Back in the day when I was in school in my electronics class we had to use heat sink clips on components while soldering to dissipate heat, I still do this to this day on delicate components when possible!

Your video makes this kit look more impressive than their website does. Looks like a good kit for a club build day... hard stuff done, but still enough to kill an hour or two with. I love that the parts are sorted for beginners.

I did the QRP Labs QCX kit, and I think I like it a lot more. There is a lot more soldering, but it has a much better display and the RC isn't restricted at all. But that's my $0.02.
@Steve-GM0HUU
@Steve-GM0HUU 4 года назад
Having built/used a couple of QRP LABS QCX kits, I was tending to think the QCX is " more bang per buck". That said, the QCX comes without a case or you have to buy it separate which I think roughly doubles the cost (though still less than this kit).
@HamRadioCrashCourse

Steve GM0HUU QCX’s enclosures are great and makes them wonderfull both to built, to operate and visually as gear. First I’ve built a 40m QCX then i bought 2 more for 20 and 80m bands. They are just great :)
@patring620
@patring620 4 года назад
@@Steve-GM0HUU At $100 cheaper, with built-in diagnostics and the entire band, you can buy a pre-fab case for the QRP Labs QCX ($10 from China) and still have money left over for a nice key from American Morse, and maybe some antenna-making wire or something. I know it's not all about price, but the reviewed radio just seems way over priced.

The WA3RNC kits are absolutely amazing and very high quality. I worked 40M CW a ton when I had my Tech license with it. Now with my General I use it as a QRP CW field transmitter. Well worth the money.

The last radio kit I built was on a metal chassis, to give you some idea of how long ago that was, the radio had about 8 tubes in it, no solid state devices at all, they weren't common back then!

That flux pen is good for just the normal soldering as well, not just desoldering. Yes, most modern solder for electronics has a flux core, but once I started hitting all the pads with a flux pen before soldering in the components, everything started happening much faster and ending much cleaner. Consider using some tape to hold components in place as you flip the board over. I've also made a habit of tacking all the components by one lead first, and then reheating and repositioning each component, especially when you are installing an LED or a socket or any other component where alignment is critical for mating with someone else, or just because you want the components to look good. Straightening the remaining leads before soldering also helps eliminate potential solder bridges created by leads being bent over. Finally, good recommendation on the soldering iron. Spending less than $100 on a temperature controlled iron is a false savings.
@Tobascodagama
@Tobascodagama 4 года назад
So true about flux. Saves a lot of headache by directing solder where you want it to go. Also, I tend to prefer desoldering braid over the sucker guns, but that one's more of a matter of opinion I think.
@terencehorka731

kappon tape works great on holding the components while you solder them.

Clipped leads. saved for when I find a CB or other rig that had a power inversion. They can bridge burnt lands after replacing the protection diode . Recent was to the rubbish bin at the truck stop. That rendered a CB with wx, blue tooth, and fm. Rare bird. Tks Fer good tip Fer cw kit. Kv4li

I think i may pick one up. Back in the 60's when i was just a lad. I built a couple kits Heathkit pre- amp and a KNIGHT kit FM Monitor Receiver. In those days you got every invidual component seperate. Each resistor, every capacitor, every pot and tube socket had to be soldered in place. This looks a whole lot easier. Timinv gor this video couldn't be better as im lookinv for a CW transmitter.

The aoyue like 35$ soldering iron is really great I've used one for years. Also these ksg8 ones I've seen on Amazon they run a pid controller stm32 open source..t-15/t-12 cartridge tips, like 70 80$ love that thing, heats up fast, accurate. I've got an old Bakelite base little Morse code key from like the 40s. Really cool little thing i thought I'd never use. This could be a great project!

An interesting kit. It looks nice and 5 Watts is plenty. It means you don't carry a large heavy battery if out portable and can run it for quite a while. I think if you've never soldered anything before I'd say practice on something else before this kit because you don't want the copper track lifting.or overheating things or blobby soldering.
