big neighbour in the east and its behavior. Hope we can do it...
Marvellous planes and what a sound they make! I remember seeing those over lake Päijänne in Finland in the early -80's. At that time I was absolutely sure I'm going to be a fighter pilot, but what happened afterwards I'm not so sure. XD
Thank you for the great video 👍. the plane is among the best in the world. it would still be a great fighter aircraft that doesn't need to hide. I had a chance to fly that thing once. It was just great. fast and agile. Just like the viggen and the gripen. they are great planes. The Draken was simply unique.
A friend of mine back in the 90ies who actually worked in the Air Force used to say that Draken (35) was the last aircraft Sweden built. The Viggen (37) and Gripen (39) he considered "projectiles with wings"....
Under 1975 kom J37:an på kortare besök
The J35J-version only had one canon, just as the F version. The last Draken that had two canons was the older D version, later refurbished ton Saab 35 ÖE for Austrias airforce.
Men vilket drömjobb
