Anybody have any suggestions on how to get my hand speed, specifically doubles, as fast and proper as he preforms them? Obviously years of practice, but maybe any suggestions on practice pad routines or what I should do on my kit besides just jam every damn time.
@williamkillingsworth2619
@williamkillingsworth2619 5 лет назад
Chris Kribs Practice with a metronome. Don’t just randomly hit, control every movement. If you can’t do basic rudiments there is no reason to start with what he is doing. He is doing these because he is bored with basics. So learn your 40 rudiments Tune you drums to pitch. Especially if your music stays in a certain key the whole time. Example 55hz bass drum, 220hz snare. Out of tune is out of tune.

For these patterns as fills would the 5s and 7s played over 16ths or as tuplets? So the 5 pattern played twice with 3 eight notes played after? Just looking for suggestions on how to incorporate these cool patterns. Similarly with the 5 and 7 groove patterns with the quarter note pulse, is the 5 or 7 part over 16ths/32nds with rests or is it a Gavin Harrison type "override" polymetric groove? Thanks in advance!
@PeeDeeJay
@PeeDeeJay 5 лет назад
All those are great ways to implement these patterns: Fill in the extra space with singles, leave empty space, or play the pattern over a "standard" time signature while alternating the accented notes. IMO the third option is the most challenging as learning how the accent shifts every beat will force you to be able to play a 5 note pattern in 5 different ways. Good luck.
@ChrisSheridan295
@ChrisSheridan295 5 лет назад
@@PeeDeeJay Cheers for the reply! Love how Matt has such interesting concepts that we can have these discussions and put them into our own playing in our own way, it's cool to be given a tool to use then playing exactly what someone else has taught you note by note
@alesh_k
@alesh_k 5 лет назад
With odd grouping it seems the most usefull to practice them in 4/4 as 16th and 32nd noted and also as triplets and sextuplet, then in quintuplets for example (if it's a grouping of 5). Also maybe try shifting the backbeat or other limbs and make it sound like it's quintuplets (implied metric modulation). I'm sure there's more possibilities but I usually get bored at that point haha.
@tedted7768
@tedted7768 5 лет назад
i had the same question, still a little confused about the quarter note pulse overtop of the 5 and 7
@markomarkovic5729
@markomarkovic5729 5 лет назад
@@ChrisSheridan295 This is why I almost exclusively watch these types of videos. I love to see a normal discussion(s) today, when there are so many people ready to fight. On nearly every video on RU-vid there are too many idiots with the sole purpose of insulting others and meaningless quarrels, and I'm so tired of that. Btw, I can't wait to sit behind the drums and try to apply one of these tips.

I got a question for matt i dont know if he ll be kind enough to answer but anyway: Do you think a high level reader like let s say vinnie coliuta could sightread and play one of your transcriptions from a song from animals and record it flawlessly on the spot, what i mean to say is if there are people out there who could sightread this level of complexity ( ghost and all)

It would be great if you could slow it down. Do you remember when you were learning at 1st. You have so many drum teachers going a hundred miles an hour. That's great for guys that have been on the journey for awhile. But you could teach the same thing to buggies if you would slow it down.
@BeeBeeCJr
@BeeBeeCJr 5 лет назад
Lance Hollum Hey, you can slow it down on your computer and study it. It takes very minimal effort on your part, but doing this helps me IMMENSELY with breaking down and understanding complex playing and helps comprehend better what’s happening. You can do 75%, 50%, and even 25% speed. *select the “settings” or “options” tab under the video menu and select “playback speed” and adjust to your liking. Give it a try! Hope this helps!
