Will Menaker and Matt Christman of Chapo Trap House run us through their favorite movies that are great in spite of their terrible politics. [Note: Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers occur at 46:30.]

A regressive film with fairly good politics is the original Rambo. The entire point of the movie is that Rambo was used by his country and then discarded like a used condom. The violence had a reason: Rambo had PTSD and instead of getting treated, he had to struggle to live and was treated with contempt by the law. The sequels took an original premise and turned it into brainless action movies.

In the original movie, this is somewhat deflated by him just having an outburst and yelling “they didn’t let us win!” Particularly a let down considering the book was pretty consistent about having good politics in this regard

Nope, it sucks. It uncritically pushes the myth of protesters spitting on veterans (literally no proof it ever happened at all) and overall portrays American soldiers as the reaL vICtIms of the war, not the innocent Vietnamese who had their country invaded.

An amusing parallel to this would be the Ben Shapiro segment where he tries to decode how actually a lot of movies have conservative messages. Including any film where characters struggle and overcome adversity, because that is a conservative value according to Ben.

40:05 "Red Dawn" seems to take inspiration from a forgotten US-made WWII-era film "The North Star" (1943), which is about Soviet Ukrainian teenagers becoming partisans against the Nazi invaders in 1941. Both movies have elements of humanization of the enemy, most of the teenagers end up dead, etc. Milius had to have known about the film, he strikes me as very knowledgeable about Hollywood films.

27:10 "Death Wish III" was shot in a condemned part of London, UK doubling as NYC. The "purse" Will is talking about is a 35mm SLR camera case, the gun used to kill The Giggler is an AutoMag 160 .357 automatic pistol, a quirky gun for people who like hand loading their own ammo from modified .44 cartridges because they never made enough AutoMags to build demand for rimless pistol-sized .357 bullets. Why it was used in the film is beyond me (it's flashy-looking?)

The Matrix - It isn't even a question of sides, the movie in itself is just a call to completely giver yourself to paranoia and social alienation. Your friends, your family, the people on the streets are all Agents, the only thing you can trust is the weird cult of weirdos on the internet. This movie is to be forever championed by fringe weirdos. You've Got Mail - I don't know how people can ignore the ominous discourse about fascism on the background through a big chunk of the movie. Such a weird movie, but it does have a hypnotic quality to it. The Nolan Batman movies And My Own very personal opinion: The Misfits - What's the problem with eating the damn horses. Goddamit?! Horse meat is good for you.

The point of the racist joke in Chinatown is to show that Jack Nicholson's character is crass. (It was made in the mid 70s not the 50s, people were a little more sophisticated than this person thinks.) And the puking in Ace Ventura is a reference to "The Crying Game" Im pretty sure. Doesn't change much in this case, but I'm disappointed neither the original conservative writer nor Matt and Will realized these things
@MrJohndoakes
@MrJohndoakes Год назад
"And the puking in Ace Ventura is a reference to "The Crying Game" I'm pretty sure." It is, the reference is getting forgotten because nobody talks about "The Crying Game" much, because the reveal feels like a gimmick lost to 1992.

Andrew Robinson in one of the most underrated performances in film history Scorpio burns up the screen
@adamsmith7058
@adamsmith7058 9 дней назад
@@hoggers7572 A great performance, with a kind of manic energy that could go into hammy overacting, but never does. He makes the character extreme partly as a counterpoint, a personification of the fear of crime prevalent at the time, so that Dirt Harry's actions are justified. It should feel like caricature but it doesn't. I also loved his work in Deep Space Nine as Garak, a more nuanced character, but equally as dangerous as Scorpio. A character you get to feel a degree of sympathy for, while also being aware that he is completely ruthless and can not be trusted. Robinson is a pretty underrated actor and never really got the recognition he deserved. Recently, someone told me that he was involved in Left politcs and, contra popular opinion/myth, this held his career back in Hollywood. Don't quote me on this one though. I need to do some research myself to see if this was indeed the case, or a likely explanation for his relative obscurity beyond this film, DS9 and Charley Varick, another good 70's thriller that I would highly recommend.

54:29 the weirdest take on Old Guy Modern Action is the recent sequel to Police Story, because its Jackie Chan doing a stoic muttering Liam Taken performance. I re-watched Stripes many years ago, having remembered it being funny. It did feel super lazy, and the idea that any of these people were young enough to be recruited into the Army was silly, as well as the idea that none of them agreed to get a buzz cut. Literally none of them looked like they could possibly have ever been in the military. I realize it was a screwball comedy, but man, everything about it takes you right out of the premise…which might be forgivable if it was genuinely as good as its cast and it's just a dud.

Wait, since when is the 78 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers right wing? I see it as a critique of materialism, boomer malaise and disillusionment, obsession with the self via Nimoy’s vapid self help guru, and a post Watergate view of the government as an evil force conditioning society.

Does Social Security Send the State SSI Checks? The SSA administers (pays) the state supplement for some states, including California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, so the extra state payment is included in people's SSI checks in those states. While many states pay all SSI recipients some additional money, some states pay the supplement only to SSI recipients who live in nursing homes. For example, Texas pays a $60 supplement to those living in a nursing home and pays nothing to others. Similarly, Georgia pays an extra $20 to those living in nursing homes, and nothing to others. Maine pays only $10 extra, both to those living independently and those living in nursing homes. A few states don't pay a supplement at all, including Arizona, North Dakota, and West Virginia. Oregon no longer pays an SSI supplementary payment, but some residents with special needs can receive a cash benefit through the Oregon Supplemental Income Program. California pays the average highest supplement, making the average payment there $729 per month (in 2022). Here are the average SSI 2022 payments, including the state supplemental amounts, for the next ten states with the most SSI recipients.
