When I was 26, I was harassed by my employer. I knew I would have freezed if he had gone farther than he did and felt I couldn't keep on living while feeling so vulnerable. I didn't have a drop of violence in me, and I knew I had to change that, so I started taking Krav Maga lessons. It changed my life. Krav Maga focuses on real life situations. Among other things, I practiced situations of sexual assault. With Practice I learned how to be able to react in violence when needed. It gave me confidence and freedom. I believe all women need to learn self defense, the more you feel Krav Maga is not for you because it's just too violent, or too real, the more you need it.

totally agree. i don't do krav maga, but i do weight lifting and boxing. you don't have to be black belt for combat training to be useful. just getting past the aversion to hitting someone or hurting someone is a huge step for many women and that might be all you need in order to defend yourself.

I grew up in predominately poor, black communities in the South. It was a common occurrence that if you were a male and you came home to your parents crying and telling them that you got bullied, they would make you go back out and fight the kid that bullied you and you couldn't come back home until you did. I saw it many times and it was even my experience and my parent's experience. My parents actually drove me back to the park where i got bullied and made me fight the kids. I can tell you that those kids never bullied me again after that.

This is really interesting. Gives me a new perspective on my own experience. i endured relentless sexual harassment from the boys in junior high. What this made me think about was the fact that it didn't start until we got a new kid in my school and he was basically the rotten apple that spoiled the whole bunch. the boys didn't act like that before he came to our school, maybe because they all had dads in the picture. but this kid's dad wasn't in the picture and we didn't have any male teachers in our school. That experience still haunts me 23 years later, but I think having this perspective helps. it was just a confluence of a lot of factors, including my own lack of self esteem from a verbally abusive home life that made me an easy target.

Ugh. I'm sorry to hear this. I think it takes time to learn how to be assertive and set boundaries... I think a lot of girls are socialized to be polite, and in fact that their boundaries are 'mean', so between unlearning that and feeling confident in challenging people who bully or harass, I think it's definitely a learning process.... I do wish I'd gotten involved in something like martial arts as a kids... It would have provided a lot of confidence and structure I really could have used as a young woman...

@@meghanemilymurphy yeah my coping mechanism over the years has bacially been social isolation bc the thought of enduring any kind of public humiliation like that again fills me with terror. I would love to be more like you and the other women speaking their minds on these issues so I'm working on that. But I honestly don't know how you all handle the defamation of your character day in and day out. I can totally understand why Amy cooper fled the country, I would have too if that happened to me.

@@meghanemilymurphy I was just thinking about this again and your comment gave me a new perspective. I've always struggled with boundaries bc telling someone "no" in my mind was a sure way for them to reject me and since I didn't have any self esteem I needed to get it externally. Our skin is the boundary between us and the rest of the world so to have thick skin metaphorically is to have good boundaries literally. I've been working on my self esteem over the pat 15 years so and now I want to start working on having good boundaries bc they really do go hand in hand. It still scares me but I'm tired of being imprisoned by my fear so I am going to face it. Idk how yet, but I know that's what I feel called to do.

@@megankwisdom I had to learn about boundaries when I was in my 20s because I had no clue what they were! It look a while for me to really get my head around it... It's something your parents should teach you, I presume, but I grew up in a home where I wasn't allowed to have boundaries and where they were treated as some kind of personal attack so I had to do all that learning myself... The thick skin has grown through doing my work, though I figure I must have been sort of cut out of it in a way?

"The more you rationalize away what your gut is telling you, the more concerned you should be..." This right here. How much BS I could have avoided by listening to my intuition instead of waiting for "cold hard proof."

@27:48 Some MMA fighters genuinely do seem like nice or respectful men, and there are some I’d be surprised if they’d harm a woman. But like boxers, they take a lot of head trauma, and that can change personality through brain inflammation as they age, to the point that they can go into rages. And they have years and years of training their muscles to react or cause violence. It’s sad, really. Because these men almost always come from nothing, from a hard life, and this is one of the only professions in which they can excel.

I wonder what advice Matt would give to a woman challenging a TiM who has entered the women's toilet, locker room, etc. I don't care if the rules or law allows it.
