Josh, this takes me back to when I built an Archer Radio Shack AM radio. It was solderless and used Springs for terminations. I was in the 6 grade and had no adult help. I know you were making a video, but do you do projects with your kids? My mom n ever participated in any of my projects. Kids in the 70's were just told to go outside and play. Different times.

This looked like a good teaching project. If you haven’t seen it, go to Randy’s channel, K7AGE, and watch his video of assembling his KX3 with crescent wrenches and power screw drivers. It’s hilarious.

Every time you wrap a wire anti-clockwise before tightening the screw, a new gremlin is born and crawls into one of your radios. Other than that a neat little bit of kit!

Wouldn't it be easier to have the leg of the component always on the 9 o'clock side of the screw (looking from the component to the screw), so when you're tightening the screw the force of the motion pulls it into the center instead of pushing it out?

Children can solder if we explain how to do it correctly and safely. I think it's a mistake not to teach them. Later they will know how to use tools and repair objects. it's part of the pedagogy. But it's a nice kit. It may be a bit more complicated than a solderable kit. Indeed nothing is easier to put component legs in holes and then solder them, than to fight with screws as we can see with R2 and C1.

I suppose you could use a decoding application to listen to the sounds and check your codes to see how you are doing?

I would solder the leads after testing the thing, clipping the leads, and removing each screw, one-at-a-time. Than a heavy coating of lacquer or epoxy?
