According to author, MMA coach, and one of the first people in the United States to receive a black belt in jiu-jitsu, Matt Thornton, violence is as natural to human evolution as sex and food. In his book, “The Gift of Violence: Surviving and Thriving in a Dangerous World,” Matt provides the tools and mindset necessary to avoid-and if necessary, engage in-violent encounters.
Matt has been Peter Boghossian’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach for over a decade, and they are also close friends. In this intimate conversation, they discuss the practical value of jiu-jitsu and MMA training. Matt outlines specific moves to gain control in a fight and the importance of situational awareness and weapon training.
According to Matt, many people have a glamorized view of violence and do not understand the limits of their own capabilities. Worse still, ideology has blunted people’s connection to defensive evolutionary instincts, resulting in dangerous encounters that could be avoided.
Matt Thornton has taught functional martial arts for more than 30 years. He holds a 5th-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is the founder of Straight Blast Gym International, training champion MMA fighters and world-class law enforcement instructors. Matt addresses policing, gang violence, and crime data in his series “Wokeness, Public Safety, BLM, & Antifa.”

There is some legitimate parallel thinking going on here, as I recently talked with a training partner about the way trust is accelerated on the mat, thereby forging bonds much quicker than other hobbies or activities. I could listen to the two of you talk about this subject for hours. Lastly, "Gift of Violence" is a great resource for the culturally inclined (?) martial artist. Solid read.

I’ve just listened to the introduction and heard what you’ve said about PC overriding instinct and I recalled an instance of this travelling. I was backpacking through South Africa and an American lady was telling me she had done this scenic walk along abandoned railroad tracks along the sea. She saw three coloured people approaching her from a distance and she told me that she told herself I mustn’t judge a book by its cover, because that would be racist. They ended up taking everything from her, and threatened to cut her finger off because the ring wasn’t coming off. She’s lucky she wasn’t raped. Being emphatic to other peoples struggles mustn’t come at the expense of situational awareness. There was a township close by and unfortunately in South Africa there is a high level of crime and violence that quite obviously affects the lower socio economic groups who happen to mostly be black and coloured. It isn’t racist to be aware of this.

It's so weird. I bet if she'd seen three random white men approaching her, she would've let her protective instincts inform her behavior. People are being taught to smother their instincts.

Story one : Elderly white woman entering her apartment building is approached by an African American man who she has never seen before, the man said he'd "lost his key" and asked to be let in, following the building policy the woman refuses. The woman is smeared on SM and MSM as a "racist Karen" the woman loses her job and life destroyed. Story Two: A young White woman (more than likely aware of Story one) is approached by an ominous looking black man with neck tattoos as she enters her apartment building, this man had also "lost his key" so this young lady ignores building policy and let's the man in, proceeds to get in an elevator with him, three days later her dead body is found on the roof of the building. It is a crime that the media and current culture are training women (even harshly penalising them) to ignore gut feelings when it comes to their personal safety. Telling them it's more important to be politically correct than to be safe.

What’s worse is that these ideas of repressing our “animal” instincts are propagated by social scientists who should know more than ANYONE what happens when a single person is forced to repressed their instincts/emotions etc- yet believe it’s the best thing for society to do collectively. I’m quite sure one day we will all reap what has been sown and it will be absolutely devastating. The more society tries to supersede the natural instincts as though we are not living animals the more animalistic the society becomes.

I never even thought about many (most?) people not having experienced physical violence, as Peter suggested. Having a two years older brother with anger issues who is much bigger than me taught me at a very early age what it is to have someone on top of you punching you in the head. In my teens, a bit confused and roaming the streets, I learned it again. And still this conversation makes me feel I am not prepared enough. Does anyone perhaps know someone in Milan, Italy teaching more or less what Matt teaches? In most European countries one isn't allowed to be in public with things that are designed as weapons, leaving us very vulnerable. What I think could be very useful is a course in how to use regular objects found everywhere as defensive weapons.
@sibanought
@sibanought 8 месяцев назад
For real life defence in a serious situation, BJJ is pretty much the last thing you want to learn - in fact, it's virtually training to put yourself in a vulnerable position. Non-sport systems that focus on staying on your feet and not getting tied up grappling, and on multiple attackers and weapons. Like Filipino kali and okinawan (non-sport) karate. Muay thai and boxing are also good. Hit and run.

I'm in my 50s, and have bad knees, ankles, and heels. I can't run or jump, because I will re-injure my joints and not be able to walk without pain for months. Given this, can I learn BJJ? I assume not... I carry pepper spray, a knife (which I did train with when I was young), and a gun (which I still train with). I'm not a soft target, and assume most criminals won't be trained martial artists, so I'll probably be OK. But I sometimes wonder about that.

Start at where your baseline is, small daily dose of movement, small initial gradients of increase and you can improve. Imagine jumping off a team of paper 3x 7 times and everyday you add a piece of paper (0.5-1mm). In 3-6 years you'll be a better beast (Mark, physio, aged 50, been promoting this for 2.5 decades, stop this aging = acquiescence story)

I don't know whether this would help you but it helped a friend who had bad joints -- are you getting plenty of quality protein in your diet? Sometimes a high-grain diet low in good protein can make bad joints even worse. My friend upped his protein intake, and began careful but daily low-impact exercises, and now he can move much more freely and quickly.

34:50 Oh man....I'm just waiting for the inevitable flood of Aikidoka to swoop in and start defending Aikido. Look as an Aikido practitioner of 12+ years I can say with utter confidence that Matt is 100% correct. And I offer this not as someone who trained at some obscure strip mall gym headed up by some first dan who got his certificate in his friends garage. I studied under two well known and prominent uchi deshi to the founder of Aikido and have visited dozens of Aikido schools in Canada, the US, and Europe and attended almost as many seminars hosting some of the largest names in Aikido. I love the art. I love what I get out of it. But Matt is 100% correct....it's not combat experience....it's pure choreography....it's gymnastics routines in gi and hakama and I'm under no illusions about how ineffective Aikido techniques, as they are practiced day to day in Aikido dojos....would be in a genuinely violent situation.

28:20 - In 2022, there were 1,630 homicides via bladed weapon in the USA of a total 21,156 homicides. There 696 TOTAL homicides in the UK, by any method - 282 via knife. It would therefore appear that the US view of UK knife crimes is somewhat skewed. Murder by knife is worse in the US, than in the UK.

What is a fantasy based martial art?
@sibanought
@sibanought 8 месяцев назад
Pretty much any traditional or sport "martial art" that claims to be effective (on it's own) for self defence/real life fighting. If you want to be able to protect yourself, focus on the psychological, tactical, and awareness aspects as much as the physical, develop physical fitness, stamina, and strength, and most of all; psychological conditioning - which you can only really get through repeatedly experiencing actual real violence and getting used to it. Otherwise, Muay Thai or/and Boxing will condition you mentally and physically. And combat focused Filipino MA's (eg; pekiti tirsia kali) are good, because they primarily focus on weapons (particularly knives).

9:00 It's interesting to me how this man who thinks of himself as a truthseeker can be so lacking in self awareness. If he was actually interested in things that were true, he would never say that people are atheists because they're interested in what is true. Doing so is an exercise in lazy thinking and arrogance. Someone who was legitimately interested in pursuing truth would maintain more epistemic humility than to be so categorically dismissive of metaphysical questions like the existence of God.
