Matt Jones was a baller for real. He knew he could run and he did. Could you imagine him playing with McFadden? He was the most exciting quarterback we've ever had. Proud of what he did
If I could rewrite history I'd make Matt Jones redshirt his freshman year so that he could have had his senior year on the same team as DMac and Felix. Could you imagine?
Truth is we’ve had so many star studded foot ball players with natural ability and so many incompetent coaches who could just watch them win and then takes the credit as coach A few exceptions Kenny Hatfield and Lou Holtz (they were fired by Broyles for treading too close to winning it all and Frank couldn’t share that crown Matt Jones would have won the Heismann also Dmac or Felix if they had a respected competent coach
Most exciting player I’ve ever seen in person..looked like he was jogging while leaving db’s in the dust...never seen anything like it for someone that size
Reminds me a little of Herschel Walker. Looks so slow east and west, but when the shoulderpads turn north, those long 6'8" long strides turn into pure speed.
Put him on today's top SEC teams and his stats would be every bit as ridiculous as Jayden Daniels ' were this year... probably more so because of his combo if size speed and the fact that defenses were actually really allowed to play back when he was playing compared to today's game which is way more finesse, rules wise.
I remember the miracle like it was yesterday, at my Grandmas house in Brinkley, Arkansas with me and my pops. Had me thinking anything was possible after that, no matter what it was. I was at that cotton bowl game also. I’m from Dallas I loved rocking my hog gear to school that Monday crushing all the Texas fans. Also cleaned up on 20 dollars on bets in the 3rd grade.
Matt was so casual, lol. Watching him live, esp in those marathon O.T. games was nerve racking and amazing. Some of most fun games I've ever watched. Thanks for memories, Matt Jones, and thank you for the video, WarMachine.
Matt Jones deserves to have his highlights renewed. He was freak at QB and really good basketball player. Thank you for doing this highlight reel. Go Hogs!!
I have been a Razorback fan for 66 years and was a walk-on at wide receiver in 1974-75. Matt is my favorite Razorback ever. He was so fun to watch. #1 in my book.
The greatest running QB to ever wear the hog, he was a phenomenal athlete and just a baller. Trust me folks there’s not a single sport this guy couldn’t play and be good at. We love you Matt Jones.
Seeing the highlights reminds me of how talented Richard Smith, George Wilson, and De'Cori Birmingham were. Really glad I got a chance to see this team live when they played South Carolina at War Memorial here in Little Rock in the early 2000's.
PS I was like six and coach nutt led the whole team over to me in the hog walk and he was the first one to come say wassup that’s why it was so exciting lol
Without a doubt, the most exciting QB in Razorbacks history! I've often thought, what if Jones had been at Arkansas with Darren McFadden?! The Hogs would have been murdering teams!
Matt Jones could've been like Tennessee Titans QB... Cause he could throw the ball really good and that speed he had running.. But the NFL at the time didn't see it like that they wanted him to be a receiver man I hated that he didn't get a chance to be a QB in the NFL I think he would've last a little bit longer and probably not got into that other stuff..
Yeah the NFL teams still wanted pure pocket passers they didn't want any dual threats. Even though there was Vick, McNair, McNabb, VY, Aaron Brooks, Slash, Steve Young, etc. in the 90's to mid-2000's but only few NFL coaches knew what to do w there athletic abilities. Majority of coaches at that time were too close-minded to work w athletic QBs.
Matt decided to play wr. He tore his labrum his freshman year, and never got it fixed on his throwing shoulder. That's why after his freshman year, he wasn't a great passer, but was competent. There were NFL teams that wanted to draft him at QB, he said so, but it wasn't until like the fourth round, then they wanted him to have surgery, be out another five months. Or, he could go as a first round wr, and get first round money, so that's what he did.
Man this dude had imo all the tangables to be a quarterback. He has touch and his accuracy and patience.. Then if he chooses to run he has the speed. Then he was good at receiver. This guy is a gifted athlete. Whats his story.
Cocaine possession felony, then never got back to his peak. Sad too, because the year he got busted, he was finally proving why the jaguars picking him in the first round wasn't a mistake. He had 39 catches, 468 yards, and five tds, in just six games. He got busted, and suspended, and when he came back, he just wasn't into it anymore.
My dad took me to my first Razorback game in 04 I think it was against ranked Georgia in Fayetteville. Didn’t get the win but I’ll always remember the Matt Jones Era at Arkansas.
Ryan Mallet/KJ Jefferson, Matt Jones, Treylon Burks, Rocket Sanders, Dmac, Felix Jones, Jarius Wright, Greg Child's, Cobi Hamilton, Hunter Henry and Joe Adams on offense, Jake Bequette, Bumper pool, Steve Atwater, Drew Sanders, Jaylin Catalon, Detrich Wise on defense on the same team......what a fantastic dream I am having!!!
I have to say Matt Jones and Joe Ferguson made razorbacks history and fun to watch. I was a Houston But fan too. Running back Darren McFadden was awesome. Matt would make you Miss him and use those legs to outrun you
@Warmachine - I have been wanting to ask you if you could find material on Brandon Burlsworth? I feel like we don't represent him enough as the greatest walk-on. Absolutely love this idea brother. Keep up the good work!
He didn’t have top talent but he did have a lot of talent in a great line, Alex Collins running the ball, and we had receiver weapons in Morgan, Henry, and Keon Hatcher. Was just a great team and we managed a great bowl win
@@SampleDeezeNutz we definitely could have gone further than we did, and you’re right BA was one of the best hog QBs and the still the best since Wilson and Mallet
They talk about #TimTebow or #JohnnyManziel WELL TO RAZORBACK 🐗 FANS HE WAS OUR GUY, ALWAYS A THRILL TOO WATCH, 6'6 240 4.3 SPEED, HE WAS A BIG PLAY WAITING TOO HAPPEN! #9 #MattJones THAT DUDE!!!
the thing that made jones so dangerous wasn't his passing, it wasn't his running, it was the fact that he always stayed calm enough to know when to do what. Unlike someone like Ryan Mallett that started getting in his own head and making mistakes, jones was always just calmly playing chess. It was probably the drugs... but hey.
